Oh, they're real. And Ember is soon going to get the surprise of a life time. Everything she has ever thought was real is an illusion. All the things she claimed didn't exist. Well, they do. And the man she has known all her life from a dream, he will save her life.

9. A Short Convo with my Mom, the Human Lie Detector

"Where were you, Em?" Mom asked when I got home.

"Nowhere," I replied quietly, sick of questions like this.

"And where is this 'Nowhere?' "

"Somewhere on this planet. What's with everyone? Why are y'all asking all these questions?"

"I just want to know where you were, honey. Were you with a guy?"

"You could say that," I said, just like when Vicky questioned me.

"Oh! Really! Do we need to have the 'talk' again?"

"Ew, no! Just - Ugh! We are just friends! I wouldn't even think about it. No. Besides, Mom, there's an age gap."

     "Age gap, how much?"

"I'm seven years older. Just tutoring a kid. Service Project for school," I lied, which I knew was not a good idea. My mom had been labeled as the "Human Lie Detector" by all of my friends. Well, ex-friends. Anyway, she could tell any lie you ever told, even if it was written. Amazing that it never worked when Vicky left for a night out "studying," but I got grounded when I texted her "I finished my homework yesterday."

Sure enough, Mom began yelling at me. "Do you not trust me enough to tell the truth?"

"Fine, if you want the truth, I was with an alien from a planet you've never even heard of, trying to save the world, possibly even the universe, from my evil half-life sister and her boyfriend, a criminal from another planet, and I have until next Friday to discover whether he is a Kaeye or a Raguson. Will you leave me alone, now?"

Before she could answer, I stormed off to my bedroom, locked the door, sat on my bed, and stuck my Jake (Adventure Time) earbuds into my ears. I just heard Mom banging on the door, begging me to let her in, when I pumped "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" by Green Day up full blast.
