Change My Mind

I don’t know if I’ll ever love someone as great as Harry so that’s why I never want to forget this feeling. That’s why I’m scared of moving on. I don’t want to forget what it feels like to be in love with Harry Styles, especially the feeling I got when Harry Styles used to love me back.

119. Meeting the Parents

Lily's POV

"Is my hair okay?"

I check my hair once again, using the visor mirror as I try to flatten any stray hairs that I see.

"For the third time, yes," Harry answers. He had just called him mum telling her that we would be there in five minutes, so now, I'm frantically making sure that I look presentable.

I take out my makeup bag and reapply my lipstick. Harry hits a small bump in the road, making me put lipstick on my chin.

"Harry!" I groan. I quickly wipe it off, thankful that it didn't stain.

"Sorry," he mumbles. I can tell that my tone slightly hurt him.

I sigh, knowing that I was wrong. I know I shouldn't be blaming him. My nerves are just getting the best of me and I'm taking it out on him.

"I'm sorry. I'm just...I'm nervous."

I lean back against the seat just as Harry reaches over and takes my hand in his, bringing it up to his lips and placing a soft kiss on my knuckles.

"Don't be. They're easy to get along with and you're one of the most charming people I've ever met. There's no need to be nervous. I know you're going to hit it off with my mum and Robin. And Gemma, as well. I'm sure you'll bond with her when you two gang up on me again and make fun of me."

I laugh, turning to face him before I lean over and give him a kiss on his cheek, prompting a smile to erupt from his lips.

"They adored you when we were just friends," Harry says. "They're going to love you now that we're together and the fact that you make me insanely happy."

Of course, my nerves are calmed, all because of him. I squeal as I lurch forward and wrap my arms around his neck, pulling him into a hug.

Harry chuckles and he places a kiss on the top of my head just before I pull away. I keep my arms loose around his neck, giving him enough space to drive properly.

"You know, this means you're going to have to meet my parents soon, as well."

"I would love to. I'm sure they're just as lovely as you are."

I grin. "Well, I know you're going to get along with my mum but my dad, he's gonna be a tough one."

His eyebrows rise slightly, glancing at me for a quick second before looking back at the road.

"Really? What do you mean?"

"Well, when I first started dating Marcus, he wouldn't even let me stay out past 10. And he would always wait for me at the door when Marcus would drop me off. He wouldn't even let him inside the house. And Marcus told me that my dad once threatened him saying that if he ever hurt me, he'd regret it. He told him that while he was cleaning his gun."

Harry's eyes widen, his face paling as he stops at a stoplight.

"Are...are you serious?"

Unable to hold it in any longer, I burst out laughing, covering my mouth with my hand. My eyes start to water from the laughter and when I look over at Harry and see him scowling at me, I just laugh even harder.

"I'm joking," I say in between laughs. "My dad obviously doesn't own a gun. My mum would kill him. Don't worry, my dad is the most laid back person you will ever meet. My mum is more strict that he is."

Harry glares at me and I shriek when he reaches out and wraps his arm around me in a headlock, trapping my head against his chest and tickling my neck. I burst out laughing again, this time against my will.

Fortunately, the light turns green, making him stop to focus on driving. I catch my breath as I shove him away, watching the smile on his face grow. He takes my hand once again as he turns onto another street.

"We're here."

I glance at the direction he's looking at and I see a somewhat familiar house. Harry's shown me pictures of him with his mum and stepdad, including ones in front of the house that he had bought them two years ago.

He turns onto the driveway, parking the car and turning it off. Just as I unbuckle my seatbelt, I see the front door of the house open and Harry's mum stepping out with a beaming smile on her face. Robin appears behind her, resting his hand on her shoulder, giving us a friendly smile.

I step out of the car at the same time that Harry does and he walks to me, holding his hand out for me to take before he guides me towards his parents.

I can feel the nervousness start to creep back in my body, especially when Harry has to let my hand go to hug his mum.

"I missed you so much, Harry," she mumbles against his shoulder. I stand quietly behind Harry, fiddling with my fingers as they continue to hug. The last time they saw each other was at her birthday party so I know they've missed each other a lot.

"I missed you, too, mum."

They hug for a few more seconds before finally pulling away. He hugs Robin before he steps back beside me, resting his arm around my waist.

"You guys remember Lily."

"Of course I do," she says, stepping forward with outstretched arms and a warm smile. I don't hesitate to return the hug, feeling her tighten her arms around me. "It's nice to see you again, dear."

"It's nice to see you, too, Mrs. Twist. Thank you for inviting me for lunch."

"I told you to call me Anne. Now, come inside. It's quite chilly out."

Harry takes my hand, leading the way as he follows them inside the house.

"Gemma just called and said she'll be here in 15 minutes so just make yourself comfortable in the living room while I finish up lunch."

Robin sits down on one of the couches and Harry starts to tug me towards the other one but I stop him and look towards Anne.

"Um, did you need any help?"

I might as well get over my nervousness now. It'll make the actual lunch less nerve-wracking if I get to know her a bit more beforehand.

She smiles at me and nods. "Of course. I could always use an extra hand. It's not like those two are eager to help me out."

I give a light laugh as I look up at Harry and see him playfully rolling his eyes. Anne heads to the kitchen and I'm about to follow her when Harry tugs on my hand.

I turn to him, standing in front of him as he looks down at me with a smile.

"Are you going to be okay?"

I nod. "Yeah. I just thought I'd get to know her a bit."

"You're amazing, you know that?" he says, looking at me with adoration.

I bat my eyelashes and flick my hair over my shoulder. "I know."

He rolls his eyes. "I have no doubt she's going to really like you. Just don't offer to take over the cooking. It wouldn't really make a good first impression if you burnt all the food."

I glare at him, smacking his chest as he grins at me.

"Can I go now? I did offer to help your mum, not stand here and listen to you make fun of me."

He chuckles. "I'm sorry. And yes, you can go. I'll just be out here if you need me."

I smile and lean my head up, puckering my lips as I wait for a kiss. His smile widens, not wasting a second before giving me a sweet kiss. With Robin right behind us, and Anne in the other room, we knew that we had to keep it PG.

Our gazes linger for a moment longer as we pull away, before I turn around and head towards the kitchen. I turn the corner and see Anne hovering over the stove, mixing something in a pot.

"What can I help with?" I say, standing a bit to the side. Anne turns her head, looking over at me.

"Can you help set the table? We'll be using these plates over here."

She nods towards the stack of plates beside her and I go to stand in front of it.

"Of course." I take the stack in my hands, making sure to be extra careful with them as I turn around and head to the dining room table beside the kitchen. I place them neatly around the table before going back to the kitchen and taking the utensils that Anne showed me, placing them in their proper place beside the plates.

I head back to the kitchen just as Anne's transferring the food from the pot into a plating dish.

"Would you be able to put the mashed potatoes into that bowl, dear?"

"Sure." I stand beside her and start scooping the potatoes into the bowl in front of me.

"So, how are you and Harry doing?"

I pause for a quick second, her sudden question catching me off guard. I continue plating the dish as I clear my throat.

"We're good. We're doing really well."

I don't really know if I should elaborate more but I decide to just keep it simple for now.

"How long have you two been together? I mean, since...since..."

I know she's referring to since Harry broke up with Ivana. And I know that he still hasn't told her the truth about his "relationship" with Ivana. I completely understood, knowing that it would be hard for him knowing that she would be disappointed. I know he'll tell her when the time is right.

"Almost two months now," I answer, deciding to help her from how clearly uncomfortable she was.

"That's great," she says, seeing her smile as I look over at her. I return it with one of my own. "Anyways, I just wanted to say--"

She's interrupted by the doorbell ringing.

"That must be Gemma. We can continue this later."

I grow anxious as to what she was going to say but I manage a smile as I nod.

"Of course," I simply say.

We take the food and place them on the dining room table just as Gemma, Robin and Harry walk in.

"Gemma!" Anne says, wiping her hands on her apron as she walks up to her daughter and brings her in for a hug.

"Hi, mum. How are you?"

"I'm good. I'm good. How are you?" she asks, pulling away.

"I'm great. The food looks delicious." Gemma then turns to me, her smile widening. "Hey, Lily."

She steps forward to give me a hug, one that I return.

"Hey, Gemma. Nice to see you again."

"You, too," she says as we pull away.

"Now, everyone, have a seat," Anne says.

I sit down beside Harry, with Anne and Robin sitting on opposite ends of the table and Gemma in front of me.

We pass around the food and once everyone has enough food on their plate, everyone starts eating.

"So, Gem, how's work?" Anne asks.

"It's good. I actually got promoted to editor."

"That's wonderful! Congratulations!"

We all congratulate her, causing her to blush with slight embarrassment as she thanks us.

"How about you, Harry? How's tour?" Anne asks.

"It's been great. We just finished the South American leg so we're here for the European part."

"That's great. That means we're going to see a lot more of you now, right?"

I smile over at Harry as he smiles at his mum.

"Of course."

I was anticipating him to bring up Christmas, as well as inviting me to their family celebration but he just turns back to his food without another word. Maybe he's going to wait until after we finish eating.

"Are you in school, Lily?" Robin asks.

I look at him and smile. "Yes, I'm majoring in Arts and minoring in English."

"That's great. And what do you plan on doing after you graduate?"

I glance at Harry, seeing him give me a reassuring smile, knowing exactly what's going through my head.

"I'm actually working to make it into the music business. My friend, Ed, is helping me out but I want to wait until I finish school and get my diploma before I pursue that."

"That's very admirable," Anne says. "Not a lot of people would finish school, especially if they had the opportunity to go into the music business."

I smile. "Thank you. I want to make sure that I have something to go back to if it doesn't work out. Maybe do something behind the scenes or write for other people. I love music so anything that has anything to do with it, I'll be happy with it."

"Well, with your humble attitude you have now, I can tell that you're going to be a true artist and you're not going to be one of those that let the fame get to their head. You need to have the passion for music to be successful."

My smile widens, her words truly making me happy. "Thank you, Anne. I really appreciate that. Plus, I have your wonderful son as the perfect person to keep me grounded."

I reach under the table to grab Harry's hand, feeling him give a gentle squeeze as I look over at him and share a smile.

"Just don't follow too much in his footsteps and fall on stage a hundred times," Gemma adds.

The entire table erupts in laughter, except for Harry, of course.

"Here we go," Harry says, playfully glaring at his sister.

They start bickering like normal siblings do before Anne intervenes.

"Stop it or I'll make you two wash the dishes just like when you were kids."

That instantly shuts them up but they knew it was all jokes around the table, as they had smiles on their faces.

"Well, Lily, no matter when you decide to pursue that, let us know and we'll be the first in line to buy your music," Anne says.

I laugh. "Of course. I'll send you the first copies myself."

By now, I feel completely comfortable around his family. Harry was right. They're easy to get along with. And they seem to like me.

I look over at Harry as everyone start to eat dessert. He smiles at me and I can see his eyes darting down to my lips for a split second. I know he's dying for a kiss just like I am. Instead, he leans towards me to place a kiss on my temple.

That itself is enough to make my smile widen from ear to ear. I squeeze his hand and let our gaze linger for a few more seconds before we start eating our dessert. I glance over at Anne and see her already looking at me with a warm smile on her face before she looks away.

We keep light conversation around the table until we finish and all stand up from the table.

"Robin, why don't you show Harry and Gem the bench you're building?" Anne asks. "Lily, would you be able to help me clear the table?"

I sense the fact that she wants to speak to me alone, most likely in regards to the conversation we were having before Gemma arrived, I nod and offer her a smile.

"Of course," I reply.

I can see that Harry senses it, too, because he looks between Anne and I curiously before he follows Robin and Gemma to the patio doors.

Once they're outside, Anne and I start bringing the dishes to the kitchen. When the table is clear, Anne starts on the dishes as I start wiping down the counters.

"So, Lily. There was something I wanted to tell you."

I decide to stop and turn towards her, looking at her as she continues washing the dishes.

"I just wanted to say that I'm so happy you and Harry are finally together. I love seeing my baby so happy."

Those two sentences were already enough to make my heart leap in my chest. First, she said "finally", like she wanted us to be together since she last saw us. And then, she said how much she loves seeing Harry happy. We've only had one lunch together so, of course it surprises me that she sees that.

"He makes me happy, too. I love him more than anything."

I watch her carefully, seeing her eyes start to glisten slightly, even as she keeps her eyes on the dishes.

"You know, when I first met you at my birthday party, and even though I knew that you two had broken up, I could tell that there was still something between you two. Not sound like a creepy mum, but I was watching you two dancing that night. Before Ivana had arrived. I could see that you two still had feelings for each other. And now, watching you two interact at the dinner table and even when I was watching you two after you offered to help in the kitchen, I can see that those feelings have only gotten stronger. You couldn't see him but from where I was sitting, Harry barely took his eyes off of you. And when you would look back at him, I was in awe watching his entire face light up. I've never seen that before, on anyone."

Her eyes start to water a bit more, just like mine are starting to, as well.

"When Harry first started talking to me about you over the phone, when you two had first met, I was so happy that he seemed to find someone who would care about him the way he deserves. You're not there for his money, his looks or his fame. And from what you said at the table, about wanting to finish your education before you go into the music business, I was definitely reassured that you aren't just using my son. I knew from the beginning that you were there for the boy that I watched grow up into a wonderful man that I know deserves the world. And you're exactly what he deserves. Like I said, I've never seen him so happy. So, I wanted to thank you for being there for him. I know you'll take great care of my baby. I'm rooting for you, okay?"

She finally looks up at me, tears welling up in her eyes but a smile present on her face.

My eyes are prickling with tears but I return her smile.

"I can't imagine Harry not being by my side. And don't worry, I'll always be there for him. You said a wonderful man, Anne. There are not a lot of people like him in this world. And I'm lucky and blessed to have him in my life."

She rinses her hands and wipes them on a dishtowel before she walks up to me and pulls me in for a tight hug. I instantly return the hug, feeling her only tighten her arms around me.

"I honestly can't thank you enough," she says. "You make my son happy and that's all I could ask for."

We pull away and we both wipe the tears from our faces.

"There's really no need to thank me. He makes me happy, too, and that's all I could ask for in return."

She shakes her head in amazement and disbelief. "Harry was lucky to find you. Truly."

We say nothing more. She gives me one last smile before she goes back to washing the dishes. She opens her mouth to say something but the patio doors open and Harry, Gemma and Robin walk in.

Gemma and Robin go to the living room and Harry walks up to me and wraps his arms around my shoulders from behind, resting his chin on the top of my head.

"What are you two lovely ladies gossiping about over here?"

Anne and I exchange a look, knowing that we wanted to keep the conversation to ourselves.

"We were just talking about school and Manchester," I say. "I told her that her and Robin should visit sometime, with you of course."

I give her another look, silently telling her to go along.

"Yes, we were discussing when Robin and I are free. Maybe around Christmastime."

My stomach does at little flip at the mention of Christmas.

"Oh right, before I forget," Harry says. "I was wondering if Lily could join us for Christmas this year."

I tense slightly, waiting for Anne's reaction.

"She already talked to her parents and they're going to her aunt's place in Edinburgh so I asked Lily if she would just want to spend it here with us."

Anne looks up at Harry in confusion. "I thought we already talked about this."

I can feel Harry tense behind me.

"No, we didn't," Harry says in a rush.

My eyebrows furrow in confusion at the conversation between the two of them.

"Yes, we did. I remember you asking me like a month ago and--"

"Mum! You weren't supposed to tell her that!"

"Oh! I'm so sorry. I forgot," she says, her eyes wide in shock.

I turn my head to look up at Harry and see his cheeks pink in embarrassment. Not knowing what it is exactly he's embarrassed about, I decide to calm him down.

"It's okay, Harry," I whisper, trying to reassure him as he looks down at me.

"You're more than welcome to spend Christmas with us, dear. Gemma is having her friend over, too, so it's not a problem at all. We'd be delighted to have you."

“Thank you, Anne. I’m looking forward to it.”

We exchange a smile as I bring my hands up to soothingly run along Harry’s arms.

“Did you want to come see my room?” Harry asks.

Even with Harry’s insistence, Anne thought it was the least she could do to set one of the room’s as Harry’s. Gemma has her own as well for when she comes to visit.

“I would love to.”

Harry unwraps his arms from me before taking my hand and leading me out of the kitchen.

“Leave the door open!” Anne shouts at us.

I laugh as Harry rolls his eyes, following him as he leads us up the stairs, down the hallway and into one of the rooms.

Harry being his cheeky self, he leaves the door open but just a couple of inches.

“Harry!” I whisper-shout.

“What?” he says innocently. “It’s technically not closed.”

I roll my eyes, crossing my arms before I start walking around the room. I look at the pictures placed around on tables and some that are hung on the walls. I run my fingers along the spines of the books lined up on the small bookshelf and then I walk backwards to sit down on the edge of his bed.

His room is exactly how I pictured it would be, posters of bands I don’t know taped to the wall, an PlayStation growing dust underneath the flat screen TV, a stereo system and rows and rows of vinyls lined up neatly beside it.

I’m sure if Harry were living here, it would be messy with his clothes thrown everywhere, just like his room in his own house.

“I like it,” I say, resting back with my hands behind me.

He smirks at me as he pushes him off of the wall he was leaning against. He walks towards me, stopping right in front of me before he leans over, supporting himself with his hands on the bed on either sides of my legs with his face just inches from mine.

“Yeah? How about my bed?”

I bite my lip before I make a show of looking down and around his bed. I bounce up and down slightly before I look back up at him.

“It’s alright. But I like the one in your house better.”

His smile widens, leaning even closer.

“I could change your mind about that.”

Knowing what was coming, I lean in at the same time he does, connecting our lips in a long-awaited kiss. I keep my hands behind me, knowing that if they touched Harry for just even a second, I would be pulling him on top of me.

With Harry’s parents and sister just downstairs, I know that this is the not the place to fulfill that. Honestly, it’s the last place I would want someone to catch us.

Therefore, I stay in my spot but can’t resist turning my head to deepen the kiss. Harry moves forward, making his head move up, forcing my head to crane back until he’s practically kissing down on me.

I can tell that he’s aware of my hesitance to take this kiss to the level. With his sneaky move with leaving the door open, even with his mum’s instructions to leave it wide open, I’m not even surprised when he applies pressure to the kiss, pushing me to try to get me to lie down.

Just as I’m about to fall, one of my hands reflexively reaches up to grab the back of his neck to support myself. However, with only my one hand now to support my body, I fall back on the bed, Harry’s body crashing on top of mine.

Even with my subconscious shouting at me to push him off of me with the fear of one of Harry’s parents walking in on us, it’s not enough as one of Harry’s hands starts to roam my body, his other arm being used to support himself with his elbow.

Instinctively, my one knee moves up to lean against his hip, causing Harry to press down harder on me.

He turns his head to deepen the kiss even more, his tongue darting out to lick my bottom lip. His hand sneaks underneath my sweater, his warm hand grazing along my skin. Just as his hand is about to reach my breast, someone knocks on the door.

I’ve never moved faster in my life as I push Harry off of me and sit up straight as the door opens. Gemma appears at the doorway, looking at the both of us as I try to subtly fix my sweater. I know that trying to fix my hair would be a dead giveaway so I just hope and pray that it’s not messy.

A smirk spreads across her face and I know that we were caught.

“You’re lucky I offered to come get you or mum would’ve caught you. I knew you two were up to something.”

I blush furiously. Of course I’m embarrassed but I’m so thankful that it was Gemma and not Anne or Robin.

“You could’ve waited until I answered!” Harry exclaims.

Gemma rolls her eyes, crossing her arms as she leans against the doorframe.

“I gave you plenty enough time after I knocked. Plus, mum was watching me from downstairs so she would’ve definitely realized what was happening if I hadn’t walked in.”

Harry just grumbles as he stands up and fixes his shirt.

“Anyways, I’m leaving soon so come downstairs and say goodbye to your lovely sister.”

I stand up and Harry takes my hand as she follows Gemma out of the room and down the stairs. We walk over to Anne and Robin at the front door and they give us smiles as we reach them.

“See ya, little brother,” Gemma says, hugging Harry.

“It was nice seeing you, Gem. If you’re able to, drop by the party.”

They pull away and Harry stands beside me.

“I’ll try.”

She turns to me and gives me a wink before she hugs me.

“It was nice seeing you, Lily. Keep this one on whatever leash you have on him. He’s much more mature now and I know it’s because of you.”

Everyone except Harry laughs as we pull away. He ruffles his sister’s hair and she shoves him back.

Gemma says her goodbyes to Anne and Robin before she gives us all one last wave and leaves as we stand by the door.

“Lily and I should be heading out, as well. We have to get ready for the party.”

Anne pouts and opens her arms towards Harry and hugs him.

“Come visit us again soon, alright?” she asks.

“I will. I’ll make sure of it. And it’s not like you’re not going to my show on Monday. I’ll see you then.”

“Right, of course. We will definitely be there.”

Anne hugs me next and she gives me a kiss on the cheek and squeezes her arms around me.

“It was nice seeing you, Lily. Don’t hesitate to visit, as well. And good luck with school.”

“Thank you.”

Anne looks over at Harry, seeing him saying his goodbye to Robin before she looks back at me.

“Remember what I said, okay?” she whispers, only loud enough for me to hear. “Take care of my baby. I know he’s in good hands. Keep him happy.”

I smile and nod. “I will. I promise.”

She gives me one last smile before she steps back and stands beside Robin. I give him a hug, as well before Harry takes my hand once again.

“Thank you for having us,” I say.

“It was our pleasure. Thank you for coming. Have fun tonight.”

“Thank you,” I say to both of them as Harry opens the front door. Anne and Robin watch us from the doorframe as Harry and I walk to the car. We hop inside and wave to them as Harry reverses out of the driveway and down the street.

“So, did you have a good time?” he asks.

I take his hand, placing it my lap and absentmindedly play with the rings on his fingers.

“I did. Your family is so nice. You were right. I was worried for nothing.”

He gives me a quick smile before he takes my hand and places a kiss on it, placing it back on my lap afterwards.

“I told you. They love you. I’m already waiting for my mum to call telling me how much she loves you.”

The conversation that Anne and I shared plays through my mind. I know I will never forget them. Hearing those words from Harry’s own mum is amazing enough. It made my heart swell in pride that his mum accepts me and realizes how much we care for each other. That’s all I wanted. I wanted her to know that I love her son more than anything.

I decide to keep that conversation between Anne and I, even though I want to see Harry’s face when I tell him what his mum said about us.

“I love you,” I blurt out.

He glances at me, curiosity present on his features.

“I love you, baby. But why’d you suddenly say that?”

I honestly don’t know, either. Maybe the fact that I was hoping to see his reaction if I had told him what his mum said to me, I guess I just wanted to see him smile for any other reason.

And I got it. I saw the way his eyes lit up just like his mum described.

I shrug. “I just wanted to. Why? Am I not allowed to?” I tease.

He grins at me, shaking his head as I feel him squeeze my hand.

“Of course you are. You’re just being weird. Did my mum say something to you?”

I hold back my smile, even though his eyes are focused on the road.

“Nope. I’m just really happy right now.”

He stops at a red light and smiles over at me. He leans forward and places his lips on mine, giving me a lingering kiss before he pulls away with the same look in his eyes.

If all it took was to say those three little words or a simple kiss, I would tell him that I love him and kiss him all day long.
