1. The drama

“Ariana, it’s already a new school and you’ve already got how many detentions?” yells my mom on the top of her lungs as we walk towards the principal’s office “3...” I say innocently “I’m sorry I didn’t me...” She cuts me off short “I don’t care! You’re doing the same thing like the last two schools I don’t want you getting expelled again” she looks more sad than angry this time. I know I’m hard work sometimes, but I actually don’t mean it, most of the things that get me into these situations aren’t all my doings, plus It’s been hard for me the last 3 year since my dad abandoned us, which is probably why I’m going down the wrong path. Moms amazing, but sometimes a girl just needs her dad.

The door slams behind my raged mother as she enters Mr Barber’s office, we take a seat and then the war begins. “Mrs Grande, are you aware of how many detentions your child has had this week?” “Yes, I am aware” she says not even looking at him “She started last week and already she has had 3 detentions!” he says directing his anger at me with his voice raising, I look out the window and try to concentrate on the calmness of the wind but mom interrupts my trains of thought nudging me in my rib suggesting I should say something in apology. “Ow!” I cry in agony “....Sorry” I say looking out the window again “No Ariana, I’m past that already” He growls in disappointment “It’s only 3” I say getting annoyed, I’m getting in trouble for 3 detentions in 1 week? What kind of school is this? I remember in Summahwah I got a detention everyday and they didn’t even care.

“Don’t talk back to me Miss Grande!” he shouts “I’m sorry, I have no option but to suspend you for 1 week” he spits at me like I’m a child in kindergarten trying to learn the alphabet. “Ok, where do I sign?” my mom says annoyingly. “Ariana go wait outside” she says lazily without even turning my way. I walk towards the front entrance and force the entrance open and wait for the familiar clashing of the doors, well on the bright side I don’t have to go to school for a week and I won’t get bullied. My mom catches up to me and we walk to the car, I look at my mom’s young face she’s only 35 she gave birth to me when she was 17 and dad abandoned us when I was 14 so I can imagine why she doesn’t have any expression on her face when I get into trouble anymore, as long as it’s not police involved it’s totally familiar with her.

“Ariana” she says shaking her head at me “must we go through this again?” she says pitifully “I know already mom, I’m not a kid anymore stop babying me!” I turn around and project at her “Well if you’re not a baby why do you act like one?!” she shouts back, she turns around and grabs my shoulders with her cold hands, I feel the nails dig in, she stares into my soul lowering her voice and temper “I can’t afford for you to go to another school, you know that” she says quietly and calmly “It’s your last year of school please make it a good one” she releases her grasp off of my shoulders and starts walking to the car at a faster pace leaving me standing alone.
