The Bucket List (One Shot)

It had started as an idea, and in time, it had turned into something else.

( This was actually my entry for a contest in another website. One of the goals was to write in 400 words or less that's why it's short... Anyway, I thought, why not share it here? So, there. )

1. The Bucket List

It was getting late but the dance seemed like it had only started. I looked for my best friend and found her dancing with the school’s basketball team captain. Her dark honey hair bounced and the flowers clipped into her curls moved along her every sway.

The girl I was dancing with got fed up by my negligence and left.

The song finally ended and the whole time it felt like torture watching her dance with other guys. I knew it was a bad idea to start that bucket list. Stupid me.

She was about to get back when Mr. Basketball Team Captain stopped her. She was giggling like crazy and then Captain pulled his phone out. He typed something in it and said something to her; she nodded and resumed going back. Honestly, it made my blood boil.

“‘Dance with the team captain’, check.” She grinned widely as she marked the box on the annoying piece of paper. “I’m winning here, Jimmy. You haven’t marked your ‘Dance with a cheerleader’ yet.”

“Mark it for me then,” I replied.

She sat down next to me. “What’s the matter?”

“I don’t think I want to do this anymore.”

“Are you being a sore loser again, James?” she smiled that adorable lopsided smile of hers.

I cursed under my breath.

“I’m not being a sore loser. I’m just… tired.”

“Oh, come on,” she sighed, looking at her list one more time. “I only have one more box to mark, though. It will be a waste if we end this now.”

It was my turn to sigh.

“Fine. I obviously won, anyway.” She said.

The DJ started a slow music. “Come on,” she sings, pulling me up with her, “We haven’t danced yet.”

The two of us held each other and moved across the dance floor. I have always wondered if we could be more.

Then I remembered.

“Take these off,” I said, pulling her glasses off before she protests and placed it in my pocket.

“Why? Then I wouldn’t be able to see you or anything else…” she grabbed onto my arm.

I leaned closer, our foreheads touching. “Can you see me now?” I asked softly, locking my eyes with hers.

“Yes…” she whispers.

“What was the last thing on your list?” I asked, never taking my eyes off her.

She smiles slightly, “Have my first kiss…”

I smiled and leaned down.
