4. Chapter Three

I got back to the flat at quarter to eight and found Emily sat on the sofa facing the door with a great big Cheshire cat grin on her face. "What's going on?" I asked placing my bag on the coat hook and keys into the bowl on the entrance table before sitting down in the chair opposite her.

"Robert Winston was here." she told me, keeping up the grin.

      "What!?"

"Well, it wasn't him. But the guy did work for him." I had trouble getting to grips with the news. Some guy that works for Robert Winston, came to our flat at lunchtime to drop my notebook off, and Emily had reverted to her fourteen year old self. She handed the notebook to me, and told me to look inside the cover. Seriously, she was giddy, and excited; the way we would get when the cutest guy in school talked to us in the playground. The only difference between then and now is that we aren't fourteen. But I suppose her reaction is normal when someone like Lord Robert Winston talks to you. I opened the notebook and a piece of paper with a number written on it fell out into my lap. I picked up with my right hand and saw the name 'Robert Winston' above the number.

"A little arrogant to assume that I want his number isn't it?" I told Emily as I put the paper and the notebook on the coffee table and made my way over to the fridge.

"Robert Winston gives you his phone number and you say he's arrogant?" she said in disbelief.

"I just don't understand why girls throw themselves at his feet that's all." I told her as I poured a glass of orange juice. "I mean if he wants to meet me for coffee, he should ask me in person."

"Would you say yes?" great now I'm going to be bombarded with questions.

"Right now? No, I wouldn't because I found out today that he is going to be a judge at the Summer Performance." I watched Emily's face go from questioning look to guilty. "What did you do?"

"I arranged for you to meet him at the café tomorrow."

"Tomorrow!?" I shouted. "I can't do that. I already agreed to go shopping for the show with Kayley and Dan, besides I get to meet John."

        "Who's John?"

"Dan's new boyfriend." I told her. "I have never seen him this hap- that's besides the point. You arranged date without my knowledge." I put down my glass and made my way to my room.

"What are you going to do?"

"Choose an outfit and I'll have to leave you lot at lunch tomorrow." I walked to my wardrobe. Well, I said I was going to look for an outfit, truth is Emily said the 'date' was at a café, which means that I wouldn't have to dress up properly, just smart casual. That look I could do in my sleep - or at least in the morning - so I took out my laptop and returned to the living area to type up the next chapter of my book.

"I'm coming!" I shouted as someone kept buzzing to get up to the flat. It was five thirty, and I was not happy that whoever it was had woken me up. I saw on the screen that it was Dan and Kayley, so I let them up. I opened the door let them in after going back into my room for my dressing gown. "Do you know what time it is?" I asked them once they were securely in the flat.

"Emily told to come." Kayley answered me and then hid behind Dan when I scowled.

        "Why would she do that?"

"We need to talk about what's going to happen at lunch today." I turned to my left and found Emily putting the kettle on, already dressed. She was wearing a cream coloured strappy, crochet waist dress, with black ankle boots. "Or did you forget about your date with Robert Winston?" Crap. I was hoping it was all just some really bad dream.

"It is not a date, it is merely two people meeting for coffee." I answered back. "That may be considered a date in an American high school movie, but in real world London it isn't." I looked at Dan and Kayley for back up, which was fruitless.

"Beth," Dan started. "You're meeting him for coffee. On your own, that is the definition of a date."

"That's why you lot, and John will be at the same café." I told them. Emily was the one that dragged me into this and there was no way I would go to the café at lunch with out having an escape plan. I decided that I might as well get ready to go out since I was already up.

I sat at my dressing table in my towel for ten minutes after showering. While part of me wanted to go on the "date" with Robert Winston, the other part wanted to stay at home and hide away from the world. Eventually I walked over to my wardrobe and pulled out my strappy tile print dress and white wedges. I knew that Emily and Kayley would complain that it didn't show off my figure, but I was already feeling uncomfortable about meeting the most sought after guy in the United Kingdom and possibly Ireland, without worrying about whether he's examining how I look.

As I walked out into the living room I was dragged over to the dining table and forced to sit down by an ever excitable Kayley, who threw herself into doing my hair whilst Em gave me a light dusting of make up. Then there was Dan whose mind just wasn't in the flat at all. I wish I could go all love struck like that. It might make today a little easier to deal with. But I don't think I will ever be that loved up, I mean I have been in love before. It was in year eleven and he was in the upper sixth, we went out on a few dates but he called it off when he'd finished his A levels, but I was never in love with him, at least not the way Dan is with John. He was just, you know a boyfriend from school. Once my hair and make up were done, I was allowed to go to the kitchen to eat something. I sat at the breakfast bar talking to Dan about -surprise surprise - John, as Emily took a photo of me. Luckily, I wasn't eating at the time.
