26. Coping

     It was only two days really that I knew Alan, and yet I knew for a fact he would want me to wear whatever I wanted... I didn't have to slump into the visitation in all black, hair up, with my ankles hidden like Alan died in the 1800's. I somehow knew he would want my hair fixed, wearing a nice sweater of some sort... I wiped the tears from my eyes, dug through my closet, and at last found a nice blue turtle neck.

     Later, climbing into the car with Niall, he and his parents looked at me, with somewhat of shameful looks etched onto their pale faces. "Alan was a colorful guy," I said, not even looking up from the floorboard. They took it, and turned to face the road again. Niall sported a black button up, jet black pants, and morbid black shoes. With his sparkling eyes and blonde hair, it not only clashed with him, but with Alan.

     Time seemed to go in fast-forward. I remember arriving to the funeral, seeing Alan and recalling that day at the oasis, and leaving in a car with three sobbing Horans. I got back home, climbed under my blanket, and wept.

     Was it my fault? Niall's? Was this supposed to be the story? I thought back- Niall hugging me, Alan running away with me. None of it mattered anymore. Turns out not even the best of people live to see it all. Life wasn't fair. But then again, none of this ever was...
