A Twist in Time: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

You know the story, Voldemort came to kill the one born at the end of July, how Lily and James Potter died for their son, but what if they didn't die? What if they had a plan? What would happen when Lily and James become the same age as their son?

5. The Sorting

"Welcome to Hogwarts," said Professor McGonagall, a tall, black-haired witch in emerald-green robes, "The start-of-term banquet will begin shortly, but before you take your seats in the Great Hall, you will be sorted into your Houses. The Sorting is a very important ceremony because, while you are here, your House will be something like your family within Hogwarts. You will have classes with the rest of your House, sleep in your House dormitory, and spend free time in you House common room.

"The four Houses are called Gryfinndor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Each House has its own noble history and each has produced outstanding wizards and witches. While you are at Hogwarts, your triumphs will earn you House points, while any rule breaking will lose House points. At the end of the year, the House with the most points is awarded the House cup, a great honor. I hope each of you will be a credit to whichever House becomes yours."

"The Sorting Ceremony will take place in a few minutes in front of the rest of the school." Her voice stopped as her eyes caught sight of Lily. Her student, her best student, Lily Potter, a mother who died to protect her child, or so she had thought.

A strained face, she looked towards James as she left. Another student, a troublemaker, but a great person, a father, a dead man.

The students were left alone in the corridor for a few moments before McGonagall returned, careful not to look near the Potters again. They entered the great hall and the chatter stopped as McGonagall placed a stool and hat in front of them.

The hat opened its brim and began to sing. (I'm not going to copy the song down, it's the same as the first book, Lily and James can't change it because I'm going with the theory Ron had that it spends all year making up the song and it didn't know about them until Dumbledore told the teachers.Okay, I probably could of written the song in the amount of time I spent on this, oh well.)

"Oh!" Lily exclaimed, "We just have to try on the hat!"

"Thank Merlin! Fred was going on about having to wrestle a troll." A boy said, sounding relieved. Hermione shot him a skeptical look but said nothing because had McGonagall begun to shout out names:

"When I call your name, you will put on the hat and sit on the stool to be sorted," she said. "Abbott Hannah"

"HUFFLEPUFF!" shouted the hat. Hannah went to sit at a table on the right that was cheering.

More names were called until one of their small group was called up.

"Granger, Hermione!"

"GRYFFINDOR!" shouted the hat and Harry was almost sure he heard a small groan from a bright red-haired boy next to him who he identified as a Weasley.

"Granger, Lily!"

"GRYFFINDOR!" shouted the hat. This time Harry was sure he had heard a groan from the Weasley.

"What is it?" Harry asked the boy. "Know it alls, they should be in Ravenclaw, not Gryffindor, where I have to deal with them." Harry narrowed his eyes, "They just so happen to be my friends and I think they will do great in Gryffindor." he said, feeling protective of his first friends. The Weasley rolled his eyes and said "Whatever," as a boy called Neville became a Gryffindor.

Soon enough it was Harry's turn, "Potter, Harry!" McGonagall called out. Whispers erupted all over the Great Hall and the Weasley boy froze with shock when Harry went up to the stool. After a mental debate with Harry, the hat called out, "GRYFFINDOR!" and Harry got up a went to the table with a smile on his face, receiving the loudest applause yet.

Soon enough James joined Harry, Hermione, and Lily in Gryfinndor. By the end there were 6 new Gryffindor boys, Harry, James, Neville Longbottom, Dean Thomas, Seamus Finnigan, and the Weasley boy, whose first name was Ron. There were also new Gryffindor girls, four of them, Hermione, Lily, Pavarti Patil, and Lavender Brown.

They were brought up to the Gryffindor common room after the feast and went to their dormitories, falling asleep quickly and happily, all but Ron, whose last thought was, "What have I done?"
