9. True North

I woke up the next morning, got dressed, and went to buy some groceries. I know I just bought some not too long ago, but Henry’s been coming over for super, and Regina sometimes does too. Danielle has also been coming over to eat, but she won’t tell me anything when I ask her about her parents. I think I know what’s going on, but I want her to tell me when she’s ready.

I went to the store, and as I was checking out, I noticed that Henry was talking to 2 kids. I paid for my things and went to see Henry, when the store owner said something about them stealing. The owner checked Henry’s bag and pulled out some stolen stuff. I knew that Henry didn’t steal it, and Henry voiced that he didn’t steal it, but the owner called Regina and Emma, I think. I went to stand by Henry, when Regina came in. She gave me a smile, and told the owner that she knew that Henry didn’t steal anything, but the other kids did. Emma came in and Regina told her to do her job, and do something with the kids. I left right after Regina, but not without telling Emma what little information I knew.

I was putting my groceries away, when a knock came at my door. I went to answer it, and saw no one there. I was shocked at first, but I saw a letter with my name on it. I brought the letter into the house, walked into the kitchen, and carefully opened the letter. I just about dropped it, after I read it. There was no signature on it, but I had an idea on who it was from. I was still in shock when Emma called me and asked me to come to Mary-Margaret’s house. I went and saw the 2 kids that Henry was talking to in the store.

“What’s going on Emma?” I asked as I looked at the kids and Emma.

“Is there…” but before Emma could ask me anything, Regina came up and told Emma that the kids had to be in Boston by tonight. I looked at all of them funny because I was completely lost now.

Mary-Margaret pulled me aside and told me that Regina had called Social Services, and that the kids would be placed in 2 different homes. I felt bad for the kids, but I couldn’t do anything. Later on that night, I went with Emma to carry the kids to Boston. I tried to start a conversation with the kids, but I was unsuccessful.

“What’s going on Emma?” I asked as Emma mumbled under her breath, and pulled the car off to the side of the road.

“It’s nothing, just some car trouble.” Emma replied as she called a tow truck.

I kept the kids calm as Emma stood outside the car, waiting on the truck. I wasn’t the least bit surprised when I saw the kids’ dad get out of the truck. I was happy when he took the kids with him, and I knew that they would be happy, but I gave them my number and told them that if they ever needed anything, just to call.

“That was really sweet of you.” I said as Emma drove me home.

“Thanks Hazelle and I’m glad that you were with me.” Emma said back as we pulled up to my house.

“I’ll always be there Emma.” I said with a smile as I walked into my house.

I felt better now knowing that those kids are going to be ok. I just hope that Regina doesn’t take her wrath out on Henry, when she finds out. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
