21. An Apple Red as Blood

I woke up feeling refreshed, and I’m happy about that because I haven’t had much sleep in quite a while. I finally decided to look at my phone, and when I did, I saw that I had a missed call and voicemail from Emma. I decided to listen to it because with Emma, you never know if something is wrong or not. The voicemail was Emma telling me that she was leaving town with Henry. I was shocked to say the least, but what really got me was that Emma said that she was hoping that me, her, and Henry would all leave town together, but she guessed that, that wouldn’t be happening. I decided after that, that I needed to go see her, so I got dressed, and headed to Mary-Margaret’s apartment, and lucky for that both she and Henry were still there.

“What’s really going on, Emma?” I asked as I crossed my arms over my chest.

“He’s not safe with her, Hazelle. So I’m doing what’s best for him.” Emma replied, but I still wasn’t convinced.

“What’s best for him? Or what’s best for you?” I asked with anger seeping into my words.

“It’s what’s best for him, Hazelle. I can’t let him stay with Regina any longer. I don’t know what she’s told you, but you know that I wouldn’t be doing this unless I knew it was for the best.” Emma replied.

I sighed because I didn’t know what to believe. I mean, Regina hasn’t told me anything, and I’ve known Emma since we were kids, but as of late, Emma has been distancing herself from me, and I think I know why now.

Before this argument between me and Emma could get worse, Henry said something about wanting me to meet a friend of his. I couldn’t think of anyone that I haven’t met, but then again, there’s one person that I don’t really know, and that’s the stranger that came into town. I left with Henry, and as we walked, I knew that he had some questions.

“I’m sorry you had to see that Henry.” I said as we started walking to Granny’s Inn.

“It’s ok Hazelle. I know that both of you are looking out for me.” Henry said back with a smile.

I’m proud of this kid because no matter what’s going on around him, he still keeps a positive attitude. We finally got to a room, and I was a little weirded out when a guy answered the door.

“August, this is my aunt Hazelle. Aunt Hazelle, this is August.” Henry said as he introduced us.

“It’s nice to finally meet you, Hazelle.” August said as he reached out his hand.

“It’s nice to finally meet you too.” I said back while I shook his hand.

Something is off about August, but I can’t quite put my finger on it.

“Does she believe?” I heard August whisper to Henry.

“Actually, yes, I do believe. I’ve always believed.” I answered for Henry.

August was shocked that I said that, but what shocked me the most was when he pulled his pants leg up, just a hair, and I saw nothing but wood. I knew right then, exactly who he was.

“You’re Pinocchio.” I gasped as he looked at me shocked.

“You can see it.” August said as he looked at me.

“Of course I can see it. Who could miss the wood you have for a leg.” I said back.

After a few more minutes of us talking, Henry said that it was time for us to go.  When we got back to the apartment, we noticed that Emma was packing her bag or box, I don’t know because she didn’t have much stuff when we came to Storybrooke.

“So you’re still leaving?” I asked as I closed the door.

“I don’t belong here Hazelle, and we both know that.” Emma replied with a frown.

“What about me? What about Henry? What about everyone that cares about you?” I asked getting upset.

“I’m really sorry Hazelle, but I think that this is for the best.” Emma said before turning around to answer Henry’s question, “Where did you get that?”

“Regina gave it to me for the road.” Emma replied, while I looked to where Henry was, and saw that he was looking at an apple turnover.

Before I could react, Henry took a bite out of the turnover. I was good for a few seconds before Henry fell to ground, unconscious.

“Henry!” Emma and I yelled at the same time.

Both of us ran to him, and tried to wake him up, but I knew that something was off. I hope that he didn’t do this in vain.
