Always and Never

Ariel Tanner believed that love was nothing but an illusion, a sick prank your brain pulls on you. But when she meets Harry Styles she begins to question everything she has put together about love. This frustrating boy was the only truly genuine person she'd ever met. How someone like him could even exist blew her mind. Harry, on the other hand, was amazed at how closed off Ariel acted. He made it his mission to knock down the walls she'd built around herself, because behind the flirting and the sarcasm, he got a glimpse of a girl that he wanted to become as close as humanly possible to. But did he really want to know everything behind those walls?

44. Kate

I took my clothes and makeup quietly to a washroom downstairs and got ready. I left a note for Harry and was out the door by 6:45.

'Kate invited me over, she said she needed to talk. Call me when you wake up, though I may be home by then. Love, Ariel Xx'

I lied a little bit in my note, but it was justified...

“You better explain what's wrong, or I'm kicking you out right now.” Kate demanded the second I walked through the door.

“No worries, I came to vent.” I sighed. My mind flashed back to Harry and I's first date. He told me to call any time, just to vent... I pushed that to the back of my head, I couldn't let myself get all gooey.

“Begin.” Kate insisted, leading me to the living room of her apartment. The whole place was maybe two or three times the size of my old one.

“Okay. Harry went out the other night and didn't tell me where he was going. Then he invited all the lads over for who-knows-what reason and they all left for an hour or so and then only he came back. I asked him what they did and he said 'nothing important'. Plus, in both instances he's been lying to me in some way about something, I just know. I can tell when he lies, and I have no idea what he'd lie about. I really don't think he'd hurt me, but I don't know. He wouldn't ch-cheat, do you think?” I took a deep breath after finishing, having said the whole thing very fast.

That c-word caused me physical pain to say. Kate's eyebrows pushed together in concern and deep thought. I grew more anxious every second she didn't speak.

“No, I don't think he'd cheat. I can't think of why he'd lie though. I'm sure he'll tell you eventually. It's probably a good secret.” She finally answered. I breathed out a sigh of relief. She always knew what to say, always. She was right, it's probably a surprise or something... But I still had that little nagging voice in the back of my head... He's cheating, he's cheating...

“Now, I have an announcement.” Kate grinned, taking a deep breath and turning to face me. I did the same, we sat criss cross on her couch.

“Proceed.” I smiled, waiting. I couldn't imagine what she'd have to announce... She looked suddenly, happy. More than happy, delighted, glowing.

“I met someone.” She smiled wider.

“What's his name?!” I questioned, taking her hand, ecstatic. I was so happy for her! Her smile faltered for a second.

“Scarlet...” She answered quietly.

“It's a she?” I asked, my grin widening.

“Yes...” She replied, wincing like she thought I'd yell at her, saying that she'd go to hell. Well, that I'd meet her in hell... Instead I squealed with joy, jumping on her for a hug.

“AHH!! When do I get to meet her?! How long have you known each other?! Are you in love??” I shot questions at her as she sat there grinning at me, laughing lightheartedly.

“We only met a week ago, uh, but I can't imagine love feels any different. And I-I don't know, you want to meet her?” She stuttered, looking near happy-tears. Before I could speak those tears began to run down her face.

“Why are you crying?? Of course I want to meet her! As soon as possible!” I exclaimed. I now grabbed both her hands, trying to get her to look at me again. She laughed quietly through the crying.

“I thought that you'd think it was weird, that I'm in love with a girl. I thought-” She began, I interrupted her.

“I don't care who it is you fall for as long as they're good to you! Babe! This is amazing! I want to meet her, like now. I want to tell her how incredibly lucky she is to have you as a girlfriend!!” I felt like the smile was going to never leave my face. Love was the best thing that ever happened to me! I was sure as hell the happiest person to see Kate find it! Now Kate was the one to jump in and hug me.

“Holy shit Ariel! I love you so much! Not like that- but you know what I mean.” She cried into my shoulder, slightly hysterical. I rubbed her back soothingly. We sat like that for a while, Kate every once and a while saying something that I couldn't understand. After she calmed down, we began making plans for Harry and I, and Kate and Scarlet to have dinner together. When Harry called me it was 9.

“Hey babe, you found my note.” I smiled. He's cheating, he's cheating.

“Yes I did. I have two questions... (yawn) When did you leave and when are you coming home?” Harry asked.

“I left at around 7 and I'll be home soon, probably.” I answered.

“Fair enough, how's Kate?” He questioned.

“Very good actually, we've made plans to get together for a double date in a week or so, I believe.” I grinned at Kate, who was across the room pouring a bowl of cereal. She nodded, she was all filled up with plans for a while. Otherwise I would have liked to meet Scarlet that night.

“Ah! Sounds good. Whom will she be bringing?” He asked.

“Her name is Scarlet.” I replied, listening closely for his reaction. I didn't like not being able to see his face.

“Brilliant. I can't wait to meet her. I'll see you soon sweetie.” He responded, totally cheerful. No fakeness.

“Bye.” I smiled, hanging up my phone and putting it back in my pocket. I went home soon after that, hugging Kate tightly before I left. I had to work, so I was home for lunch with Harry. He seemed normal today, no lies. It relieved me, but there was still that stupid little voice....
