Always and Never

Ariel Tanner believed that love was nothing but an illusion, a sick prank your brain pulls on you. But when she meets Harry Styles she begins to question everything she has put together about love. This frustrating boy was the only truly genuine person she'd ever met. How someone like him could even exist blew her mind. Harry, on the other hand, was amazed at how closed off Ariel acted. He made it his mission to knock down the walls she'd built around herself, because behind the flirting and the sarcasm, he got a glimpse of a girl that he wanted to become as close as humanly possible to. But did he really want to know everything behind those walls?

53. Cheating

What's wrong?” Harry questioned, sitting down on his side of the bed.

“Uh, I was just wondering... What did you do on your trip?” I stuttered. Stop looking like a chicken, nothing bad can happen. Yes, something bad could happen. He could break your heart. He looked confused for a moment, then for a fraction of a second I'd swear I saw panic in his eyes.

“We did some interviews, wrote with a few people in France. We celebrated Niall's birthday too I guess. Why?” He replied.

“Well, I found some of Louis' stuff here a couple days ago, so I decided to drop it by his place on my way to work. And, he was... there...” I replied, feeling a bit braver. Now there was definitely panic on his face.

“Ariel, let me explain.” He pleaded, shooting to his feet.

“You lied, and the boys didn't go with you on your trip. Did you meet a woman there? Is that what you've been doing when you disappear for hours at a time and then won't tell me where you've been?” I raged on, getting louder and louder.

“No! No!! That's ridiculous!! I would never cheat on you!!” He exclaimed, looking horrified. At himself, I think. It didn't seem to be directed toward me.

“Then what have you been doing??” The hurt was apparent in my voice.

“How long have you thought I was cheating??” He questioned.

“A few weeks, but that's not the point! What have you been doing??” I demanded.

“I- I, uh...” He stumbled over his words. I knew it. I knew it, I knew it!! I began to storm out of the room, but Harry grabbed me around my waist, sweeping me off my feet- literally.

“Dammit Harry! Put me down!” I moaned. I didn't want to deal with this anymore!! It hurt too much!

“Stop Ariel, seriously! Let me speak!” He insisted. He set me down on the bed. I brought my knees up to my chest, and held them tightly against myself. If he admitted to cheating I was gonna rip my heart right out of my rib cage.

“I wasn't cheating.” He promised. I stared at him, waiting for his excuse. He was conflicted. Holy shit has he forgotten how to speak!! I was dying! Please, I begged silently.

Maybe I was right to begin with, maybe love does always hurt in the end. If this turns out bad I'm never having a long term boyfriend again. One-night stands only. By the time Harry began his explanation, I was already planning which bar I should go to first.

“If I tell you the truth, will you please think about it for a minute, instead of freaking out?” He started. I nodded, if it didn't hurt to bad.

“The lads were there the first 5 days, but they came home. I didn't need a whole two extra days, but that was the only flight I could find. Anyway, I stayed later because I... I was ring shopping.” He finally spat out. Numbness filled my body. Then relief. Then shots of ecstasy.

“R-ring. Like... Engagement ring?” I stuttered. He nodded, looking panicked and distressed. Like he might pass out any second.

“Yes.” I mumbled.

“Yes, what?” He questioned. He looked kind of sick...

“Yes, I want to marry you.”

“R-Really? Oh my god.” Harry's panic had gone away and was now replaced with excitement. He jumped to his top dresser drawer, yanking out a small box. He fell down to one knee in front of me, a smile lighting up his features.

“I had this all planned out! Uh... You don't ha-have to be afraid. I promise to love you and take care of you forever. I swear to God that I will never hurt you. Please, don't say 'no' just because you're scared, 'cause I-I am too. I think we can do it. Will you marry me?” He stammered. It sounded like he had that memorized, like he practiced.

“I love you.” I whispered. I threw my arms around his neck, and we each knelt on the floor. I cried into his shoulder from relief and happiness. He rubbed soothing circles into my back. When I finally calmed down, he slipped the ring onto my left hand. It was a gold ring, with many very bright diamonds embedded in it. Amazingly beautiful. In the center, was a giant diamond, surrounded by a circle of tiny stones and gold. 3 rows of small diamonds, just a bit bigger than the tiny ones, ran down each side of the wider-than-normal band. Overall the diamonds almost completely covered the top half of the ring, interrupted only by the smooth folds of gold.

We smiled at each other. I kissed him, differently than normal. I'd decided what I wanted, and there was no changing my mind. We kissed for a while, soon ending up on the bed. I began to slip off my shirt. He hesitated.

“Ariel...” He began.

“I didn't want to do this at first with you because I didn't want a relationship that was only for sex, but I know that that isn't possible, because you actually love me. Tonight is a night we're ignoring our fears. I love you, and I've never wanted this more, with anyone.” I spoke, I sounded strong, confident. I stared into Harry's eyes, like he did to me all the time, trying to read his mind.

“You're sure?” He finally replied. I nodded. Harry began kissing me again, but his tone was different. I needed no other answer...

A/N Hello beautiful readers! I've included a picture of what Ariel's ring is supposed to look like. (I hope it works...) I just wanted to specify that the ring in the picture is white gold, while Ariel's ring is regular gold. Thanks for reading! Big love! -Xx
