Always and Never

Ariel Tanner believed that love was nothing but an illusion, a sick prank your brain pulls on you. But when she meets Harry Styles she begins to question everything she has put together about love. This frustrating boy was the only truly genuine person she'd ever met. How someone like him could even exist blew her mind. Harry, on the other hand, was amazed at how closed off Ariel acted. He made it his mission to knock down the walls she'd built around herself, because behind the flirting and the sarcasm, he got a glimpse of a girl that he wanted to become as close as humanly possible to. But did he really want to know everything behind those walls?

1. Best Song Ever

* A/N Hi! This is the prequel to After 18 Years! It doesn't really matter what order you read the two in, but I suggest reading After 18 Years first, it makes this one more ironic. People who have been reading that one will have already read this chapter. I hope you like it!! -xx *

“Come on Ariel, let's go out, have some fun!!” Kate begged. She stood in my doorway, wearing a short blue dress that went nicely with her pixie cut blonde hair. I sat in my pajamas on the bed that took up half of my tiny apartment. I didn't care how small it was. I could afford it with the money I made at work and the stuff I'd started saving at age 13. I moved out of my mum's house last summer, the day I turned 18. You could say I was the independent type.

“Kate, I told you on the phone, I don't feel like doing anything.” I groaned, flipping through the TV channels without paying attention to what was on.

“You live in London! Let's go out and find you a man!” She exclaimed.

“I'm not in a party mood.” I argued.

“You're only 18 once. Let's go make the most of it! Wear your favorite outfit, and let's go walk into the club like we own the place.” She persisted. I sighed. She was right. I needed some time out...

"Yolo? Really? That's your reason?" I tried one last attempt. It didn't phase her a bit.

“Please” She batted her eyes at me.

“Fine” I gave up.

“Yay! I can do your makeup!” She scrambled into the room and dug through her purse to find her makeup. I changed into a Beatles t-shirt and tight yoga shorts. The shirt showed about an inch of my tan stomach. I looked in the mirror. I wanted guys to pay attention to me, right? I took a scissors and cut a V out of the neck of the shirt. It exposed just the right amount of skin. I grinned at myself in the mirror. I wasn't nearly as dressed up as Kate, but it was hard to ever outshine her. I brushed through my long brown hair, and added a little curl to it. Kate put on my make up for me. I didn't mind, it's what she was going to school for. She'll be painting on the faces of celebrities one day. When she finished I looked like a new person. You could almost see the confidence forming a cloud around me.

“You look great.” Kate grinned, fixing her hair a bit. I couldn't hold back my answering grin.

I locked up the apartment and we got in my car. A black Volvo. It was my life. I loved that car. I drove to the only night club that I'd ever been to. It was where rich and famous people partied. The only reason I got in was because I knew the bouncer, he was my cousin.

“Hey! Joshua!” I exclaimed, and gave him a hug.

“Ariel! What brings you here?” He smiled.

“Well, we were looking for some fun and didn't want to wait in a huge line.” I laughed, looking back at the line stretching down the block.

“Your wish is granted.” He grinned wider, moving the rope for us. “Have fun kid.” He added.

“Thanks Josh.” I smiled. We walked into the club, the music making the whole place bounce. Lights moved and flashed everywhere. It was packed. As soon as I walked in I made eye contact with some guy at the bar. His mouth parted slightly when we looked at each other. I winked at him, a playful smirk on my face, then I followed Kate to an empty booth next to the wall.

“Okay, you were right, this is nice.” I yelled over the music. Kate grinned.

“I knew it!” She laughed. We ordered drinks and sat at that booth for a while. Multiple guys came up to us. I had 5 come up to me in the course of the hour, and 7 talked to Kate. Everyone asked us to either dance with them, or to get a drink, but they all got rejected. None of them really clicked... After about an hour, a boy approached me. It was the same boy I had noticed when we walked in. He had on tight black jeans, and a plain white t-shirt. The way he walked, and how he presented himself, made him look like he thought of himself as a bad-ass. He had super curly hair that went everywhere, but at the same time every strand seemed to be in place. A few tattoos were inked down his arms and peeked out the collar of his shirt. I wore that playful smirk once again as he closed the distance between us.

“Hello!” He shouted over the music.

“Hi!” I answered.

“My buddies bet me I couldn't start a conversation with the hottest girl in the club, wanna buy some drinks with their money?” He mirrored my smirk. Kate giggled beside me. I snickered at his awful pick-up line, despite my heart speeding up in my chest.

“Sure.” I agreed. I watched his face light up at my response. Glad I could make your night.... Something about the guy made me unable to say no... Which I assure you was not like me at all. Kate grabbed my arm as I began to stand up.

“You said yes?” She mumbled in surprise. I shrugged. I guess I did... “Go have fun.” She grinned. I grinned back. The curly haired boy put his hand on the small of my back as we walked toward the bar. We sat down and he ordered me a drink that I'd never heard of. I watched as he shot a thumbs up at some blonde guy a few seats down.

“So what's your name?” He asked.

“Georgia Rose Tanner, two first names.” I lied. I never gave anybody I just met my real name. I got this one out of a book I read.

“How about you?” I asked.

“Harry, one first name.” He smirked at his joke. We received our drinks then.

“Harry what?” I prodded lightly, not really caring if he told me his last name or not.

“Styles.” He said hesitantly. Harry Styles. He was famous, wasn't he? Nah, someone famous would have had a better pick up line. I took a drink of whatever he'd ordered me. It was great!

“Good drink, One-first-name Styles.” I said, taking another sip.

“It's my favorite.” He grinned. Despite how good it was I didn't finish it, the first few chords of my favorite song interrupted us.

“Come on, let's dance!” I laughed. I grabbed his arm and pulled him onto the dance floor. His dancing was so bad, is was probably the cutest thing I'd ever seen. After the song ended, he told me to wait where I was. He disappeared for a minute, but then came back. After that the DJ played the song on loop. Styles and I danced all night, to the best song ever. We didn't leave each others side until the club closed, and they kicked everyone out. We stood out on the sidewalk while Kate waited for me in the car.

“I like you Styles.” I smiled.

“I like you too, Georgia Rose. Here.” He smirked, handing me a piece of paper. It had his name and phone number on it. “Call me.” He grinned.

“Maybe.” I grinned. I thought about kissing him for a moment, but then decided against it, turning around and walking quickly to my car.

“He totally just checked you out as you walked away.” Kate winked at me when I got into the passenger seat. I rolled my eyes, but I hoped she wasn't kidding... Kate drove us home, and she slept over. I called Styles in the morning. We set up a date for that night...
