11. Chapter 8

"Okay, so I'll meet you at the cafe at 10?" asked Harry.

"Yeah sure." I replied, hanging up the phone.

I was dreading meeting up with Harry. The amount of time we'd spent apart from each other and now... I had to face him. I only had half an hour to get ready... to make myself look as though I hadn't been blaming myself for the breakup... to look as though I hadn't spent most of my time crying over the fact that he'd left me. I had to make myself look decent, so I threw on some skinny jeans, pulled my black vest top over my head and put on my black converse.

I didn't feel like walking... I just wanted to get it over and done with. I decided to take the car and before I set off, Beth ran outside and came up to the window.

"Where are you going?" she asked.

"To meet somebody. I won't be long." I replied.

"Is it okay if I use your shower?"

"Yeah sure. There's some coconut shampoo in the basket. Help yourself." I said smiling.

"Thanks!" she shouted as she ran back inside.

I set off to the cafe and arrived 5 minutes early, so I decided to order a cappuccino. By the time they brought it over, Harry had arrived and the hairs on my arms stood up as he walked closer to the table. He looked fantastic! His hair had been cut... not too short, he still had his luscious curls. He was wearing a white Rolling Stones t-shirt with black jeans that clung to his hips and his legs were still sexier than mine. He smiled at me and sat on the other side of the square table.

"Hi." he said smiling. He didn't feel awkward at all.

"Hi. Do you want a coffee?" I asked, my hands shaking from how nervous I was.

"Yes please." He called the waitress over and she winked at him after taking his order.

"What was that?" I asked, referring to the cheeky little wink.

"Oh they always do that."

I swirled the spoon around the cup and avoided eye contact with him. I couldn't bare to look at him.

"So... about that phone call." he said.

I moved my eyes slowly up to meet his and his green orbs twinkled.

"It was meant to be a joke to a friend." I told him.

"A joke? This must be a close friend then?" he asked.

"Not that close actually. We haven't really spoken in a while... anyway, hows you?" I tried changing the conversation but he didn't agree.

"Is it Niall by any chance?" he asked.

I paused.

"No... no, just... a friend."

"Let me get this straight. You would send a message... like that... to a friend you barely even speak to... as a joke?"

"Yeah. Am I not aloud to have a joke with my friends?"

"It is Niall isn't it?"

"It's not Niall!" I was beginning to think he knew something.

"Then where were you last night?" he asked.

"Last night?"

How the hell did he know I went out last night?!

"Yeah. You sounded pretty drunk to me."

"Oh! Beth came round and we had a few drinks."

"Who's Beth?"

"My half sister."

"Oh, your dad's daughter."

"Yeah. There's Diana too. You already met Leon."

"So you get on with them now?" he asked.

"Kind of. We're not that close though."

My phone rang and it was Beth.

"Sorry I have to take this." I told him, walking into the toilets. "Beth what's up?" I asked her.

"Macie! My mums been taken into hospital and D says it's urgent!!" she cried.

"Beth calm down! Where are you?"

"At the hospital with Dad and Leon! Please hurry up!!"

"Okay, I'm coming now!" she hung up and I ran out to Harry. "I'm so sorry Harry, I have to go." I told him.

"What for?" he asked.

"There's been an accident and I have to go... I'm sorry." I ran out to the car and he ran after me.

"Macie wait! I'm coming with you." he said, jumping in the passenger side. I didn't kick him out of the car, I was too busy focusing on Janet. I drove quite fast to the hospital and I think I went through a lot of red lights... I just needed to get to her. Harry waited in the car and I ran inside.

"Macie!!" Beth called and ran over to me.

"Are you okay?" I asked, hugging her.

"Stressed! Come on!" she dragged me into the elevator and along the corridor to the room Janet was in.

She was lying in a hospital bed with tubes in her body. Diana was sitting next to her, resting her head on her hand. Dad and Leon were sat on chairs outside the room. I ran to Dad and hugged him.

"Is she going to be okay dad?" I asked him.

"I don't know Macie. I don't know if she's strong enough to hold on." he replied, crying.

I hugged Leon and sat next to him.

"It's going to be okay Leon." I said, trying to reassure him.

"Like I haven't heard that before." he replied.

It felt like we were waiting for hours outside that room. We took in turns to go in and say something to her. I guess we thought she would make it through if she heard our voices. I was the last one to go in and I shut the door behind me. I sat next to her and held her hand, rubbing her knuckles.

"I know we've never met before Janet but, I'm Macie, Billy's daughter. I just wanted to let you know that even though you're ill... you will make it. You just have to fight and stay strong. I've never been at deaths door before, but I've been in a similar situation. I managed to make it through though, because I had my family to look forward to. When my dad came back, I was shocked, but someone made me realise that family is everything and you have to love them with everything you've got. Janet, if you can hear me, please stay away from the light and fight to stay alive. The kids need you, Billy needs you... I need you. I need someone to go shopping with when my mums busy and someone to go to for advice on what to get my dad for Christmas."

I wiped my eyes and carried on my speech.

"I've been getting close to Beth and I hope I can get close to you. The kids talk about you all the time and they love you with everything they've got. They need you here Janet. Please, stay strong." I let go of her hand and left the room.

Harry was standing next to the chair which Beth had fallen asleep on. He hugged me as I cried. He rubbed my back and I wiped my eyes again.

"Where have the others gone?" I asked him.

"Home. They needed some sleep so I told them I'd bring you and Beth home later on." he replied, letting go of me.

"I'm sorry for rushing off earlier on. Beth needed me." I told him.

"It's fine. She's a lucky girl to have you there for her."

"I can't believe it. I never thought I'd say this but... I kind of feel sorry for my dad. I mean, if Janet dies then... my dads gonna be alone and what if he wants to die too?"

"Janet isn't gonna die and neither is your dad. They are strong and they will survive this together."

I sat on the chair next to Beth and Harry knelt down in front of me.

"Macie. There was something I was going to ask you... before we broke up. It's probably the wrong time now but..." he paused and pulled a small, black jewellery box out of his pocket.

"Harry, wait." I said.

"Macie... I want you to have this. It's my grandmothers promise ring that my grandpa gave to her on his death bed. I promise to always love you... even if we aren't together any more. I still care about you Macie and I know you care about your family as much as you care about me."

He slid it onto my finger and I hugged him.

"Thank you Harry. It's beautiful. I do care about you too." I replied, smiling.

He kissed me on the cheek and sat on the chair next to me. It was quite late and we were all tired. I slowly fell asleep and a couple of hours later, I was woken up by the sound of beeping. The machine in Janet's room was beeping really loud and Beth was standing next to the window. Janet's bed was surrounded by doctors and Harry was holding Beth's hand as she cried out for her mum. I went over to see what was going on and Beth looked at me.

"What's going on?!" I asked her.

"I don't know! She started to have a fit and then she stopped moving!" Beth cried.

One of the nurses covered Janet's face with the blanket and they all came out with a sad look on their faces. The nurse looked at me and shook her head. Beth fainted into Harry's arms and I cried my eyes out.

She didn't make it.
