3. Chapter 2

12am and a loud banging woke me up. Laura was in the kitchen, crouching behind the counter. A shadow at the door kept on moving and it looked like someone was trying to get in.

"Get down." she told me.

"Why?" I asked.

"Just do it! Who knocks on someone's door at this time?" she asked.

"It's probably Harry."

"He has a key doesn't he?"

"Oh yeah. It's probably Maddie... or mum."

"They've been knocking for almost ten minutes. Don't you think they would've gotten the message that we're not opening the door." she asked me.

"Well, open it and see who it is." I told her.

"No! I'm scared it might be a murderer. Have you never seen those films where they let a stranger into their home and he ends up keeping them hostage and they end up dead?" she asked.

"No." I replied.

"Well it could happen. Just wait for them to go." she told me.

The shadow disappeared and we slowly stood up. A sudden knock on the living room window scared the life out of me and Laura fell to the floor. I grabbed hold of her and sat next to her on the kitchen floor.

"Ring Harry!" she cried.

"My phones in the living room." My hands were shaking and Laura whimpered as we waited for the stranger to disappear.

"I'm scared Macie." she told me.

"It's okay. Stay here, I'm gonna get my phone." I slowly crawled into the living room and the shadow stood still. A deep feeling in my stomach made me tremble with fear and I got the feeling that they knew we were awake. I grabbed my phone and crawled back into the kitchen.

"Right, the curtains are closed so they can't see us. I'll ring Harry." I told Laura. I dialled Harry's number and he picked up the phone.

"Macie it's so early!" he groaned.

"Harry... you need to come home right now! There's someone outside the house and I think they're trying to get in! They've been here almost twenty minutes! They won't go away!" I cried down the phone.

"Macie calm down! Shut the curtains, lock the door and turn all the lights off."

"It's a bit too late for that. They already know we're in."

"I'm coming home! I'll be quite a while though Macie so I don't know what you want me to do?" he asked.

"Hello!" the stranger shouted through the letter box.

"Harry!!" I cried.

"Macie calm down! Don't open the the door whatever you do!" he told me. He hung up the phone and left Laura and I panicking.

"Who is it?" Laura shouted back.

"Laura!" I shouted at her.

"It's... it's... just open the door!" he shouted back.

"No! Not until you tell us who you are!" I replied.

"Macie please!"

"How do you know my name?!" I asked.

"Just let me in Macie!"

I slowly moved over to the door and reached for the handle. I turned the key and looked back at Laura. She nodded and stepped back as I cowardly opened the door. A tall, soaking wet man was standing in front of me, holding a bag and a suitcase.

I couldn't believe it! After all this time, he had the nerve to return to my house. My home... the only place I felt safe. My eyes filled up with tears and my hand covered my mouth.

"Dad." I said.
