8. Chapter 8

I scanned my eyes as I was sitting up at a bar. Which bar? Oh I’m not even sure to be honest with you anymore. I yawned and looked at the time and almost had a heart attack when my phone read 4am. I guess I wasn’t exactly into the whole clubbing and going out to the pub type of scene since my last incident. I sighed and rested on the back of the bar stool as I spun it around and looked at the bar again.

These pubs were getting old really fast. They were all dark with loud music playing in the background. There was also the annoying fact that it was always smokey in these pubs as well. I guess it was an Irish thing to love it, and yes it was cool to go to the pubs every now and then, not going to 5 a night. We were on the fifth one of the night as the boys wanted to keep bar hoping. I didn’t want to object or seem like a party pooper so I let them carry on. Somehow they kept themselves entertained with the sloppy girls in each of these joints.

That’s what I was doing before. I was scanning the crowd in attempt to find a half sober girl out there. There wasn’t. I liked going out and having fun and being social but it’s hard when everyone is drunk off their asses. It was hard to have a good time and go dancing and be care free when the guy you were dancing with was falling on top of you.

I put my head in the palm of my hand as I scrolled through twitter on my phone. I had received a lot of attention recently, much to my dismay. Most of the stuff that was said about me or too me wasn’t terrible, I actually really liked interacting with the girls who were nice to me, it was almost a breath of fresh air.

Just as I was about to reply to some people who had popped up in my mentions the bartender came over my way. I looked up to be greeted by a handsome younger male.

“Can I help you with anything?” He smiled and looked at me.

I nodded my head, “No thanks, I’m good.” I smiled politely back at him.

He nodded his head, “So what’s a young girl like you doing in a bar full of drunken idiots?”

I laughed and sat back on the bar stool, “Apparently I’m the babysitter for my lovely friends and family over there.” I waved my hand to the group of guys over having the time of their lives on the dance floor.

He scrunched up his face, “That’s the worst kind of babysitting.” He laughed and sat back on his side of the bar.

I nodded my head and smiled, “If I don’t babysit for them, nobody will and I don’t think I would ever see them again.” I said laughing some more.

He smiled a warm smile. He was really attractive. He was probably around 24 or 25 and hard dark brown hair. From what I could make out he had lighter eyes, maybe green or blue. He had a very prominent jaw line and had some scruffiness as well. He also had a very deep and thick Irish accent that seemed to just melt me away.

“It’s the sad truth about most of these people.” He threw his rag that he was holding onto some glasses, “There’s nothing wrong with having a few drinks here or there, I mean I do it.” He motioned toward himself, “But if they were to see themselves right now I bet they would be ashamed.”

My eyes lit up, “That is exactly my take on things sir!” I almost jumped out of my chair.

He laughed, “My names Conner.

“I’m Emma!” I said with excitement again.

“So Emma, where ya from? Clearly you aren’t from around here or form this half of the globe with that accent of yours.”

I smirked, “I’m from the states as you can probably tell. Originally from Ohio but now located in Southern California. I mean if you know where those states are, but yes the United States.” I rambled on a bit, as I tend to do when there was a hot male in front of me.

He nodded his head, “Sounds like a blast.” He had a smile on his face

I nodded my head again and looked away to check up on the boys, and there they were happily dancing away with the trashiest of girls I have seen. I shook my head again and looked back over at Conner.

“So Conner, I’ve got a question for you.” I asked before thinking about what I was talking about and he raised his eyebrows for me to keep asking, “Are people here, in Ireland, always so friendly?”

He looked almost taken aback by my question, “Well, I guess, yeah. People just enjoy having a good time and that means keeping company. And it does help when you’re attractive.” He winked at me. My cheeks turned a violent shade of red and I had to look away quickly.

To my surprise I saw Niall walking over towards me. This was shocking because it almost seemed like he was avoiding me the whole night. He plopped into a seat right next to me and gave me one of those warm Niall smiles that would just melt your heart.

He motioned to the Conner, “Two shots please!” He practically screamed at him. Conner nodded and walked off.

I shook my head, “Niall I’m not drinking tonight.”

He gave me a pouty face, “Please just for me?” He asked. He seemed surprisingly sober. However I wasn’t buying it and shook my head no.

Just before Niall could counter Conner came back over and set the shots in front of us.

“Oh hey Emma,” He said quickly before Niall could try and get me to take a shot with him, “Could I get your number; maybe we could go out sometime?” He said looking slightly embarrassed.

“Of course!” I said probably all too quickly. I scribbled my number down on a piece of paper and handed it to him.

“I’m not supposed to do that at all, you know ask the customer for their number. I just couldn’t resist.” He cooed at me. This made me blush like crazy, of course. “I’ll call you sometime.” He said again before he had to run to the other side of the bar to take some more orders.

I turned around to face Niall who had a cold hard look on his face.

“What’s your problem?” I asked while he was looking rather irritated at the whole situation that had unfolded before him.

“I don’t like him, not a bit. He’s trying to take advantage of you Em.” He said, it was almost as if he wasn’t drunk at all. This was quite surprising.

I rolled my eyes, “Okay dad.” I said sarcastically.

He looked really irritated after that comment. What in the hell was his problem. “I’m being serious Emma. He’s trying to take advantage of you. I’ve seen it so many times before.” He grabbed my hand in his.

What the hell. Why was he doing this? “What’s it to you?” I backfired clearly irritated with his comments. I wasn’t stupid, I wasn’t naïve, I was an adult and I could make my own damn decisions without him deciding my fate.

“I’m just trying to protect you, that’s all.” He looked down at his hands and started playing with them.

I decided I would end the conversation right there at that very moment. I hadn’t known Niall or Conner long enough to start pointless drama. Niall sighed and I immediately looked over to him and gave him a questioning glace.

“I’m sorry, I jumped to conclusions, and I didn’t mean to sound like an ass.” I nodded my head to his response clearly accepting the apology.

He continued on, “I don’t know why I’m telling you this because it probably sounds really creepy but I might as well say it. I don’t know what it is about you Emma; I can’t see you getting hurt. Such a kind and sweet gentle soul doesn’t deserve to get hurt, okay? I know you aren’t stupid but people are different here than they are in America, please just be careful.”

Niall didn’t seem in the least bit drunk as he was having this deep conversation with me in the middle of a pub.

I smiled, “Thanks Niall, I will. I promise you.”

He nodded his head, “I’m bored, do you want to head home? We can drag Sean and AJ out no problem.”

I relaxed in relief, “I’ve been wanting to hear that all night.” I ran my fingers through my hair.

He smiled and nodded.

It was a pain to drag Sean and AJ out of the pub but we finally managed to do so. I ended up driving as I had decided not to drink. Niall sat next to me on the passenger’s side and AJ and Sean were passed out in the back of the car.

Driving to and from downtown Mullingar was becoming less of pain as I seemed to have to do it almost every night.

Niall poked me in the arm, “By the way, I will get to take a shot with you. You may have avoided it tonight but just you wait Emma, you will trust me.”

I laughed and scrunched my face, “Good luck with that Niall, shots are not my thing. I can barely even handle a few drinks much less a shot.”

He smirked, “Such a lightweight, we’ll have to change that.”

I laughed, “Mhm, good luck with that Mr. Horan.”

He laughed again. God his laugh was so attractive. I smiled and continued on driving home. I think I was starting to get feelings for Niall. He was just the perfect boy. The way he reacted tonight just kind of solidified those feelings that I had for him. Surprise surprise the way that he felt about protecting me was starting to make me fall for him. He probably thought of me as friend, protecting a friend. Lord whatever Niall did made me fall for him a little bit more each and every time.

I sighed and sat back in the car seat and just kept on driving.

“You okay?” Niall asked me as he looked over. There was concern in his eyes.

“Yeah, just fine. Just thinking.” I smiled at him and kept my eyes on the road.

He nodded his head and the rest of the way home was silence. A peaceful silence, a very nice type of silence.

When we got back to my house we dragged Sean and AJ to their respective beds.

I offered to drive Niall home but he kindly rejected and said that he would just spend the night here and go back to his place when he woke up.

We both ended up in the kitchen as we were both scavenging for some food. We talked casually since we were both pretty tired. I looked over at the clock and it read 6am.

“Can’t sleep?” Niall asked me.

I shook my head no, “Yeah same, wanna watch a movie then?” He asked me.

“Yeah actually that sounds like fun. He nodded and flashed another one of his brilliant Niall smiles. We decided on watching Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

We started out on opposite sides of the couch before I eventually fell asleep with my head in his lap.
