We Are Young and Doomed

Milly Farber is tired of being boring, withdrawn, and socially awkward. At least, that's how she sees herself. She is determined to enjoy life. To stand out. To be exciting. To excite someone.

Jasper Hewn always took notice of the quiet little blonde girl who kept to herself at the back of the class. He always thought she seemed intriguing. But he never had the nerve to say hello.

Told from both perspectives in short bursts. Each chapter title is something the character is feeling, but it doesn't necessarily reflect the contents of the chapter. It's more of a reflection of their nervousness and self-consciousness within the situation.

9. Why Isn't He Doing Anything?

He wasn't seeming to get the hint that I wanted him to hold my hand again. And I didn't want to be the one to make the move. He liked holding my hand, right? He just seemed so nervous. What if he didn't want to hold my hand again? What if he didn't really like me after all? Was that why he was sitting so far away?

And then, suddenly, he had scooted closer to me. And he was holding my hand. It felt wonderful.

"Hey Jasper," I said quietly, almost not wanting him to hear me.

"Yes?" he asked.

"Do you like me?" I asked.

He swallowed hard. Oh, here it comes. A kind of or maybe even a no. What if he was just being mean to me? What if he was just teasing me?

"I have liked you for a really long time," he said as quietly as I had asked and my heart skipped in my chest.

I didn't think anyone had liked me as Milly. Especially not for a long time.

"I liked you when you were quiet," he said. "And I like you now that you're not as quiet, Milly... I mean, Liscent."

"That's just confusing, isn't it?" I laughed, realizing now that maybe being Milly wasn't such a bad thing. "You know, you're the only person I ended up telling to call me Liscent at all today. Do you want to just stick with Milly?"

"You don't want to change it anymore?"

"No," sighed. "Milly is fine."
