We Are Young and Doomed

Milly Farber is tired of being boring, withdrawn, and socially awkward. At least, that's how she sees herself. She is determined to enjoy life. To stand out. To be exciting. To excite someone.

Jasper Hewn always took notice of the quiet little blonde girl who kept to herself at the back of the class. He always thought she seemed intriguing. But he never had the nerve to say hello.

Told from both perspectives in short bursts. Each chapter title is something the character is feeling, but it doesn't necessarily reflect the contents of the chapter. It's more of a reflection of their nervousness and self-consciousness within the situation.

11. I'm Scared to Move

He was so close, leaning over my seat. And he looked so concerned.

It was interesting, waking up to his brown eyes. They were so... active. It looked like something was being processed behind those eyes nonstop. Like he was constantly thinking about something. I couldn't let go of them once I had them looking in my direction. I didn't want to do anything to mess that up.

He cleared his throat once our staring contest had bled into the awkward time zone. I smiled bashfully and unbuckled my seatbelt as he leaned back into his seat.

"Thank you for tonight," I said. "I had a really, really nice time."

"Me, too," he smiled and scratched the back of his neck. "I'd like to do it again sometime."

"Me, too," I said quickly and nodded too excitedly.

He laughed and held out his hand awkwardly, like he wasn't sure what to do next.

I took his hand and held it for a moment, smiling and not sure what to do next either.

"Well, I'll see you at school on Monday," he said.

"Or sooner," I smiled. "Maybe we can do something again this weekend. You have my phone number."

He nodded and smiled.

He was just too adorable. I couldn't leave the car having simply held his hand for a moment as a goodbye. So, I leaned toward him to kiss his cheek.
