7. Chapter 7

Dimune dodged nimbly through the trees, being as cautious as she could to stay quiet. Even though much fury burned in her heart towards the humans, the elf she was following could not get the human king’s son back on his own. The fairies had quietly grown too strong in their magic. Dimune had no wish for her race to be destroyed and knew how much depended upon this.

She stiffened as she recognised the entrance up ahead, before raising her hands. A white glow was emitted from them as sparks shot up her arms and covered her from head to toe. When they cleared she was no longer visible to the rest of the world.

Ilith hesitated as the thick jungle of vines blocking the entrance to the fairies’ lair in front of him parted. Someone knew he was here. He passed through the arch with an ever-quickening pace, wishing he had returned to Ehlia instead of choosing to deal with the finding of the human himself. But it was too late now.

In front of him a clear path meandered through the trees, which were so tightly packet together he didn’t think the fairies could fit in there at all. Where the path ended was a small stream filled with light blue water that looked like it reflected the sky- a sky that was black and filled with stars. It wasn’t deep, and looked like you could easily walk through it. But when Ilith reached it, he put his foot cautiously in the water. He lowered it further, but it did not touch any bottom.

There wasn’t one.

Dimune smiled to herself. He was more clever than she had given him credit for.

He leapt for the other side. Her eyes widened as the river did to. The bank disappeared beneath the waves and Ilith landed right in the middle of it, disappearing under the surface where he landed. Shocked, he came up spluttering and tried to swim for the bank. Dimune cursed that she’d been fooled by the fairies’ trick. Now, she countered it with her own power. The river slowly narrowed but she could feel their magic trying to widen it again. Ilith managed to grab the edge of the bank and pull himself up. Dimune began to struggle to keep the river narrow.

Whispers could be heard from ahead where the path continued through the trees and was lost from sight. The fairies were waiting for them. She could feel their anger and knew they would not hesitate to put her fellow elf under spell before he could do a thing.

Ilith had moved towards the sound. Gritting her teeth, Dimune ran towards the river and jumped, only just managing to get to the other bank. She withdrew her magic from the river and ran as it started to widen again, through the path. Looking back, she realised it had stopped growing and the fairies were letting it go back. But then she looked back to Ilith just as he started to collapse to the ground in front of one of the fairies.

The fairy’s green eyes slowly turned lighter in colour as he dropped to his knees.

“Oh no you don’t” Dimune said softly. The fairy looked up, surprised. Dimune stood there, creating a shield around Ilith, but still invisible. Her spell broken, the fairy hissed in fury as Ilith pulled himself up. More fairies appeared out from the trees. Ilith swallowed nervously.

“I’m not here to fight” he said to them “But I need to talk”
