22. Teenage Runaways

Haley's P.O.V.

I woke up to the sound of rumbling. Not like a car on a road; different. I didn't want to open my eyes for fear of what I'd see. Just then, I heard a deep, loud whistle sound. My eyes shot open and my breathing quickened. My vision was blurry. It eventually cleared up after a few moments. I cautiously looked around. I was in a train car. The more I looked, the more I saw. I saw people sitting against the walls. They were bundled up, though.

"Ah, look who's awake." he laughed. My head whipped towards him. "Jacob, please take me home." I begged. "This is your home." he laughed. He kept glancing down at my stomach. I protectively put my hands over it. He chuckled. "Don't worry. I've already handled that problem." I looked at him suspiciously. "W-What do you mean?" I stuttered.

He reached in his coat pocket and pulled out a plastic bag. It was filled with little white pills. On it was a word written in big, black sharpie. A-b-o-r... "No!" I gasped. "You didn't! Please say you didn't!" I yelled, the tears streaming down my cheeks. "I couldn't have a little kid running around here." he simply told me. He acted like it was no big deal. "You killed it! You killed my baby!" I screamed and stood up. I grabbed him and started hitting his chest with the sides of my fists as hard as I could. He pushed me away and I fell back on my bum. "Haley, don't make a fool of yourself." he demanded. I continued to cry. "Please let me go home." I whispered. He shook his head. The tears continued to fall silently.

"Hey! Ryder!" he called. A door leading to another train car opened and in walked a boy. He was about 6 feet tall with shaggy blonde/orange hair and blue eyes. He looked oddly familiar. "Ryder, this is Haley. I want you to watch her and be her owner." Jacob told him. Owner? Ryder nodded and looked down at me. "Don't mess this one up." Jacob spat and went into the other car. Ryder stuck his hand out to me. I just stared up at him. "It's okay, love. I won't hurt you." he reassured me. I stayed where I was. He sighed and sat down next to me. I scooted a bit away from him.

"Haley, I'm sorry this happened. I didn't chose to be here, either." he told me quietly. I didn't respond. He glanced down at my stomach. "You're pregnant?" he asked. I shook my head. "I was." I said, my voice cracking. His eyes filled with sympathy as he realized what I meant. "I'm so sorry. You and Harry would've made great parents." I looked over at him. "How do you know I am married to Harry?" I asked curiously. "Who doesn't know." he chuckled.

I looked down at my hand and noticed my ring was missing. I gasped. "Where's my ring?!" I cried in horror. Ryder reached inside his pocket and pulled out my sparking, silver ring. "Here. Jacob told me to get rid of it, but I saved it for you." he explained quietly. "Thank you." I replied, taking it out of his hand and sliding it on my finger. "You might not want to keep it there. Jacob will take it away." he suggested. I nodded and put it in my pocket for now.

It was just then I noticed my hair. I gasped and brought some into my vision. It was a deep red. "What is this?" I asked Ryder. "Jacob had someone color your hair so you wouldn't be recognizable. I looked down at my clothes. I had a black tank top, dark denim waist shorts and a red and black plaid shirt that was unbuttoned. I felt the chill of the wind blow on me from the little crack where the sliding metal door wasn't closed all the way. I ignored the cold.

I placed my hand on my neck and found my necklace. I guess Jacob didn't see it. I looked at the small heart and held it in my hands. I opened it. I admired the picture of me and Harry. I read it for the hundredth time. 'Forever & Always, no matter what. I'll always be here for you. I love you. xx H'. A single tear fell down my cheek. "Did Harry get that for you?" Ryder asked, breaking the silence. I nodded. "He gave it to me for my birthday." I told him. I closed it and tucked it back under my shirt where it couldn't be seen.

I looked over at Ryder. He was watching me with sadness. "When can I go home?" I whispered. "I'm sorry. But no one ever leaves here. Once a runaway, always a runaway." he admitted. "A runaway?" I asked. "That's what we are. Jacob calls this group the 'Teenage Runaways'. Even though half of us aren't even teenagers." he explained. I looked out a small hole in the rusty metal wall of the train car. I saw a large, green field with a few scattered trees. "Where are we?" I asked. "I'm not allowed to tell. Sorry." Ryder apologized. "Are we still in the US?" He sighed. "I'll say no to that. But I can't you an exact location." I nodded and looked back out.

A small pebble came up and hit my eye. I wiped it and felt something in my eye. "What the?" I said quietly. "Those are contacts." Ryder told me. "Contacts?" "Yeah. Colored contacts. So your eyes are green now instead of blue." he responded. "Oh." I simply said. I felt my pockets. "My phone?" I asked. "Jacob tossed it out of the train about 50 miles back." he admitted. I looked down at my feet. Worn black and white converse.

"Can I at least tell Harry I'm okay?" He shook his head. "I'm sorry. You're pretty restricted here." he apologized. Just then, I heard a ringing sound. Ryder reached inside his pocket and looked at his phone. "How come you get a phone?" I whined. "Because, Jacob trusts me." he responded. He declined the call. "Who was it?" I asked him. "Just...nobody." he sighed and shoved his phone back in his pocket. "I need to do something. Just stay here. I'll be right back." He stood up and went into the other car.

I looked around at the people. 2 girls, an older woman and a little boy. I stayed where I was and placed my hands down on my stomach. "I'm so sorry." I whispered, trying to hold back my tears. "I'm so, so sorry."
