Reunited, but broken hearted

Annie Jenkins moved away from Holmes Chapel about ten years ago. She left behind the five best friends she had ever had, and the one boy she fell in love with--Marcel, or Harry, Styles. But all too soon, Annie and Harry grow apart.

She hasn't seen Harry in a decade. But when her old school, Holmes Chapel High School, sends her a letter saying that she's invited to a reunion, she, thanks to the pushing of her roommate, Marie, heads down to Holmes Chapel, where she is reunited with Harry again. But the man she meets at the reunion isn't the sweet boy she fell in love with ten years ago. Something happened...and Annie is determined to find out what. You may want to read My Friend Marcel first. Otherwise you're going to be pretty confused.

I stepped back, and snapped my gaping mouth shut.  “Max…Wh—what…what are you doing here?” I whispered.  Max stuck his hands in his pockets and smirked at me.

“I live here.” He nodded at Thor, who growled deep in his throat.  “Nice dog.” He said again.

“Thanks.” I replied. Max reached out to pet him, and I cleared my throat. “He’s a former attack dog, and he just loves to chomp people’s fingers off. He hasn’t been fed yet today, so I wouldn’t touch him if I were you.” I jerked Thor back as he barked menacingly.  “Unless you want to pull back a stub.  Then of course, by all means, pet him to your heart’s content.” Max laughed, and my spine tingled again.

“Still the same old Gweny.”

“My name is Annie.” I said, lifting my head. “Annie Jenkins.”

“You’ll always be Gweny to me.”

“I’m nothing to you anymore, Max.” I snapped.  “I’m not dating you anymore. It’s been, what—thirteen years?”

“And not a day goes by where I’m not wishing I was with you.” Max said dramatically.  I rolled my eyes.

“Save it, Max.” I tugged on Thor’s leash, and Max grabbed my arm.  Thor barked loudly and snapped at Max’s leg.  He jerked away.

“Look, Gwen, I just wanna talk.” He tried.  “I’m really sorry for hurting you all those years ago…and I wanna apologize.” He rubbed the back of his neck. “I know I hurt you, badly…and I regret that—but I wanna try again…start over.”  Start over… The words were etched into my brain, and I was reminded of myself saying the same thing to Harry just yesterday. Let’s just start over again…Harry…

“There is nothing that you can do to ever make me want to get back together with you.” I said, then brushed past him and tugged on Thor’s leash again.  “C’mon, Thor.  Let’s get out of here.”

“I’ll see you around, Gwen.” Max called.  I turned back, and shook my head.

“Keep dreaming.”

“So, wait a minute.”  Marie held up a hand, and leaned back further into the couch.  “Let me get this straight.  You think that you like Harry again, and that he may like you.  Today, you ran into your jerk of an ex, and he wants to get back together with you.  But you don’t want anything to do with him.”

“Yeah.” I sighed.  “Mar, I don’t know what to do!”

“Um, it’s actually rather simple.” Marie said. “Who do you like better—Harry, or the ex?”

“Harry.” I answered immediately.

“Then I think you just answered your own question.”  Marie smiled, and leaned back again, tapping her chin thoughtfully.  “What are the odds that this Max guy came back just now?”

“I know…” I groaned.  “I hate this!” I ran a hand through my hair and sighed.   “Enough about me. What’s been going on with you and Zayn?”

“Don’t even ask.” Marie rolled her eyes.

“What happened?”

“What part of ‘don’t even ask’ do you not understand?” She snapped, standing and crossing her arms over her chest, glaring down at me. I held up my hands.

“Okay, okay, calm down!”

“I mean, he can be sweet,” Marie suddenly exploded, waving her arms around. “But one second he’s fine, and the next he gets all moody and he won’t talk to me and I don’t know what’s wrong and he won’t text me back, and he starts acting all weird, and I don’t know how to deal with it and I’m just….AUGH!” She sank down into the cushions again, and sighed. “We got into a fight on our last date…I don’t even remember what it was about, but it was bad, and I told him to never talk to me again, and he said fine by him, and he hasn’t tried to talk to me since.” Marie groaned. “Why can’t I just keep my big mouth shut? I miss him, Ann….like really badly.  I haven’t felt this way about a guy before! And I didn’t even know him before last week, and I can’t remember what I did for fun without him there, ya know?”

“Yeah…I think I know what you mean.” I shook my head. “Look at us. Two losers in love.”

“Don’t I know it.” Marie huffed. “Let’s talk about something else.”

“Like what?”

“Um….what are you wearing to Liv and Louis’ wedding?” She asked.

“Um…I don’t know…When is it again?”

“In like a month—“ The phone rang, cutting her off. I picked it up, and pressed answer.

“AUUUUUUGH!” I jerked the phone away from my ear and yelped. “ANNIE I NEED YOUUUUUU!”

“I’d be happy to help if I knew who this was…” I said.

“It’s Liv.” I heard a sniffle.

“Oh! Hey! We were just talking about you and Louis—“

“NO!” She sobbed into the phone.  “The wedding is off! It’s off!”  I looked at my phone in disbelief, then sighed and grabbed a pencil and paper.  I scribbled on it, and handed it to Marie.

We’re gonna need a lot of ice cream.
