Sarah is 18, but her life is far from any other high school senior's. Her mother died when she was 16; her father became a drug addict, smoker, alcoholic, and Sarah's worst nightmare. Why? Well, he abuses her.

Sarah doesn't tell anyone though, not even her best (and only) friend Lexi because her father told her that he would hurt her little sisters that her mother left her to raise when it became clear her father wouldn't be able to.

Sarah goes to work one day expecting it to be like every other day. Little does she know she is in for one heck of a surprise.

8. Louis, I'm Scared

Sarah’s POV:

We got home at around 11 and of course Lexi had been waiting for me to get home.  She demanded I told her everything and I was so happy I easily spilled all the little details.  I finally got in my bed ready to go to sleep at 1.  I tried to close my eyes and go to sleep but every time I closed my eyes images of the movie showed up.  At around 1:45 the images turned into flashbacks of my father hitting me.  I tried to make them go away but nothing would work.  Tears were streaming down my face at a steady pace as I suddenly remembered Louis’ promise.  I grabbed my cell phone off my bedside table and quickly found his number.  Come on pick up pick up pick up.  He picked up on the last ring.

“Sarah, what’s wrong?” he asked me, his voice groggy from sleep.

“I-I’m sorry.  D-did I wake you up?  I didn’t m-mean to.  I am just sc-scared,” I quietly answered.

“No, no don’t be sorry.  Are you crying?  Why are you scared love?” his response faster than the first.

“E-every time I-I closed m-my eyes I s-saw the movie.  B-but t-then it turned into f-flashbacks of my d-dad abusing me,” I stuttered, feeling the tears make their way down my face.

“Shhhhh, babe, you are going to be okay.  You don’t need to talk about it right now.  Why don’t you tell me about something that makes you happy?” He told me.  I hardly heard him though because there was shuffling on the other end.

“L-Louis, what are you d-doing?”

“I’m coming over.  I don’t want you to be scared.  Why don’t you keep talking until I get there,” he told me.

“No, don’t come over.  I’ll be okay.  I just wanted to talk to you.  It already calmed me down,” I told him.

Silence was on the other end as he contemplated coming over still or not.  “Okay.  But if you change your mind just call me again.  Okay?”

“I promise.  I’m better now.  I’m going to go to sleep because I’m really tired now.  Goodnight Louis.”

“Okay, if you’re sure.  Goodnight.”

I closed my eyes and finally managed to find sleep.

I dropped off Sarah at 10 and got home ten minutes later.  The boys were all up watching some stupid television show when I walked in.

“So Lou, you gonna tell us where you were tonight?” Harry asked when I sat down on the couch next to him.

“Okay, so I was on a date, but you guys probably figured that out,” I said sarcastically.

“With who?  How did it go?  What did you do?  Are you going to see her again?” The boys all asked rapid fire style.

“Her name is Sarah, it went really well, we went to Nando’s and went to see Mama, and yes; tomorrow actually,” I responded to all their questions without taking a breath.

“All good choices Louis.  So tell us about her.  What does she like to do?  What does she look like?” Liam asked.

‘Well, she loves music.  Playing it, listening to it, anything involving music she loves; she’s even a fan of us.  She has long brown hair and the bluest eyes.  Like you Niall.  Except right around the edge of the middle she has specks of green and gray.  She’s about 5’5 and has the smallest hands.  She looks down at her feet when she is nervous and her checks turn bright pink when she’s embarrassed,” I took a breath for emphasis, “She’s perfect.”

“Sounds like someone was bitten by the love bug,” Zayn said in a sing-song voice.

I heard mumbling somewhere off in the distance and then a sudden jolt of pain went through me.  “Oi!  What was that for?” I yelled at the person of which the hand belonged to.

“I asked when are we going to meet her?” Harry yelled in my ear.

“I don’t know, I can invite her over Monday night for dinner considering it’s a holiday in school.  I’ll ask her if she Lilliana, Autumn, and Lexi want to come.”

“Whoa whoa whoa.  Who are Lilliana, Autumn, and Lexi?” Niall asked.

“Lilliana and Autumn are her sisters, both younger than 7, and Lexi is her best friend whom she lives with.”  I chose not to share the bit about her father because the boys didn’t need to have that information yet.  I’m going to let her decide if she trusts them; which I know she will after a while.

“Oh okay, cool.  Sounds good man, can’t wait to meet her,” Harry said.

I nodded as I went upstairs to go to sleep.  “Goodnight guys.”  I got a chorus of ‘goodnights’ back.

As soon as my head hit the pillow I was out; but not before putting my phone right beside my head like I promised Sarah.

I was rudely awoken from the sound of – what was that? – oh, it was just my phone.  Wait!  My phone!  I had to squint to see the bright screen that was illuminating my bedroom.  Sure enough, it was Sarah.  I quickly unlocked it and asked her what was wrong.

“I-I’m sorry.  D-did I wake you up?  I didn’t m-mean to.  I am just sc-scared,” she quickly but quietly answered.  Her breaths were shaky and short, and I knew she had been crying.

“No, no don’t be sorry.  Are you crying?  Why are you scared love?” I asked her.  I was so worried about her.

“E-every time I-I closed m-my eyes I s-saw the movie.  B-but t-then it turned into f-flashbacks of my d-dad abusing me,” she stuttered as a new wave of sobs came on.

“Shhhhh, babe, you are going to be okay.  You don’t need to talk about it right now.  Why don’t you tell me about something that makes you happy?” I tried to calm her down, but knew I was getting nowhere.  I should just go over there.

With that thought I got up and pulled on a t-shirt and whatever random shoes were lying around on my floor.

“L-Louis, what are you d-doing?” she asked me as I pulled on my jacket.

“I’m coming over.  I don’t want you to be scared.  Why don’t you keep talking until I get there,” I told her.

“No, don’t come over.  I’ll be okay.  I just wanted to talk to you.  It already calmed me down,” she responded.

I stayed silent as I thought.  I was really worried about her, but I guess her confirmation of being okay would have to be enough.  “Okay.  But if you change your mind just call me again.  Okay?”

“I promise.  I’m better now.  I’m going to go to sleep because I’m really tired.  Goodnight Louis.”

“Okay, if you’re sure.  Goodnight.”

Great, now I’m up worrying about Sarah.  I’m not going to go back to sleep.
