Sarah is 18, but her life is far from any other high school senior's. Her mother died when she was 16; her father became a drug addict, smoker, alcoholic, and Sarah's worst nightmare. Why? Well, he abuses her.

Sarah doesn't tell anyone though, not even her best (and only) friend Lexi because her father told her that he would hurt her little sisters that her mother left her to raise when it became clear her father wouldn't be able to.

Sarah goes to work one day expecting it to be like every other day. Little does she know she is in for one heck of a surprise.

15. I Will Protect You, Always

Louis’ POV:

I woke up around 3 in the morning and decided to go up to a bed where I wouldn’t get a kink in my neck. I picked up Sarah and brought her with me.

I put her in the bed before sliding in next to her. I tried to close my eyes but I couldn’t fall asleep. My mind kept replaying the worst possible scenarios that could happen with the whole court thing. What if her dad wins? What if the judge thinks the best place for her sisters is with her father? What if she doesn’t approve of where they are living after Sarah wins? What ifs kept popping up into my mind as I worried so much I almost made myself physically sick with the thought.

I looked over at Sarah and watched her sleeping peacefully. She was so special to me and I wanted to do anything I could to keep her in my life. All of a sudden it hit me. I was on break, wasn’t I? I was, and I only had around two weeks left. There was no way I was going to leave Sarah; especially not in the position she is in having to raise her sisters and all. How was I going to make it work? I made a mental note to call Paul and see if there was any extra room on the tour bus.

Sarah’s POV:

I woke up to an empty bed and quiet talking. I looked around the room and found Louis on the couch in the corner. He was facing the other way so he didn’t see me sit up. When he hung up he turned around and saw me. He came over to the bed and put his head in the pillow. I scooted over so that I was closer to him and started rubbing circles on his back. “What’s wrong Louis?”

He sat up and looked at me with sad eyes. “I was just on the phone with Paul, our tour manager. We are on break for the moment but we start back up again in two weeks. We still have three months to go. I asked if you and your sisters could come and he said we didn’t have enough room. I don’t know what I’m going to do now.”

I looked at him and I was on the verge of tears. He wrapped his arms around me and tried to calm me down but the tears fell anyway, making his shirt wet. I looked up at him once I thought I couldn’t cry anymore. “Well how are we going to do this?” I ask as I lean on him.

All of a sudden he sits up and smiles. “My mum,” he said.

“What about her?” I asked, curious as to what his plan was.

“You can go live with her. That is if you win the custody of your sisters in a week, then you can go live with her and my sisters. They live in a big house with plenty of room. You can finish high school with Fizzy and Lottie and Sarah could go to primary school with Phoebe and Daisy. We can make this work. Do you want me to call her?” he asked after he shared his plan.

I nodded my head before saying in a timid voice, “But not right now. I just want to spend some time with you. Please? I know the boys and Lexi already took care of my sisters. Please?”

“How could I say no to you?” he teased as he laid back down.

We laid there in silence for what felt like hours but what was really only half an hour. The whole time Louis was playing with my hair, calming me. He eventually breaks the silence by saying, “I will protect you, always,” kissing the top of my head before I snuggle closer to him and fall back asleep.

Louis’ POV:

She fell back asleep so now was the perfect time to call my mom. I moved Sarah so that she was using an actual pillow and not me. I then stood up, grabbed my phone and walked downstairs into the kitchen. I scrolled through my contacts and clicked on my mum’s. She picked up after the third ring.

“Hello Louis! What a surprise. How are you?”

“I’m good mum. I know it’s been a while. I’m thinking of coming out to visit you guys before I go back on tour!” I said, eager to get to the part I was calling about, but realizing I should talk to her first.

“Oh I know the girls would just love that Louis! So why are you really calling?” My mum knew me so well it was scary.

“Oh well I got a girlfriend, and she has two sisters she takes care of. They are six and two. Her mum died two years ago when she was 16, and her father isn’t quite,” I paused, looking for the right word. “Quite qualified to take care of them. She is going to try to get custody of them a week from today. She doesn’t have anywhere to go though while I’m gone and I don’t want her to have to stay here with her sisters alone-”

“And you want her and her sisters to come live with us?” she asks cutting me off. “Louis that would be just lovely. When will we get to meet her?”

“Um I was thinking about bringing her with me when I come to visit and then I would just leave from there?” I told her, ending it in a questioning voice.

“I would love that darling. I think it would be a great idea. And your sisters can help take care of hers. Maybe if she gets comfortable enough with us, she can leave her sisters with us and can fly out to see you? Have you talked to her about it yet?”

“I have actually. She was okay with the idea. Thanks mum, this means a lot to both of us.”

She laughs before saying, “Of course Louis. I can’t wait to meet her. She sounds nice.”

“She is. I can’t wait for you to meet her. I have to go because I think I hear her getting up. Bye mum I’ll call you later.”

“Bye Louis!”

I hung up and breathed a sigh of relief. At least she was going to be taken care of while I was gone.

I walked quietly upstairs and into my- well I guess now it’s our- bedroom. Sure enough she was up and on her phone. “Are those MY sweatpants?” I asked, putting a hand over my heart and emphasizing the ‘my’.

“Why yes, yes they are and they are very comfortable,” she giggles as she locks her phone and stands up to walk over to me. “So, what were you doing?”

“Talking to my mum,” I said as I wrapped my arms around her back and she wrapped hers behind my neck. I looked down at her.

“What did she say?” she asked looking down nervous for my answer.

“Well, you will be living in Doncaster for three months. Is that okay?”

She looked up at me in shock for a second processing what I said. Then a wide smile grew on her face as she pulled me in even closer and kissed me. It lasted for the best thirty seconds of my life before she pulled away and hugged me tightly. “Now all that’s left is for me to win this court battle,” she whispered into the sweatshirt I was wearing.

“There is no doubt in my mind that you will win this case. And even if you don’t, I told you, I am going to protect you, always. You and your sisters. I promise.”
