Olivia Santos moves to a small town to live with her father after her mother was murdered. He has a new family now, and Olivia hates him for getting to start again. After a while she needs to escape, and this is how she finds herself at the tree.
The beautiful tree, with the beautiful river, and after a while the beautiful boy.
But when Olivia's father starts acting weird, and his new wife starts sharing her secrets, and then Olivia is kidnapped, things go a little loopy.
Who is Olivia's dad, really?
What does he want from Olivia?

7. Axolotl

“So what is your dad looking for here in this crap town?” I ask.

He laughed. “It may sound really stupid.”

“Oh, yep. Sure! Try me!”

He stops laughing. He sighs. “Sorry, I cant tell you.”

“Why not?”

He picks up a rock and throws it towards the river. We have been sitting here for 2 hours. “Because I usually get teased when I tell people.”

I frown at him, then I pull my best puppy-dog face. Wide eyes, big lips.

He Laughs. “Don’t pull that face at me!” I shoved him in the shoulder playfully.

“you really think I would tease you?”

“I don’t know you much yet.”

I snort. “where is this going?”

He chuckles his big goofy laugh. “I’ll tell you, Liv.”

I wait. I stare at him with pleading eyes so he doesn’t back out of this.

“Okay,” he starts, “My dad came to this town to look for Axolotl’s.”

What the heck are those? “Uhm, okay.”

“Axolotls are these little fish like animals that usually get confused with waterdogs. They are like tadpoles.”

“Gross.” I shudder.

“I know.”

I see a leaf drop next to me. I pick it up and study it vaguely. “Alex, I want to know something.”

“If anything happens, will you be there for me?” I ask.

He turns and faces me. “I promise.”

I smile and think about my mum. How my dad wasn’t even there to promise her the same as Alex just promised me. Alex is wearing a watch, so I ask him what the time is. It is 4:30, so I should get back.

“I gotta go, Alex.”

I stand up to leave, brushing the dirt of my legs.

“So, ill see you here tomorrow?”

He turns away, so I didn’t think he heard me. I turn around and walk maybe 10 metres before I feel a hand on my shoulder. I turn to face the most beautiful boy in the world, Alex.

“This is in case I don’t come back tomorrow.”

And with that, he leans forward and crushes his lips on mine, wrapping his arms around my waist and pulling me closer. I am shocked at first, but then I get more comfortable with the kiss, and start to kiss him back. I run my hands through his beautiful hair. We kiss for a long time before he pulls apart.

“Bye Liv.”

I don’t say anything but I give him a little wave as I turn to go. I walk 20 metres and then look back. He isn’t there. I sigh.

“bye, Alex.” I whisper.

And with that, I run the rest of the way home.

No one is at dad’s home when I get back. Lucky, because I was late again and I didn’t really want to be questioned again. I walked to my room and put a jumper on, then ran down the stairs again. I saw my dad’s car pull into the driveway. I sat down on the couch and watched Grace, Dad and Lucy walk through the door.

“Where were you?” I ask, not even turning to look at them.

“Just in town.” Dad replies. “Where were you?”

I didn’t answer.

Well, I tried, but I couldn’t.

Because someone had put a sock in my mouth.

And stabbed something sharp into my shoulder.

Causing everything to go black.
