2. The 1st Doctor

THE 1ST DOCTOR

First came William Hartnell, Doctor number one.

At times grumpy, very old, not much fun.

The mysterious man, and his Unearthly Child,

Kidnapping teachers Ian and Barbara was wild.

We know that from Susan his granddaughter, the name TARDIS came,

Sad really, as she doesn't get much fame.

Ian and Barbara are whisked away,

To the Stone Age for the day.

At this point we don’t know where they are from,

They said they were exiles, did they do wrong?

No time to explain as a sucker is seen,

Causing a scared Barbara to scream.

The next week it is revealed that the Daleks are here,

And all those peaceful should shed a tear,

The Doctor’s arch nemesis has arrived,

Hundreds of times they would be revived.

The TARDIS crew go through twists and turns,

To Marco Polo in China, they are perturbed.

The Aztecs, and Barbara is mistaken for Yetaxa, and her stopping sacrifice is not fine,

"You cannot rewrite history! Not one line!"

The Sensorites explores The Doctor’s home more,

And Susan’s telepathy is accounted for.

Then there was France, and getting shrunk,

Remember this all started from a pile of junk!

Then we had The Dalek Invasion of Earth, where it was time to take a stand,

Pitting his wits, The Doctor and his motley band.

The first invasion of Earth, the first time he says: ‘No!’

This ancient alien has far to go.

But in London, 1964, Susan says: ‘Grandfather I belong with you!’

And with that The Doctor bids her Adieu,

She is the first companion to leave,

The Doctor hopes she will fit in, belong and achieve.

Then, in The Rescue, we met Vicki,

A teenage orphan, that could be tricky.

Then there were Romans, webs and the crusades,

The Doctor rushes to his companions’ aids,

In The Space Museum, disguised as a Dalek, a jack of all trades.

1966, in The Chase, we say goodbye,

To Ian and Barbara, and The Doctor’s emotions are shy.

He lets them go, with no hugs or tears,

Though Ian and Barbara land on Earth out a couple of years!

Then we meet Steven, individual and proud,

Him and The Doctor’s arguments could be loud.

Together there are Vikings, Drahvins and Mission to the Unknown,

It’s nice to see The Doctor is never left alone.

The Myth Makers, we see Vicki’s last story,

She does get an exist full of glory,

Falling for Trolius during the Trojan War,

She’s now Cressida, not Vicki anymore.

Then we have disaster in The Dalek’s Master Plan,

Unfortunately in the twelve part epic companion Katarina had a short life span.

The first friend of The Doctor, dying on the show,

She saved them whilst fighting a foe.

Then there was Sara, in the episode too,

This really shocked me and you,

Save her Doctor, you really must,

Because poor Sara aged and turned to dust.

Then to Paris, another orphan named Dodo,

No, they didn’t meet Quasimodo.

Gunfighters, Savages, goodbye to Steven and then WOTAN tampers with genes,

Causing Dodo to depart in The War Machines.

She leaves a message, with sailor Ben,

And secretary Polly, but then,

The Doctor takes off, not knowing they’re around,

His jaw really does hit the ground.

Smuggles and then The Tenth Planet,

Filled with dirt, dust and granite.

The Cybermen first appear in this chilling thrill,

They convert humans into themselves, they hurt, and they kill.

One of the most memorable villains, now is seen,

Mechanical, unemotional, silver and lean.

They do defeat the Cybers, but The Doctor falls ill,

Collapsing in the TARDIS, they think he’ll die until,

”Ah, yes! Thank you. It’s good. Keep warm.”

Will this new process be the norm?

Doctor Who, killed by the Cybermen,

That’s what we thought, oh no, but then,

A light surrounds and his face is distorted,

The Doctor dying? No, it’s sorted.

There are many ways to describe, but an easier translation,

One word, one magician, it’s called: ‘Regeneration.’

A new face, a new man,

New advenutres, a new companion clan,

But we must remember, the very first one,

And how Doctor Who begun.

That old man, and granddaughter, and his box,

With its doors and double locks,

Changed British Sci Fi, aliens and creatures,

Mystical, gripping and powerful features.

But for now, the first Time Lord’s time is done,

But always remember the first, the great number one.
