6. Gardens

It was dark inside the greenhouse.  Avery had never ventured to this part of the house.  It was cold in side and her body was racking from uncontrollable sobs already.  She didn't even bother to close the door she just went forward through the next.  She was outside now and the sun had just gone down.  A maze of hedges and plants lay ahead of her and she thought why not?  How much more lost can I be.  She heard footsteps slap the wet pavement behind her and quickly she went into the maze.  It devoured her with twists, turns, and unexpected stops. Her name was called out in the distance by Niall and he was getting closer.  Her pace quickened and she leaped over fallen branches.  She stopped heaving and pushed herself into the hedge on the side.  She could hear someone coming and held her breath.

"Avery, please.  I just want to talk,"  Niall's voice sounded innocent and soft.  She really didn't want to be alone right now.  Sarcastic remarks and rude comebacks filled her head but all she said was why.

"Why?" her voice was like honey slow and thick.  Niall swiveled around and their eyes met for the first time in a long time.

"I got jealous," he spoke quicker now, eager for forgiveness.  He started to reach forward but she pushed him back.

"So you decided to sleep with my best friend?" Avery spat at the ground.

"It didn't look like you would care.  You were to busy with Easton or whoever."  Niall's voice was steady which usually happened when he was trying to control his temper.

"Easton and I are no longer together," Avery said in a monotone.  She lifted her head up.  NIall had his arms crossed.

"What happened?" Niall sympathetically asked.  And for a moment she forgot what Niall had done.  She forgot the huge fight.  She forgot that anyone else was there. And it was just them.  They walked together Avery speaking fluently with no emotion the whole time.  She knew if she let happiness sadness would come along.  Eventually they stopped at a large pond with leaves and branches hanging above it.

"I used to come here," Niall said once Avery had finished.  They were sitting at the edge by the water.  Avery's fingers fumbled with grass plucking it.  "It was when we were first signed. Nobody knew about us really.  I really felt alone then.  Kind of like you are feeling now."

"You know why I am feeling like this right?  Because of you and everyone else,"  Avery said truthfully.

"No, don't try to say you know what it feels like because you don't.  My parents are divorced and haven't exchanged words in forever.  My bestfriend hates my guts and wants to kill me.  My other bestfriend can't remember a thing about anything.  My ex-boyfriend made out with my bestfriend.  My boyfriend broke my heart and cheated on me.  I am alone, everyone has someone.  But me," Avery had the lump in her throat.  The one you get before tears start coming.  She pushed it down.  She looked at Niall to see what he thought but their lips met before she was halfway around.  She stood up and walked away.

"Please,"Niall said.

"You can't just do this.  You can't be the one to make me feel happy and proud.  I can't be in love with you. Every person I trust either leaves or betrays me.  I can't let people in like I used to.  We can't be the way we were.  I can't trust anybody except Liam. Harry, Zayn, and Perrie.  Louis is amazing and always listens but he seems so distant all the time.  Like he can't remember who he is," Avery whispered the last part.

"Can't we be friends or something,"Niall looked sad and disappointed.

"Of course,"  Avery said and she wrapped her hands around his neck pulling him into a hug.  He held her tight and probably to long for just friends.  But when they separated it was like brother and sister.

"Back to the house?" he asked her.

"Yeah, and promise me something," Avery said pulling him up.  He nodded.  "You won't punch Easton or anything."

"Oh you don't have to worry about that,"Niall grimaced at his name. Avery looked back at the shady place from this angle it was quite spectacular.  Avery would come back.

"Race you?"  Niall asked her.

"Not fair, you know it better than I do," she whined.

"30 second head start," Niall offered her.

"I'll take it," she said and slapped his hand.  Off she went with Niall in the tracks grinning.

Niall's  P.O.V.

She is absolutely oblivious.  I love her to death but that's the thing she can't see.  I can't be just friends with her.  She drives me mad in every way.  The way where she plays with her hair absentmindedly.  When she lies her eyes glimmer.  When shes nervous her hands band together like tangled vines.  She is so different though.  I love her so much, but she won't ever love me again.
