Hogwarts- Second Year

Amy Matthews, a witch in Harry Potter's year, tells the story from their perspective.

9. Whispers

There was only talk of the attack on Mrs Norris over the next few days; nothing else seemed to matter. Everyone had begun to avoid Harry Potter and his friends, as they were found at the scene of the crime, so they were bound to be suspects.

History of Magic was usually as boring as ever, until Hermione Granger asked a question;

"Professor Binns, what do you know of the Chamber of Secrets?"

The ghost professor tensed up. Or it looked like he did.

"Very well, Miss Granger, I shall have to tell you; you have a right to know,"

He had the classroom's rapt attention for the first time. Everyone leant forward.

"Over 1000 years ago, you know that this school was created by the four Hogwarts founders; Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw and Salazar Slytherin. They all worked in harmony, until Slytherin wanted only pure bloods to come to this school. The other founders said no, and Slytherin left the school. Legend has it, that before he left, he built a chamber. The Chamber of Secrets. This chamber is said to behold a true horror, something only the heir of Slytherin could control,"

The class began to babble, almost scared. It was just fairy-tales, wasn't it? Amy was told this story when she was little. Stories were made up all the time. Although, what happened to Mrs Norris was no accident...

Harry Potter was believed to have caused the attacks, and people had begun to avoid the boy, like he was a bad penny. Destruction seemed to have followed him throughout his life, so far.

Jenna looked very puzzled every time the story was mentioned, as she didn't understand what it meant, as a Muggleborn. She had checked out a copy of Hogwarts: A History to see if she could find anything. Nothing prevailed.

Darren was more worried in case the thing attacked again; he had been told last time a chamber was opened, a girl died. The heir of Slytherin might have come to Hogwarts, so he suspected a first year, otherwise the chamber would have opened last year or before that.

Amy wasn't bothered much by the story, as she had more pressing things on her mind; Quidditch and the piles of homework she had waiting for her back in her dormitory. She had gotten three detentions this week because she was practising Quidditch instead of doing essays. The detentions were from Professors Snape, Lockhart and McGonagall.

In the Hufflepuff common room, Amy and Darren were doing their Charms essay, which was meant to be 2 foot long, but they were still eleven inches short.

"God this is too much!" snapped Amy. "I can't be expected to do all this by Wednesday! Don't teachers realise that students have other classes as well as theirs?!"

"Apparently not," muttered Darren. "At least Professor Sprout and Professor Binns doesn't give us much homework,"

"Binns gives us loads, you just do it in his class," said Amy.

"Whatever!" said Darren with a grin. "I'm not the one with a detention three nights this week!"

"Shut up!" said Amy with a giggle. Gabe comes over to copy their homework.and chat.

"How many inches have you done?" asked Gabe. "I've only got eight and a half!"

"Stop moaning, we've still got to do Snape's essay," Amy groaned.

After dinner that night, the trio walked to the spot where Mrs Norris was 'petrified'. There were new words on the wall; The Chamber has been opened.

Gabe and Darren looked horrified. They ran into the nearest door, which happened to be a girls bathroom.

Moaning Myrtle drifted towards Darren, looking upset as usual.

"What's wrong?" he asked politely.

"Oh you know, just thinking about death," she said, sniffing."I was just trying to kill myself, bt then I remembered I'm dead,"

"Oh," said Gabe. They turned to leave, but Myrtle floated in front of them.

"You can visit me whenever you like," she hissed, and then went back to her toilet.

The boys ran as fast as they could out of the door, hoping Myrtle would never find them again.

"Where's Amy?" wondered Darren.

"Probably gone back to the common room, we're not really supposed to be out after nine," said Gabe.

They found Amy laughing about their encounter with Moaning Myrtle with Ernie Macmillan.

"I did warn you two!" she said brightly.

"She's so creepy," mumbled Gabe.

"I'm never going near there again!" shouted Darren. "But, what about that message? The Chamber has been opened!"

The common room exploded.

"WHAT?!" cried a sixth year girl.

"WHAT THE HELL?!" shouted a first year boy.

People rushed to the exit to go to the corridor where the message was found. Amy, Darren, Gabe and Ernie were the only ones left in the common room.
