11. The Duelling Club

November and December spread chills across the castle. People walked around in knitted groups, since news about the little first year Gryffindor boy being attacked spread around the school like wildfire. People had begun to sell talismans and fake charms to ward off Slytherin's beast.

Amy woke on Sunday morning dreading the next day; school. She had Transfiguration and Defence Against the Dark Arts on Mondays, which she would be told off for not doing her homework for the second time in both classes. Amy just didn't have the time any more, not with all the procrastinating and talking she had to do nowadays. The group of friends she had was expanding, as Ernie Macmillan and Justin Finch-Fletchley often joined Gabe, Darren, Jenna and Amy herself.

Potions turned out to be the worst lesson of the week; Amy had just finished concocting her perfect Swelling Solution, and Snape was just walking around the classroom, checking everyone's potion. He nodded at Amy's which meant she had done well. A loud explosion went off in one of the Slytherin's cauldrons; the potion splashed everywhere. Draco Malfoy got a face full of it and swelled up like a balloon. Darren's arm was all bloated and puffy, and Ernie's leg was weighing him down.

"SILENCE!" Snape roared. "Anyone who has been splashed, come here for a Deflating Draught,"

An orderly queue formed. When everyone had been successfully deflated, Snape pulled a firework out of the cauldron.

"If I find out who did this... I'll make sure they're expelled," Snape hissed angrily. He eyed Harry and Ron closely. He dismissed the class and stalked off, scowling.

A week later, on their way to breakfast, Jenna and Amy noticed a new letter pinned to the notice board. They walked over to see the sign saying that there was to be a new Duelling Club to be set up that night.

"Shall we go? Duelling could protect us you know!" Jenna said brightly.

"I bet it's run by Lockhart," muttered Amy.

"What's bad about that?!" Jenna said huffily, going slightly pink.

"He's not a good Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher that's all!" Amy snapped.

"Compared to Quirrel?" Darren asked, strolling up towards them. "We might as well go, it will be a laugh!"

It was the opposite from a laugh; Lockhart was indeed running the club, but his assistant was Snape. Tonight's spell they were supposed to be practising was the Disarming spell;  Expelliarmus. They were divided into pairs; but not of their choosing. Amy was put with Gregory Goyle, whom she recognised as the Slytherin whom's cauldron exploded.

Goyle had no idea how to use a wand properly; he tried the spell, it backfired on him, and then he stood there cracking his knuckles at Amy. The rest of class wasn't much better, as Millicent Bulstrode, a ghastly humongous Slytherin, had Hermione Granger in a headlock.

"Why don't we let some students demonstrate for us?" said Lockhart, brightly. "How about Potter and Weasley!"

"No..." said Snape. "We'd have to send Potter to the Hospital Wing in a matchbox... how about Malfoy?"

Harry and Draco mounted the stage. They bowed to each other, and then Lockhart counted to three, and Draco struck first on two-

"Tarantellgra!"

"Rictusempra!" Harry retorted.

"SERPENSORTIA!" Draco bellowed. A large black snake had been conjured. Then it began to move towards Justin Finch-Fletchley. Harry made a hissing noise from his mouth, and the snake turned towards Harry. Snape then dissolved the snake into ashes and dismissed everyone. Ron and Hermione grabbed Harry and dragged him back to the Gryffindor tower.
