Hogwarts- Second Year

Amy Matthews, a witch in Harry Potter's year, tells the story from their perspective.

5. Back again

The Great Hall looked even more appealing than usual. Hufflepuff house walked down the aisle and sat down at their house table. Amy was excited to see all the new first-year students being sorted into their houses. She remembered that she was disappointed with Hufflepuff at first, but she has grown to love it.

Suddenly, the timid first-years filed in. They all looked terrified of the place. There was a few bits of muttering, people pointing out their brothers and sisters, and then them laughing at the first year that tripped over. He got up and shuffled away.

Professor McGonagall stood at the front of the crowd, with the old Sorting Hat and a stool. She unrolled the scroll of the 40 students that would be in Hogwarts this year;

"Abigail Beasley!" Professor McGonagall called. A tiny little girl stepped forward, shakily. She was sorted into Gryffindor.

Amy zoned out until they called "Luna Lovegood!" who was sorted into Ravenclaw. Darren nudged Amy as his little sister, Michelle, went up. She was sorted into Hufflepuff. Darren relaxed as she came down to sit next to him.

Finally, "Ginny Weasley!" was sorted into Gryffindor, and Professor Dumbledore stood up and silenced the entire Hall. He said his usual speech, about the Forbidden Forest and curfew. Then he clapped his hands and all the delicious food appeared. Now Amy paid attention.

The children piled up their plates happily and began to wolf down their food. Everyone was chattering away happily, until one of the Weasley twins asked where their brother Ron was. Then people started asking where Harry Potter was. The entire hole began to shout "HARRY POTTER!" and "RON WEASLEY!" and the first-year Ginny Weasley began to cry.

"SILENCE!" boomed Albus Dumbledore. Everyone went silent. "Professor McGonagall and Professor Snape will go and find Mr Potter and Mr Weasley with Mr Filch. Please sit down, all of you."

The hall sat down. The Weasley children huddled together, and Fred and George cracked jokes as to where Ron and Harry could be.

"They could be in the Whomping Willow! That would be awful!" laughed Fred.

"Don't say that Fred, you never know..." tailed off George.

Desserts appeared on their tables, and half the people forgot about Harry and Ron. The three teachers had slipped away to go and find them. Amy finished her plate of brownies, just as Dumbledore stood up and the food disappeared.

"Up to bed you go! Wake up early so you can fill your brains with new things tomorrow!" he chuckled.

Amy, Darren and Jenna began to sprint towards the exit, so they could grab the seats by the fire in the common room. They ran down the stairs to the basement, and tapped the rhythm of Helga Hufflepuff onto the barrels outside the common room and they crawled through the tunnel, only to be disappointed that the seats had been taken up by large seventh-years.

Jenna and Amy raced to their dormitory, now marked 'Second Years'. Their possessions had already been bought up to their bedroom, where they'd be spending the next year learning more magic.
