A Secret is Meant to be Kept

When Ron lashes out at Hermione and gets them into a sticky situation, Hermione transports herself back in time. But the Marauders Era was a bit farther than she expected. She must figure out how to reverse the spell, deal with falling in love all over again and fight against some of the most notorious Death Eaters, who are inside the castle's walls. Not as intruders, but as classmates.

50. Wizards Who Meddle

Despite the circumstances, Remus refused to go back to Hogwarts.  He had decided it would be too different, and there was no one holding him there.  Peter was taken back to Hogwarts, and was supposedly to be sent to Azkaban, life without trial, but Hermione still had not been able to leave yet.

She walked in silence, with Sirius' arm around her, and she thought about why she was still unable to go home.  Peter was captured, and there, as of now was no way he would be able to tell Voldemort about the Potter's whereabouts.  But... There was no way of knowing if the other Death Eaters would break him out, though it was doubtful, seeing as he was hardly an asset to them.  There was no way that Lily and James would even tell him about their future home, and if they told Sirius, he wouldn't be one to tell, which heightened her confusion.

"What are you thinking?" Sirius asked as he looked down at Hermione.

"I'm just... Wondering what happened to Peter..." She lied.

"Well... Frank said that he will be delivered straight to Azkaban.  Trial will be decided upon after.  You don't... You don't think he's going to be freed?"

"I don't what to think anymore Sirius...  I can't think at all anymore..." She said, her brain going fuzzy.  "Sirius, I only remember parts of my life.  I can't remember why I want to go back.  Only that I need to."

Sirius put his head down, hoping he wouldn't have to face the fact Hermione would have to go back eventually.

"Why were you sent here?" He asked.

"Rogue spell?  I think..." She replied, racking her brains.  "Sirius, how am I going to get back?" She said, worried.

"Why do you care?  Why does it matter?!" He asked, sounding a little hurt.

"Why do I care?!  Why does it matter?!" She said, equally as hurt, and slightly angered.  "Sirius!  That's my home!  My life!"

"What about your home here, Hermione?!  What about us?!"

"I'm not so sure anymore, Sirius.  Home sounds more appealing by the minute." She said, looking away from him.

"Hermione... Don't do this..."

"I... I don't want to fight anymore.  I know you don't want me to leave.  And I don't want to leave you.  But I have to go back."

"I wish I could say I understand."

"I wish I did understand." She responded lowly.  How would things be if I went back?  Sirius was already dead.  James and Lily dead.  Remus was the only one still there, would he remember all of this?  What would change?  She recalled her third year, and her encounter with changing time. "Sirius..." She said softly.

"Bad things happen to wizards who meddle with time.  You don't think... That's why I can't remember?  Do you?  What if something happens... And I can't go back... And I forget everything, or I fade?!" She said, her tone becoming more urgent every word.

"'Mione!  Calm down." He chuckled.  "Nothing bad is going to happen to you.  It's probably just because you haven't seen home in a while, you just don't remember things as well as you used to." He tried to reassure her.
