6. It's Okay

Upon their arrival at Hogwarts, the kids exited the train and began filing into the self-rowing boats that would take them across the lake, to the front steps of the castle.  The boys had spotted Remus and waved him over, causing him to leave the mousy Pettigrew boy that he was speaking to since there were only 4 to a boat.

"Wretched," James mumbled under his breath upon spotting that Severus was holding Lily's hand in a nearby boat.

When the boats docked, the students filed off and waited on the front steps until Professor McGonagall opened the doors that would lead them into the castle.

"We are ready for you now," she said, coolly.  As the students made their way through the door, jaws dropped and eyes widened as they were greeted with the mystic beauty of the Great Hall.  Although Hermione was hardly a new student, she always found herself mesmerized by the beautiful ceiling display.  When the first years made their way to the front of the large dining hall, Professor McGonagall cleared her throat and held out a scroll that contained the names of each first year to be sorted.

"Narcissa Black!" Professor McGonagall began, allowing her to take her seat on the stool before placing the Sorting Hat atop her head.  Slytherin, but what else was to be expected.  Of course, the friends believed that Sirius would follow the same fate, but the Sorting Hat gave him an unexpected response.

"Ah, another Black ... What to do with you ... A family of Slytherins, but a display of great courage.  Better be ... GRYFFINDOR!" the hat explained, causing an uproar at the Gryffindor table.  Sirius winked at his friends as he sauntered off to join his housemates at their table.  Several other students came after ... Dirk Cresswell, Bartemius Crouch Jr. ... until it was the turn of Lily Evans.  The mind of a Ravenclaw, but the heart of a Gryffindor, the latter won out.  James was ecstatic, but Severus could be seen looking down at the floor, accepting that his heart was not pure enough for Gryffindor House.  There was then of course Remus and Peter who both were sorted into Gryffindor, and they happily took their places at the table.  Then, the moment Hermione had been dreading, it was her turn.

"Hermione Potter," McGonagall read aloud.  Hermione nervously walked up to the chair, feeling very similar to how she did during her first walk toward this stool.  She replayed what Mummy Eu had said to her ... maybe she really could make a different decision, live a quiet existence in Ravenclaw, just as the Sorting Hat originally wanted her to.

"Wit beyond measure, but I sense that that is not the only value you have grown to cherish.  You have a wise soul.  It seems to have lived through a lot for your age," the hat mused.

"Not Gryffindor, not Gryffindor ..." Hermione begged silently.

"Perhaps I was wrong, you don't value bravery as much as I thought you did.  Friendship?" it further questioned.  That was the word that let an uncontrollable flood of memories back into Hermione's mind, exposed to the Sorting Hat.  "What's this I see?  Better be GRYFFINDOR!" it exclaimed.  The table once again roared, welcoming their new housemate.  James met the same fate, and took a place next to Lily at the table, oozing with excitement.  However, Hermione and Severus were anything but excited.

"It's okay," Lily mouthed to him as he sulked over to the Slytherin table.  'It's okay' Hermione thought, it's okay.
