42. Don't You See

It was Carressa's turn to cry. "Remus.  It was nothing.  He didn't have gloves on!  I was just warming his hands!  I was worried you wouldn't... I saw you with Hermione.  Sirius tried explaining to me why-". But Remus cut her off.

"Did you not have enough faith in me, to trust I would be faithful?"

"Remus." Whispered Hermione. "Don't make the same mistake I am about to.  I've lived two lives." She chucked a bit before returning to her seriousness. "I know what I'm saying.  Please.  She meant no harm in what she did.  She wasn't complimenting others at my expense."

"Remus.  I'm sorry!  I was just.... I..." Carressa was choking up.  Remus moved towards her and took her into a deep embrace.  "I didn't love myself enough to let you love me". She said with tears in her eyes.

"I'll always be here.  And I can love you enough for the both of us.  You can trust I will never leave you Carressa."  He hugged her, and reconciliation was underway.  Anything broken was fixed, and in that moment, their relationship had progressed farther than Hermione and Sirius' ever would.  Remus nodded in Hermione's direction, gave a polite smile, and started off, waiting for Carressa, who hugged Hermione, as if an apology for anything.  Neither looked at, or acknowledged Sirius before walking off in the opposite direction.  Away from the home, most likely off on a walk, a time to talk.

Dead silence.  The snow continued to fall, and the area was as silent as ever.  Picture perfect.  No fear of corruption or intrusion.  This snowflakes fell on Hermione's perfect eyelashes, and she blinked them away.  The snowy scene reminded her of her trip to Godric's Hollow with Harry on Christmas Eve.  This time, the memory came as a happy one.  As if she had locked the traumatizing part of that time away.

"I better go check on Lily and James." Said Hermione, as she began to walk away from Sirius.

"Hermione, please wait."  He said, riskily spinning her around by her shoulder.  He was unsure of whether or not he should go that far yet.

"Don't you see Sirius?  You didn't love me enough to let me love you."  She said, leaving him with that last thought.
