8. Telling Chase

Blue's POV

I was pacing in Chase's living room. I could hear what he was doing upstairs with Puppy, and I couldn't help thinking I wouldn't be doing that again for almost a year. Finally, after what seemed like hours Chase appeared. Justine was his sister for Goddess sake! What was he going to say? Justine was only seventeen...she had a career ahead of her a pup this early could ruin everything. She was the pack Princess...Chase was basically a King, he could have me beheaded! Oh shit what did I do? Justine, You did Justine. My wolf said. I groaned.

"Blue?" Chase asked. "Is Justine here too?"

"No, it's just me. I actually have something to tell you. I don't know how you'll take it."

"Just spit it out will you?" Chase said impatiently as he shrugged on a shirt.

"Justine is pregnant." I said quickly. Silence. Silence could mean one or two things. One, he was secretly happy and didn't or couldn't say anything because of said happiness. Two; he was contemplating my death in various gruesome, and more painful than last ways. My breathing became labored as I waited for his response. I could just see the black wolf erupting from his meat suit and devouring me.

"Well, you are her mate, and she is of Mating age so I can't really say anything but congratulations."

"Yes, now get out of here. I have an appointment with Houston. Poor guy."

"Thanks Chase, this will be a weight off of Justine's shoulders."

"She was worried?"

"Yea, she thought you'd be mad."

"Oh, well tell her I'm happy for her." I nodded, and indication that I would. He had just answered his phone; no doubt speaking with Houston. A series of rapid knocks sounded on the front door, I groaned as I went to answer the door. A frazzled looking girl stood on the front stoop. Her wide green eyes were wide with fright,

"Can I help you?"

"Are you Chase?"

"No, but this is his house. What do you need with Chase?" my wolf took over, protecting my Alpha.

"Houston Riley told me to come here, if I needed any of my questions answered."

"You're Houston's mate?"

"Yes--I guess I am. My name is Talia O'Hare."

"Come in." I led her into the living room, Chase looked about ready to ask who was at the door. When Talia entered right behind me. "Chase, this is Talia O'Hare, Houston's mate. She has some questions."

Chase indicated for her to sit on the couch. As she did, Puppy hopped down the stairs two at a time. Her hair was pulled back into a high ponytail, and she wore a sweatsuit. She saw me, and smiled.

"Blue! Congrats on the new cub!" Puppy then noticed Talia. "Hi, I'm Dustin Moore, but everyone calls me Puppy, and you are?"

"Talia O'Hare."

"Oh, I know're the new anchorwoman for channel nine! It's so good to meet you!"

"Oh yes that...I'm here to speak with Chase."

"About what?" Puppy's demeanor changed, from bubbly, to possessive.

"Houston Riley."

"What about Houston?" Puppy asked protectively.

"I'm; I just wanted to ask Chase a few questions."

"Oh, alright--well it was nice meeting you! Blue, let's go shopping!" Puppy dragged me away...against my will.

Talia's POV

Sitting across from Chase was nerve wracking enough, but his itty bitty mate and how possessive she was scared me more. How could someone so tiny, be so terrifying? I realized that Chase was waiting for me to say something. Anything I would say would be less awkward than just sitting here twiddling my thumbs like a moron.

"So um, how do mixed species"

"Oh--very well actually. Houston is a gentle giant, clumsy with words but he's a sweet man with a heart of gold. I'm glad to call him a friend. He would never hurt you. He actually teaches the pack cubs how to fight and shift."

"He sounds so sweet...but he found me when he was ah all wolfy."

"Ah, yes that could be terrifying. But you must know he would never ever think of hurting you. A mate relationships moves faster than I assume to what your used to. It's the love at first sight theory on steroids. We don't even have to see our mates to fall in love. We simply smell their smell and that's it...we're done. There's no fighting it really."

"I should find Houston. I wasn't overly cordial that last time we spoke, well rather I screamed, and he spoke."

"He'll be at his apartment across town. Here's the address." I looked at the slip of paper. My future written on the white in inky black words. A seal on my fate. 2245 Elkins Road Apartment 22B Fourth Floor

I nodded my goodbyes and went in search of Elkins Road. It was only a half block away. I found his apartment easily enough. Now all I had to do was knock...

Houston's POV

I could smell her. It was torture waiting for her to knock. I didn't want to freak her out even more than I had already. All I wanted to do was kiss her, and make her mine. She was mine--all she had to do was say the word and she would be mine and I would be her's forever no one else would ever come in between us. She would be protected. Loved. Heartache...I could smell it on her like a bad cheap perfume you would buy at the drugstore it clung to her, I wanted to make it go away. I wanted to replace that smell with mine. I wanted to replace the heartache with love.

Finally, a timid knock sounded on the door. I walked as slow as I could muster. It took all my willpower not to just pull the door from its frame and take her into my arms. Like a scene from an eccentric romance novel. I inhaled deeply and calmed my nerves and opened the door as I would for a friend, slow and gentle. She was beautiful. Her red curls fell onto her shoulders in cascading waves, and her emerald eyes twinkled with an unspoken apology. Her lips were plump and were pulled back into a smile, a shy smile, but it was a smile for him. She clutched a slip of scrap paper like it was her lifesaver and maybe it was.

"Hullo." she whispered in her slight accent. "I came to say I'm sorry."

"Hello again. Come in." I said as I held the door open wider, her slight frame pushed gently past. Her smell enveloped me. All my worries floated away as she sat neatly on one of my recliners.

"You don't need to apologize. I should apologize. I just didn't know you were human until it was too late."

"Its okay Houston, I shouldn't've screamed at you the way I did. Chase, he explained the process of finding your mate and how difficult it can be."

"I will take it as slow as you want. I will take you on as many dates as you want before I kiss you. I will ask if its okay to hold your hand. I will be the perfect boyfriend...I promise."

"I didn't come here for a boyfriend Houston. I came here for a mate. A permanent fixture in my life. I came here for you." Talia said, sliding closer to me. Her hands finding mine. She looked at me from beneath her lashes and smiled seductively.

"You'll be the death of me." I whispered as I kissed her. The kiss was slow at first, I blame it on her surprise, but once her initial surprise was over, she got into the kiss. It was like a rollercoaster of emotion for me. One part of me, wanted to take things slow, the other part wanted what she did, I wanted to claim her, make this permanent. I wanted my mate and that part would win.
