Don't Look For Me

Cayn gets overwhelmed with her life, her boyfriend doesn't seem right for her, and her family falling apart piece by piece. She runs away from home, only to meet up with a girl named Dee.

13. eggs and bacon

I woke up to the smell of bacon wafting through the house, and the muffled sizzle of eggs. I sat up in bed, listening to the simple sounds of Dee humming to herself as she cooked. I shook her blankets off, and stumbled into the kitchen.

"Oh!" Dee yelped, startled. Then, "Are you OK? Do you want to talk about it?"

I just shook my head, she wouldn't need to be bothered by my problems. I know she is dealing with problems of her own. Instead, I ate her breakfast as we sat at the table together. She tore open an official-looking envelope. I scooped up another chunk of eggs, savoring the taste. I can't remember the last time I had eaten an actual meal.

Suddenly, Dee gasped, and her expression became distraught as her eyes scanned the paper faster, tears brimming her eyes. "No. They can't do this to me. No. No. No."

"Dee?" I padded up behind her, but she had already put the paper down. She swiveled to face me. Her face was stone cold, but soaked with suppressed emotions. The life had gone from her face. By my side, my hand balled into a fist, clenching so hard that my nails cut into my skin. I swear. If those shitty homophobic parents of hers said something...

Dee's voice came out a little croaked and dusty. My hatred turned to despair as my hand flattened out.

"She's given them the OK to reconstruct this place. New owners have already bought the land."
