Diana Rose *complete*

He saved her but he doesn't remember.

16. My step-brother

I waited; eyes closed and trying to breath calmly. I waited a long time; each second going by was tenser than the one before. I waited but no sound came; no pain overran me. The only thing I heard was footsteps. But he didn't seem to get closer; I was waiting for Death but it didn't come.

Suddenly I felt someone falling close to me. I opened my eyes and saw my brother fighting with my step-brother on the floor: it seemed he was trying to take the gun out of his hands. I didn't move; I didn't know what to do. Why was my brother here?

There were on the ground; fighting in silence and no one dared to move; afraid of what could happen. After a while, my brother had the advantage; he succeed into taking him the gun and now was on top of our step-brother; an angry look on his face.

"You are a liar!" he yelled, boiling with anger. "You swore you wouldn't kill her; you said you wanted her to work with us!" The other one laughed.

"You're so naïve! I hate your family! How could you have thought I'd let you live?" he shouted back. My brother slapped him hard on the cheek.

"It is over; everything is over. You will end your life in jail and I'll be able to live a better life. I'll be able to erase everything I made for you." The mere thought of it lit up the face of my brother. hen, he turned toward me to carry on, "Diana, I hope you will forgive me. I didn't know anything; I was blind and stupid."

I moved closer toward him and he stood up. I held him in my arms and whispered, "Of course I forgive you! I've never blamed you. I have been afraid of you but I've also been waiting for this day for long years!"

All of the sudden, we heard a plonk and my brother fell on his knees; his eyes wide opened.

"Matt!" I yelled. I looked up and saw our step-brother holding another gun in his hand and smirking. Anger grew in me; how did he dare? I was about to move toward him but he suddenly collapse on the floor, unconscious. Behind him was standing Eleanor's boyfriend who had bashed him on the head with a rolling pin.

I knelt next to my brother who had lost lots of blood.

"Matt, don't leave me. You will heal; stay the course!" Some tears fell on his face as I wept above him.

"Everything is over. You are safe now, Diana," he said in a last whisper. His eyes shut and he lay lifeless in my arms; more and more of my tears flowing on his dead body.

I felt a hand on my shoulder and someone moved me away from my brother. I turned around and saw Eleanor; she opened her arms and I rested my head on her, crying.

He couldn't be dead.

Epilogue :

I left a rose on my brother's grave and stared at it a last time. The burial was over; everyone had left. I had been so thrilled to see him again but my happiness hadn't lasted. I would never see him again. I lost my brother forever; but I know he now is happier than ever up there.

I slowly walked out of the cemetery and found Liam waiting for me near the entrance. He held his hand out, a weak smile on his face. I held it tightly and squeezed it gently.

Now that everything is back to normal, I am about to start a new life. I am free now and I have Liam by my side; I know I can rely on him. I can trust someone again.
