20. Chapter 19

It's my turn to take watch, since Eris had been on watch for most of the day. The air around me seems to hold it's breath as if it knows it will all be over too soon. But, I don't want it to be over because this either ends with my death or I have to walk out of here alone knowing what I did. I've already killed four people and if I'm to win then I'll have to kill at least one more, I don't dare to think who that person might be. By mid day everyone has gotten their fill of sleep and we make plans.

"There are six of us left," Eris points out, "We know that Zale and Terra are still together, so that leaves us three and then the boy from 11."

I nod, "The boy from 11, Crant, is acting alone, but he's survived this long so he must be pretty crafty. We also don't know if he's managed to kill anybody."

"Terra and Zale will want to hunt, but they know they can't attack us yet, so they'll be looking for Crant or they may be hoping he takes one or more of us out," Ronan adds.

"That's a good point, but we also have to worry about resources," I point out.

"Resources are definetley a problem and so are the other tributes, so why don't we have one person hunt, one person get water, and another do a bit of scouting," Eris says.

I frown, "We shouldn't seperate."

Ronan agrees, "We'll have to stay within ear shot."

"Fine," I sigh.

"Ok, I'll scout along the canyon. Avea, you get water and Ronan, you can hunt," Eris decides.

I take our five water bottles down to the river to fill them up. It saddens me to think there used to be enough of us, so that there would only be one water bottle per person. The water trickles into the bottles slowly and I fear one of those mutt snakes will bite me if I stay to long. I pull my hand out of the river as soon as the bottles are filled and wipe it on my jacket to dry it off. The way back to camp is pretty short so I decide to do some scouting of my own.

The forest is dead silent as if it too can feel the end drawing near. The shadows seem too dark like ink staining the lush forest, the sky is filled with gray clouds as if it were going to cry, and even the bird sing a sadder song that belongs at a funeral. The loss of life is almost tangible in the air.

My scouting is pointless because I find nothing in the ink stain shadows and no noise interrupts the bird's sad song. It's not until I'm almost at camp that I hear the voices, a male and female, at first I think it's Ronan and Eris, but then I hear a second female voice and no something's wrong. The voices come from the direction of the canyon and I hurry to th edge. This canyon is becoming an omen, it seems the most death has happened here.

I force my way through a curtain of pine needles to find a scene of horror unfolding before me. Terra and Zale have Eris surrounded and her sword lays at the edge of the cliff a good twenty feet away from her. Terra and Zale see me and it's clear they were hoping no one else would show.

"Lion, it looks like you chose the wrong side," Zale smirks.

"I don't think I did. Three of us versus two of you," I smirk back.

Zale glares at me, "9 isn't here, so I guess that means I'll get to kill."

"That won't happen," I tell him and scream Ronan's name as loud as I can hoping that he'll come.

Zale looks to see if he's coming, but Terra doesn't bother to check. She slings her bow over her shoulder and pulls out a spear. She runs a me before I can pull out a weapon and I expect the spear to meet my heart, but the lethal blow doesn't come. Instead Eris tackles her to the ground. Terra hits the ground with a thump, but pushes Eris off her. The two turtle on the ground and I want to help, butI have to deal with Zale. I hear someone running through the woods in the distance, I'm assuming it's Ronan, but Eris or I could easily be dead by the time he gets here.

I pull two tomahawks out of my built and run at Zale, he's ready and blocks my strike with his sword; the contact of the weapons sends a jolt up my arm. Zale's sword requires two hands so I attempt to swing at his stomach. He sees this coming, so he pulls his sword back and slams his elbow into the arm going for his stomach while at the same time the loss of contact with the sword causes me to stumble forward. A sharp elbow hits my spin and I fall towards the ground rolling at the last second and landing on my feet.

Terra and Eris are still rolling on the ground but they are dangerously close to the cliff. Ronan's footsteps are closer but he still isn't here yet. I wait for Zale to make the next move and he's about to when the girls get to their feet. Zale and I both somehow sense that something is about to happen and turn towards the fight. Terra is struggling to stand up while Eris stands over her.

"This is for Harrison!" Eris screams and her foot makes contact with the Career's chest.

Terra's eyes are wide in surprise as she falls over the edge. Her arms flail wildly for something to grab onto. Eris stands at the edge of the cliff to watch her fall, but Terra's flailing arms find her leg and she's jerked towards the edge. I run to her as she falls on to her back, Terra's weight pulling her down. My fingers brush hers at the same time Ronan comes crashing through the woods. He's arrived just in time to see Eris fall to her death.

The two bodies bodies fall through empty air, uninterrupted. The wind catches at their clothes and it looks almost graceful until their bodies hit the ground. At the bottom of the canyon lay two broken china dolls, they've shattered and they can no longer be put back together. They look like on the outside what I feel like on the inside.

I'm accutley aware of Zale's presence as canons fire and turn to face him. I'll make him pay for Eris' death. Zale realizes that he can't take both of us and runs like a bat out of hell. The hovercarfts rustles the forest as I run after Zale. I chase him until I can't see him and even then I keep running.
