"The true mystery of the world is the visible, not the invisible."
- Oscar Wilde

I should have known today would be the worst. I didn't comply, and now I will pay instead. Num lifts the hammer and holds it against my pounding skull.

I see flashes of blood coursing through veins.

Veins bursting.

Another person in agony, screaming, dying to go to hell-knows-where because I can't do it.

Num stops speaking, but the visions don't end. Reality stops for no one. The woman is on the floor, bleeding out in all manner of places, staining the nurse's pure white uniform stark red liquid on a white linoleum floor. They've been doing this all the time I've been here - killing, maiming, torturing everyone I've ever seen. It's as if they can sift through the dredges of my brain, pick out every living being I have ever come into contact with, and single-handedly seek, find, and slaughter each and every one. In effect, that is probably exactly what they are doing.
