Safe and Sound

A cruise to New Zealand for school! Could life get any better for the adventurous teen Tess?!

A 2 day cruise on the Pacific Pearl with the rest of the year 9's in her school was going to be a blast! So much to do and see, Tess and her friends couldn't wait!

But disaster strikes on the first night of the cruise, an unexpected storm creates massive waves which eventually causes the ship to capsize. Most of the passengers on the boat are flung into the raging water, including Tess.

Tess awakens on the sandy shore of an island, exhausted she lays there half dead, shivering.

What feels like a blanket is suddenly layed across her, she forces her eyes open and looks up. A boy, not too much older than her looks down at she dreaming?! "The name's Jackson," he says, eyes as blue as the ocean on a perfect sunny day. "but you can call me Jack if you like."

7. Dean

As I finally reach Jack and this "Dean" thing, I realize that Dean is in fact a turtle.
Yes, a TURTLE. A big turtle! Probably a meter from head to tail, with a big brown shell that glistened in the sunlight.

"Tess, this is my friend Dean. Dean, this is Tess." Jack says, stepping back so I can get a better look at the massive turtle.

"Uhh...Hi Dean," I mumble, not sure if Jack actually expected me to talk to a turtle.

"You should have seen her Dean!" Jack says laughing. "There I am, walking along the beach looking for driftwood, and there's this girl lying there in the sand, completely drenched and half dead. What was I going to do? Leave her there? I think not! I like to think I am a gentleman." Jack begins to wander up the beach again, leaving me to stand there in astonishment as the turtle actually slides itself along beside him, as if a human and a turtle can really be best friends, and that a turtle and a human can have a conversation! I really can't help but smile at the sight, either Jack is totally crazy, or I have a lot to learn about this randomly perfect place.

After explaining how he found me and why I am here right now, Jack stops and so does Dean. "Come on Tess! The tour hasn't finished yet." Jack yells out, beckoning me up the beach in an exaggerated arm gesture. I grin and catch up, and Jack shows me heaps more of the island, me walking on one side of him, Dean on the other.

The afternoon soon becomes the evening, which even sooner becomes the night. Jack, Dean and I head back to a part of the beach that is close to Jacks house, there we work together to build a small fire out of the driftwood Jack and I collected earlier in the day

The island is beautiful, it makes me forget about how I lived and who I was before I literally washed up here! It is like i'm living in a completely different life. Like I don't even have a past to remember, like before Jack, before this island, I was a no one, a nothing. Just another sheep in the herd, doing what everyone else was doing, living as a copy of another. With hardly anything to define who I really was.

The more I try to remember, the more I realize I was alive, but I wasn't really living.

Now I'm here, walking beside Jack, and learning how extremely individual he is, is what defines him.

I now see, as I compare us mentally in my mind. I'm a sheep, another no name in the herd. While Jack is the shepard, so full of individuality and with such charisma, it sends a warm rush through me every time I watch and learn from him.

So there you have it, Dean is a turtle! Is that a let down or a nice twist? (:

Thanks for reading (:

xx Jess
