Melody: A One Direction Fanfiction (Sequel to Gwen)

I am Melody Malik, and someone is after my family. I don't know who, but they're targeting us all.

13. Up and Down

"I am going to find out who is behind these shootings, and I am going to serve them justice!"

The other members of One Direction and their wives had arrived.

There was Uncle Louis Tomlinson, happily married to Eleanor Calder-Tomlinson, with a thirteen-year-old daughter named Georgia Rose. Uncle Liam Payne was single, with an adopted son named Bruce, same age as me. Uncle Harry Styles was married to a young actress named Kaia Reviledge, and they had a daughter named Darcy, five months old. Uncle Niall Horan was married to Grace Horan, and they had a son the same age as me named Jeffrey.

It was Uncle Liam who had spoken. He was a fan of Batman, and through research through countless American tabloids I had learned that there was a rumor when Mum first started hanging out with 1D that she and Liam had hooked up over their shared obsession. However, close friends of Mum and Dad had always denied these rumors, telling us that it was always obvious my parents would get together  . . . it just took them a while.

"Liam, calm down." Uncle Louis demanded.

"No! I won't calm down! Why should I calm down? One of my best friends' wife, their daughter, and my goddaughter's husband have all been either shot or blown up, and Melody's in a coma!"

"It's not a coma." Mum's voice was weak and tired, but had a certain confidence and strength to it.

"Then what is it?" Liam was in a rage. This wasn't a common thing for him.

"She's sleeping, because she has the choice to. She can hear every word, she could probably respond... she just thinks she's in a coma. It's a way to escape the pain in her shoulder."

"What are you, a nurse?"

"Actually, yes. I graduated nursing school before I became a journalist. This is somewhat common lately, for victims of shooting or trauma of all kinds."

"Then why doesn't she wake up?" Jeffrey. It was rare to hear his voice sound like this, since he was often the jokester of the One Direction kids.

"Maybe she doesn't know she can. Maybe she doesn't want to. Maybe she's just tired."

"If she can hear us, then shouldn't she know by now?"

I knew. I'd known since three days earlier that I could wake up at any given time. I knew that if I ran far enough then I'd find the real world. But, in all honesty, I was tired, and I knew that my shoulder would almost definitely hurt when I woke up.

"She can't sleep forever." Georgia.

Of course I couldn't, that would mean every day taking another step towards getting taken off life support. But . . . the sleep felt so nice . . . so . . . effortless . . .

"She could, but she shouldn't. The sleep is addicting. The longer she stays, the more likely she is to slip back into it when she rests."

This stunned and frightened me, and I began to run. As I ran, I could hear the voices with their echoing quality.

I heard a door open and close.

"We've found the leader of the gang. He's in custody and we're waiting for him to tell his men to stop trying to kill us."

Dad's announcement made me so happy that I was able to keep running.

My eyes flew open. "YES!" I shouted triumphantly.
