Melody: A One Direction Fanfiction (Sequel to Gwen)

I am Melody Malik, and someone is after my family. I don't know who, but they're targeting us all.

12. Gloom and Doom

The voice sounded like it was coming from far away. So far away.

"Melody? Wake up, Melody..."

I didn't recognize the voice, but something in my subconscious told me they were important.

"Melody Elizabeth Malik, you wake up now."

Was that... Mum's voice? But... Mum was in the hospital... the obviously fake accent... it had to be...

I struggled. It felt like something was sitting on my chest. I needed to answer her. She was hurt, shot right near the heart, and the healthy kid needs to wake up and answer her.

I used up all my strength, and finally touched the surface.

My eyes fluttered open, and I looked around the room. Surrounding my bed were Gwen, Oceana, Robin, Dad... next to me on the other cot was Mum...

I was dragged back down again into unconsciousness.

Finally, I took a look at my surroundings.

Surrounding me was a whole lot of nothing. Just empty, white space. Except for a small, black pool of smoke-looking substance creeping up and consuming the white floor.

I wandered over to it. What was this? I stuck my finger into it.

It didn't feel unpleasant. Somewhat like water. It was very warm, and somewhat welcoming.

I began to wade in. As soon as my knees touched the liquid/smoke, it surrounded me.

It felt great. I didn't have to breathe. I didn't have to support my weight. I didn't really have to do anything. A tiny light appeared in the blackness, and voices poured out of it, calling my name, singing hymns from church, laughing... I began to move towards it.

Then, another voice.

"Melody! Melody, don't you dare leave us, Melody!" it was Dad's voice.

"I'm not going anywhere!" I tried to call back, but nothing came out.

Robin's voice. "Mellsies, I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry, please don't go, please wake up!"

Oceana's. "Listen up, sister, we're twins, we need to stick together, so you..." she choked over her tears. "You wake up!"

Gwen's. "Don't leave us. Not like this. We love you. Wake up."

I began to run through the blackness in the direction I thought would take me back to the white space. I needed to answer. But it was so, so hard. So hard to move away from the light. It was like gravity was pulling me towards it.

Finally, Mum's. "Listen up, sweetheart, I took way worse a shot than you and I'll be up and moving tomorrow. If I didn't die, you're not allowed to. Wake up, baby." She'd ditched her fake accent and was speaking in her natural American accent.

The sound of her voice, a sound I had missed so much for over a week, gave me the strength I needed to return to the white space.

I ran further, away from the blackness, until I reached a point where I could see nothing but white. "I . . . did . . . it . . ." I panted, hoping they could hear me, and collapsed on the ground.
