9. All's Fair in Love and War

"Did you hear that?"

I looked at Oceana, startled. "Hear what?"

"Nothing, I'm sure it's nothing." she looked back to her book.

It was past midnight, and Cedar, Michigan got very spooky at night . . . especially in the old house Mum inherited that used to belong to her parents. They'd died in a car accident before we were born, and sometimes it felt like we were being watched.

"Seriously, Oceana, what did you hear?"

"Nothing. Just a little thud outside. Dropping rock or something."

Suddenly, I heard two men whisper-shouting just out the open window.

"Shh." I demanded, looking out the window silently.

Oceana, engrossed in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, seemed not to hear me, butthe minuscule nod she gave me did not go unnoticed.

"What're we gonna do? We gotta assassinate the whole family or no pay! The whole family!" this man had a high-pitched voice and spoke in a thick New York accent.

"I dunno, Rocko, I like those kids. They're nice." Rocko had a comically deep voice reminiscent of Big the Cat.

"Shut up, Lloyd! You screwed up killing the wife, you ain't gonna screw up killing the twins either!"

I heard a smacking noise, and Lloyd said "Ouch!"

"Erica Bones Malik killed the boss, her family's gotta pay. After sixteen years we's finally getting revenge. Don't ya want to avenge the boss?"

"O' course I do, Rocko! But is killing the kids really da right answer? Can't we just kill her instead?"

"That was the original plan, wingnut, but you missed her heart!"

"I didn't mean to!"

I'd heard enough. I closed the window and drew the shades, grabbing Oceana's hand. "We're staying with Dad or Gwen tonight. They're going to try to shoot us."

"But that isn't fair!"

"All's fair in love and war, Oceana."
