Movella Reviews

Hello everybody! This is a completely unoriginal idea but here I am, starting a movella review report. I can't review anything marked as red (not old enough) but I can read over anything marked green or yellow. I would prefer not to have fan-fics about 1D or Justin Bieber, but if it absolutely desperate, I would be more than happy to review it. Just leave the name of your book in the comments below and I will review them ASAP. :)

24. Hating the Band- Dem1

Okay, everybody stop what you're doing and go read this book. It is officially my new go-to stress-reliever, comedy break and smiley corner because Hating the Band by Dem1 practically had me crying. To be honest, I can't say I'm a huge fan of 1 Direction. Sure, I appreciate their hard efforts in their careers and all but I'm just not a die hard fan of their music. And, just for the record, I totally agree with Dem about the Beatles them using REAL musical instruments and REAL talent (that music production just does't happen as much these days). Anyways, to stop my little tangent, let's start talking about the rolling-on-the-floor writing here.

The start was great. It got straight into the story and instantly made me curious and interested to find out more. What us young authors have to remember about writing a story is not to really write a 'beginning,' per say, but to just get straight into the story or else the reader will instantly get bored. Dem does this perfectly and starts describing one of those very comical, stereo-typical 1D fans (I have nothing personal against them at all, by the way) hanging up fan merchandise in her room. I love the description of grabbing the "floral tape" and finding the most "perfect place for her prized poster." This little feed of description just instantly paints a picture of the perfect, crazed fan in my head who loved colors, flowers, shopping and guys. I can also just imagine Tina (character's name) scoping out and squinting at her wall to find the most tip-top location to put yet another poster. Finally, I love the second sentence because even though this is supposed to be an almost parody-like story, Dem hasn't forgotten important writing features like alliteration and some might think that the idea of writing grammatically correct and using different language features is silly, but seriously guys, applying the basic techniques does make your writing miles better, so well done on that front, Dem!

Then, later on, we get introduced to another female character. The two girls are in a shop looking for toiletries and I love how Dem makes one of these girls exceedingly stupid without actually pointing it out in a description because that just makes it all the more funny. For example, when she's checking out, she goes "Umm, could I get a lower price maybe?" This. Is. Totally. Awesome. Writing. I mean, I can just imagine this scene with perfect clarity and the expression on the clerks face when she says this.... dear lord, doesn't the image just want to make you laugh?!

Moving on to more funny stuff (I love funny stuff- did I mention that?) The way the boys are presented in this story is perfect. You know how they are shown? Like the normal, teenage guys they are. Not super hero dudes that sweep any random girl off their feet. Nice fantasy, but unfortunately not realistic.... Anyways, I love this quote "Look, mate. What I'm trying to say is that if you tell your fans that you like carrots, then you're going to get a hell lot of carrots." Why I love this so much is I can imagine 1D sitting around having this discussion in real life while all other fan fictions make this little fact a huge deal, like carrots are Louis's lifeline. I adore this different perspective thing.

Next, the way the chapters are named is so smart. It's all the song names but with a little tag sentence at the end, for example 'One Way or Another (I'm going to stalk you) I found this very witty and it made the chapters just even more engaging to dig into. Chapter names do count, I need to remember that. Anyways, though, the story progresses (not going to give too much away) but soon enough, two girls are fighting over how many posters someone had, the boys over hear the conversations and then wham! My favorite part comes up. "I'm not going to date you. That would be gross, you girls look twelve. I would probably be arrested for pedophiling." The truth has come out. Thank the good lord someone has some sense on this planet that the chances of a twelve year old girl hooking up with a twenty year old guy is pretty slim.

Read this novella, everybody, fans and non-fans of 1D alike because Dem1 has comedy writing skills. You're still here, aren't you? I told you to go read 'Hating the Band!' it's a masterpiece, seriously, go!
