19. Awake

“Harry!” Liz alerted me in a loud whisper. She nudged me with her shoulder. I sat up and yawned, realizing I passed out. I looked across the room at the clock hanging on one of the bare walls. 10pm. A few hours ago, the doctor had come to tell us Tyler was going to be stabilized, but was going to be sleeping for a while. She had anemia, which was caused by her iron deficiency.

I felt another nudge from Liz and turned to see a nurse standing in front of us. She had long blonde hair, tied in a messy bun over her shoulder. Her face looked strained and tired, and despite the slight wrinkles over forehead, she couldn’t be over 30. She was still young.

“She’s awake, you can see her now,” She informed us, “but one at a time please.”

I stood up and looked back at liz, “Is it ok if I-

“Yes, Harry!” Liz giggled, “Of course, just go!”

I smiled back at her and followed the nurse. As I left, I caught Niall’s eyes, accidentally. He smiled at me, hoping I would return the favor. However, I dropped my eyes, causing him to drop his smile.

I followed the nurse down a long hallway of empty halls. When we finally approached Tyler’s room, I hesitated before going in. When I walked through the door, my eyes landed on Tyler. She had pillows stuffed behind her back to help her sit up. Her light brown hair fell and draped over her shoulders, and actually looked comfortable. Something I hadn’t seen in weeks. I lightly knocked on the door frame and she turned her attention to me. Her eyes got wide and her smile grew.

“Harry!” She shouted excitedly. I walked over and hugged her tight.

“What the hell, Tyler?” I asked her, pulling away, “Why didn’t you let us know how bad the headaches were?”

“I thought they’d go away.” She answered with a naive tone. I rolled my eyes, and sat in the chair next to her bed.

“Your mum is driving up,” I told her, “She should be here any minute, actually.”

“Uhg, I bet she’s freaking out!” She whined, throwing her head, against the pillow.

“She wasn’t exactly calm.” I joked. She giggled, and put her hands up to her throat, rubbing her neck.

“Are you thirsty?” I asked her. She nodded back.

“Alright, I’ll go get you something, and I’ll send Liz in.” I told her getting up.

“Liz is here?” She said in disbelief, “It’s so late though!”

“Well, she stayed with me the whole time!” I smiled. I didn’t add that Niall did too. I hoped he had just gone back to the hotel.

“Thanks Harry.” She smiled at me. I nodded and went out of her room, shutting the door behind me. I walked through the hallway and into the waiting room. I strolled right past Niall and straight to Liz.

“Your turn.” I told her. She nodded back to me and I walked down to a vending machine.

I took out a dollar bill and two quarters. I inserted them into the machine and searched through the sodas. I found the one she liked and pressed “G3”. The soda came rolling out on the bottom. I picked it up and walked back through the waiting room, but stopped when I saw Liz was still there,

And Niall wasn’t.

“Why aren’t you with Tyler?” I questioned, getting angry.

“Niall, wanted to see her,” Liz said innocently, “So I told him to go.”

“Why would you do that?” I almost yelled, furious at why she would support this.

“Believe it or not but he really does care about her!” She told me, standing up, “I know you don’t like it, and I know it feels like he’s taking her away from you. But you need to ease up!” I was silent. Liz had never talked to me like that before, I was shocked. She sighed and walked over to where I was standing, “Harry, you know, he’ll treat her right. You know that he will be so good to her, and you know that he will share her. She’s not going to be taken away from you. So what’s the problem?” I thought about her words, and walked right past her. I walked down the long hallway to the room Tyler was in and looked through the window.

Tyler was laughing at something Niall had just said. She had her hand in his and wasn’t letting go anytime soon. Niall kept his gaze on her. He removed a strand of hair out of her face and tucked it behind her ear. She blushed and made some ridiculous comment about her hair always being in her face. Which cause the both of them to giggle. I took a deep breath, and walked into the room. Niall and Tyler both turned to the door frame immediately.

“Oh thank you, Harry!” She smiled at me, reaching for the soda. I handed it to her and watched as she let go of Niall’s hand and opened the bottle. She drank almost half of it before setting it to the side of her.

“Thirsty?” Niall joked. Tyler rolled her eyes and looked back at me.

“Harry, it’s still game night, right?” She asked me.

“Uh ,yeah, i guess.” I answered scratching my head. That wasn’t exactly on my “to-do” list now.

“Well, I wanna play tonight!” She grinned.

“Actually, visiting hours are going to be up soon, and then your mum is going to come so, I don’t think we’ll have time. Sorry.” I apologized. Her grin faded, but was replaced with a hopeful expression.

“Tomorrow?” She begged.

“Tomorrow.” I agreed. And then there was silence. It was a bit awkward, but I don’t think Tyler noticed. She had taken her phone from the side table and was texting. It was just Niall and I. Niall, sensing the awkward tension, stood up to leave, but I stood up as well.

“Ty, I gotta go.” I told her, looking straight at Niall. Niall looked at me confused.

“Really?” Tyler whined.

“Yeah, but Niall can stay with you until your mum comes. Right, Niall?” I asked him. He was taken by surprise.

“Uh, yeah. Of course.” He nodded. I smiled at him, and he smiled back.

I went to give Tyler a hug goodbye, and nodded to Niall. I turned and walked out of the room. I walked back through the hallway and into the waiting room. There sat LIz and Marcie, Tyler’s mother.

“How is she?” Marcie frantically asked me.

“She’s fine,” I confirmed, “She’s getting some vitamins later tonight to help with her iron levels. She’s been resting for a while.”

“I can see her, right?” She asked me, slightly more calm.

“Yeah,” I nodded, stepping out of the way. She walked past me and turned the corner into the hallway.

“Come on, Liz,” I turned to her, “Visiting hours are going to be over soon. I’ll come with you to see her tomorrow.” She nodded and stood up.

“I actually called a cab a while ago,” She informed me. I nodded in reply, and we made our way to the front.

“I thought about what you said,” I told her. She turned to me, waiting for me to go on, “I saw Tyler and Niall, and -

“She was happy?” Liz interrupted.

“Yeah,” I nodded, “And it’s been a long while since I’ve seen her that cheery.” I took a deep breath, “I know Niall is perfect for her. In fact, I wasn’t surprised they got along so quickly. And you were right,” I admitted, “I need to stop being so rude, and not have a bad attitude about it. And, I’m sorry.”

Liz smiled at me, and rubbed my back. We walked outside and got into the cab, and we left.

I was telling the truth. I needed to let it go. No one was taking her away from me. I just needed to share.
