11. TAXI

Ezra was starting to wonder if he could afford the double bill. The taxi was taking longer than he thought; what if she turned up before him and saw he wasn’t there? Would she stay for a while, dressed in a white dress so different from Henna and saris? The driver sped up, and his little black taxi’s glossy exterior was lit up by the lights.

The sun was setting, and the night world was no longer lit up by moon but by artificial constellations of LEDs. He thought it was romantic, before the sick sensation fought back. In a swift gesture he forced the ring onto the right finger, and noticed with a smile how little it felt like a chain, and more like a bond.
