Take care

(Starts in 2009, before XFactor. Harry was just a normal teen from Cheschire with big dreams)

Harry and Valerie had always been best friends. From their birth to their teenage years, everything was fine. A few mistakes changed the whole thing, but their relationship always stayed strong.

Sometimes, saying nothing says it all...

«You've seen all my mistakes...»

Maybe they were ''too close'' to be bf/gf but what happens when life gives you no other choice? And what happens when fame takes away the person you need the most?

Some people change, and some just won't.

I might not learn you anything new today but I have to say things and people change throughout their life. Personally, I have experienced that a lot during the past years. The thing is, I never expected that many things to change, and to what level. I’m not talking maturity and appearance changes, that’s quite normal, but I’m talking personality and places in time. What are we suppose to do when a simple friendship leads to a big mistake and makes you realize things are never gonna be the same again? You tell me, because I have no idea how I’ve made my way through this time of my life. Anyway, here’s my story…

In my oldest memories, Harry and I have always been friends. He was my neighbour which made it easier for our friendship to grow strong. I remember being so happy to wake up every summer morning because I knew I was going to see my best friend with who I had a blast every day. I remember seeing his green eyes lighting up whenever I had a new game idea, what happened quite often, and his smile slowly forming dimples on the sides of his lips. We used to play all day together, sometimes our friends Jess and Jonathan would come with us, but it wasn’t the same when they were there. His mother was also a role model to me. My parents liked to go on vacation and discover new places. Obviously, I couldn’t go. I couldn’t miss any day of school. I just couldn’t. So I stayed home, or should I say I stayed at Harry’s place. No wonder why our friendship was so strong.

As we became teenagers, our relationship grew a little different. It had become more of a love/hate thing. It seemed like meeting other people got us apart. It wasn’t as easy to be just the two of us, people were always around and we learned to be with others. When we were around our other friends, our relationship wasn’t the same. We barely talked. Therefore, we had so much to say when we were alone. I remember once we did not stop talking for like three hours. We did nothing else, just talk.

- So I heard someone likes you.
- Funny thing you skip from a subject to another, Harry. You just said you love the new record your mom bought you, and now you’re interested in who likes me.
- But I have so many things to tell you I don’t have time to spend too much on one subject, he said laughing.

That made me laugh too, but I felt the need to add something:
- Then why don’t you say these things to me when other people are around?
- You know we’re not little kids anymore…

His smile faded away. I knew from that moment that our kind of relationship was going to be a touchy subject. It felt like he wasn’t too much into the boy and girl friendship showing in public. I have to say we were at a certain age where boys are known to be disgusted by girls and do not want them as close friends. As much as it hurted me I decided to let it go. I knew in a few years everything was going to be back to normal. He just needed to grow up mentally.

One day, when we were just about 14, Harry told me he needed to sing. I didn’t get what he was talking about, so I didn’t say anything. He was a bit offended, then he said it was his biggest dream: singing. I was confused because he never said anything to me the way he did that night. Plus I had no idea he could do that. Of course we sang when we were younger, some little kids songs. That night, he sang to me with all his heart. His song choices were not the best I have to say but anyway I was blown away by his talent. Really, I never thought he was that good at something. And he looked like it was the way for him to release everything he felt inside. Things he wouldn’t say to anyone, not even me.

- Oh Harry… I never knew you were that good.
- You think so? Thank you little girl. I’m not quite sure if I really am talented but one thing’s for sure: it feels so damn good to sing my lungs out.
- I can’t doubt that
- What do you mean?
- It shows in your eyes

He looked amazed by my comment.

Harry’s POV

I had just revealed my secret to my best friend in the whole world and she said exactly what I needed to hear. I felt so relieved because I thought she’d laugh at me or think it was just another hobby. I was not the best at singing yet but now that I had support from one important person, nothing could stop me. It wasn’t gonna be easy but someday the world was going to know who Harry Styles from Cheshire is. I was willing to do anything. First, I had to make plans.

That night, I stayed wide awake just thinking about what I could do to make my singing skills show. I decided I was going to talk to my mom about it. The next morning when I woke up, I found her sipping her tea on the balcony with our cat. That was her typical morning. I sat next to her, smiling.

- Good morning beautiful! She said.
- Hi mom! You look peaceful today.
- Oh Harry, what is it that you wanna ask me? You wouldn’t make me such compliment on a saturday when just woke up for nothing. Go ahead, ask.
- Well you know… I’m pretty sure I can sing right and even Valerie said I was good at it and I know you don’t know or I don’t think you know that I like to sing because I’m not sure you heard me in the shower or anything but you know that show we watch on weekdays it’s called Xfactor you know it’s the thing Leona Lewis won and she became so big afterwards and I just thought maybe I could register and with chance I’ll be taken and then maybe I’ll make it to the live shows and then if I’m good enough maybe I WILL WIN mom!!!!!

I had never speak so fast in my life. My mom looked surprised and… annoyed.

- Wohh wohh wohh.. Relax little boy. I have no doubt you’re the best at what you like but I have to tell you no
- Wait what? Not even a ‘‘I’ll think about it” ? But why? I’ll do anything you ask me.
- Harry you’re too young, I mean you’re only 14 and you have way many other things to try in your life. I don’t mean to break your dreams but what are the chances? And would you imagine yourself singing in front of thousands of people? You never did this before… You should at least try this a bit.
- You can’t understand mom… Thanks for trying

And I walked away, frustrated. Yesterday, that idea seemed so bright as if she was going to say yes right away. I felt the need to go so I went to take a little walk to get fresh air. As soon as I past by Val’s house, she ran outside with her usual smile stuck on her face. But it faded away when she saw the look I had on mine. I told her the little chat I had with my mom and she barely was on my side.

- Your mom’s kinda right… You’ve never done anything like this before, Harry.
- Well I thought… maybe it comes easily with talent ha
- You should experience it before you put yourself out there
- Where do you want me to try this??? It’s not like trying out new food, come on Val! This is the chance of my life! I said angrily.
- Maybe you should go on stage at little school’s gig… Or just stand up in music classes to show what you can do
- But those are not the people I want to show my talent to… I wanna show it the world
- Oh excuse us for being a little town, mister rockstar

And she got back to her house. At this very moment in time, I hated her because I knew she was right. What was I thinking… I know nothing about singing.
Just when I was about to hit my head against a tree in discouragement, I saw this guy Haydn walking around with his guitar. He was a pretty sweet guy, kind of ‘in the dark’ but I didn’t know him too well.

- Hey Haydn! Where are you going with that old guitar?
- Oh hey Harry… I’m going to meet with the boys… We have a little jam session over at Will’s place.
- Really? I heard he plays the drum
- Yes, actually we formed a band along with Nick… I didn’t know you were interested in music
- For sure I am! But I don’t play any instrument other than the boring school’s xylophone

Haydn laughed. I never paid much attention to him but now I knew him and I could become great friends.

- Well you can come with me and I’ll show you the basic notes on the guitar… If you want to

- Of course! That would be so nice. Wait here, I’ll be back in a minute!
