1. Prologue

More than a million years ago, when only Pestrites used to rule this world, everything was in harmony. Similar to humans, each of these creatures was given a unique power to enslave within themselves. With them in power the people never quarrelled, and everyone and everything was in peace with each other. This was, until the Evil One came about and destroyed all Pestrites and all happiness. Wars started and arguments arose within the different species that god created. But, not all the Pestrites were killed. In fact, deep in the underground, a small sack filled with six baby Pestrites had been abandoned and left behind. These Pestrites grew into marvellous creatures and vowed that one day, the world would be back to normal, and the evil one would be destroyed.

The tingling in my body was getting worse. My fingers felt numb and my body was weak. I didn’t know where I was, let alone who I was. The effort to open my eyes was like lifting sandbags. My vision was blurry and my eyes were dry. I slowly sat up and looked around what looked like a small and comfortable room. It was lit by lavender scented candles. The smell was so calming that I forgot about my worries and drifted off into a peaceful sleep.

I was awoken by the soft splashing of water. I turned to my right. A tall man was pouring me a glass of water. As soon as he stopped, I grabbed the glass of water and thirstily gulped it all down. The water tasted fresh and delicious and I hungered for more. The mysterious man had sat down on a velvet chair near the bed I was resting on. I studied him; he had black wavy hair and his deep blue eyes looked the colour of the sea. He looked like he was in his 30’s. It seemed he was studying me too. Finally, he spoke.

“Do you remember anything?” he asked calmly. I shook my head. It was true. I hadn’t remembered anything. Nothing.

“No wait, Sid. I remember Sid.” I answered.

“Sid was your stepbrother. He was older then you by about 3 years. He is the son of Mr Tony Hasby,” he paused, “do you remember anything else?” Cool. I had a stepbrother. Did I also have a pet giraffe? A question suddenly raced into my head. I took another sip of the refilled glass of water.

“Who are you?” I asked.

The man looked at me, “you don’t remember.”

“Well I wouldn’t be asking If I did, would I?” I said rudely.

He lifted his eyebrow and spoke once again. “Velocity, I am Artemis, god of wisdom and strength,” he hesitated as if considering saying anything else. He chose not to.

“I’m speaking to a god?” I asked. My confidence wavered. Artemis nodded, almost proudly.

Then he sighed, “Vel, do you remember your mother? Or even your stepfather?” he added sourly.

Suddenly, my anger started to rise, “Vel? We don’t even know each other and you are calling me Vel? Alright then, how about I call you Arty. Is that Okay?” Artemis looked like he had been punched in the stomach. I started to feel extremely guilty.

“I’m sorry; I didn’t mean to get so angry. It’s just, well, I have no clue who I am, I’m talking to a god and I feel like I have no life. Well, I do have a life, but, like…” I was having a conversation with myself. How interesting. I looked up at Artemis. The surprised look on his face made me want to laugh out loud. He snapped out of his thoughts and smiled warmly.

“I’m sorry, you sounded just like your mother,” he said. Great. Now he was talking like he was best friends with my mother. He must have noticed how frustrated I looked because he looked at me and said, “I don’t think I have introduced myself in the best way. I am Artemis Axy, your father. Your real father.
