It's Kind of a Coincidence

Bella had a kidney transplant when she was sixteen years old. Two years later, she is able to meet her donor, even if she doesn't really want to. Her donor is Tregory Jones. What Bella wasn't counting on was for him to be a beautiful, just out of his teens, boy with the personality of a god.

26. The breakdown.

I walk downstairs in the middle of the night while Trey sleeps to get a snack. I've barely eaten anything for ages because of the pain, but it's not too bad right now so I figure I might as well make the most of it. Dave stands in our kitchen making a sandwich.

"You had the same idea as me, hey?" he smiles at me as I walk in.

I giggle. "Yep."

"Here, have this one." he passes me that sandwich and starts making another one.

"Thank you." I smile. "I'm sorry."

He frowns as we sit down at the table. I take a minute to let it sink in. He looks so kind and tired and worn down and I feel even guiltier than ever. He is losing his son because his son fell in love. He doesn't deserve any of this. He's just sort of been thrown into the middle of this.

"What for, sweetheart?" he asks.

"Taking Trey away." I sigh. "You're losing him because of me and I spent loads of time with him that he could have been spending with you-"

"Hey!" he hushes me. "It was always up to him how he spent his time and I just wanted him to be happy. He has never been happier than when he's been with you. And as for the other subject? Don't blame yourself for his decision. You're not making him do this, darling, and the last thing he'd wish for is for you to feel guilty."

I nod, sighing. "Thank you, Dave."

"Tell me it's not true." is the first thing Trey and I wake up to in the morning.

Dan stands there, fuming. He is bright red and his eyes are bloodshot and he's stood all tense.

"Dan-" Trey begins, sitting up.

"Tell me you are not dying." Dan says through gritted teeth. "Promise me."

"I can't promise that."

I then think I witness the most heartbreaking thing of my life. It's like slow motion as I see all the anger leave Dan's body along with all the tension. He slumps against the wall, emotionless while he lets it sink in and then he just breaks. His entire face crumples and he starts to sob, silently. I want to rush forward and hug him or something, but this is my fault. I'm why he has to lose his best friend. I always want to put something forward, but I can't here. I have to just sit back and watch.

Trey steps forward, pulling Dan to his feet and they both hold each other so tight as if they're keeping each other together.

"I'm sorry." I mouth to Dan as he catches my eye over Trey's shoulder.

He just shakes his head as if to say "it's not your fault" which everybody is saying, but it is my fault. I am the one who started all of this and I can't seem to apologise enough.
