32. Side Effects - Part 1.

Katie's P.O.V

I awoke in my own bed, the happy memories from last night dancing in my head. I smiled as I remembered how proud Saul looked when I showed him my scores on my exams, pleased with the fact that he approved. My good scores also scored me a free desert!

Have I ever mentioned how awesome Saul is?!

I removed myself from my bed before walking downstairs. I noticed Niall must not have been awake when I walked into an empty kitchen. A smile spread across my face as an idea suddenly struck me.

I began to work swiftly, determined to have pancakes made before Niall came down. My plan ended with success as I placed two separate plates on the counter top.

Ok, I burnt the first two... But who needs them?!

I smiled at my accomplishment, clearly happy with the food I had just prepared. My ears perked up to the sound of someone quickly moving down the stairs, Niall's voice soon being heard as well.

"Katie, are you in the kitchen?" He asked.

I stayed silent, letting him find out for himself as he made his way through the entrance.

"Ta-da!" I exclaimed, gesturing towards the pancakes.

"Are you ok?!" He asked, immediately checking me over.

"Niall, I'm fine." I said, pulling my arm out of his possession, a bit upset that he wasn't excited with what I had done. Instead, he was worried I had hurt myself in the process of making a couple of pancakes.

Come on!!

"Why didn't you wait until I woke up?"

"Why don't you believe in me anymore?" I asked, answering his question with one of my own. "Honestly, all I did was make freaking pancakes. It's not like I went all Iron Chef in here! Why can't you except the fact I'm not a child anymore?!"

He stood there, staring at me while my words sank into his skin. I loved him and didn't like arguing with my brother, but he has to realize I can do simple things like this on my own.

"Look, you're my little sister. Whether you like it or not, I'm always going to worry about you. I know it gets on your nerves every now and then, but you have to realize I'm only overly protective because I love you." He pulled me into a hug before continuing. "And thank you for breakfast, it looks amazing."

"Thank you." I sighed out, returning the hug.

We then sat together while we both ate breakfast, Niall over complimenting me. It was nice just eating breakfast with Niall again, the hospital never once making me feel right at home. I was where I belonged.

I sat my empty plate in the sink and headed back towards my room. I was then stopped by Niall calling my name.

"Katie." He said, causing me to spin back around in his direction.

"Yeah?" I questioned.

"Come back over here, you need to take your medicine."

I groaned slightly as I made my way back over to him. I was handed a glass of water and a couple of pills, quickly swallowing them before trying once more to retreat to my room.

"Slow down." He chuckled, grabbing my upper arm.

"What now?" I whined, wishing to go change into something other than my pajamas.

"I still have to change your bandages." He replied, amused at my slightly grumpy state. He sat me down on a stool and lifted one of my arms.

I instantly pulled my arm away, now too ashamed to let my brother see what was under the wrapped skin.

"Katie." He chuckled, thinking I was playing some sort of game. "Very funny, now let me see one of your arms."

"I think I can do this by myself." I stated, trying to climb down from the stool, only to have Niall stop me.

"Why won't you let me do it?" He interrogated.

"I don't want you to see." I said quietly, looking at my feet.

"Hey." He said, lifting my head up. "I'm not going to judge you. You know that."

I nodded my head slowly before allowing him to unwrap the bandage on my arm. I could easily notice his expression change as he examined the damaged skin. He then began to wrap the new fabric around my wounds, repeating the process on the other arm. He never once said a word.

"Niall." I said, breaking the unwanted silence. He looked at me before I continued. "I love you."

"I love you too." He smiled, collecting the trash from the counter before disposing of it into the garbage bin. "You can go now." He chuckled.

I immediately hopped off the stool, kissing Niall on the cheek before making my way up the stairs. I decided today was a sweatpants and hoodie kind of day. After that, I made my way back downstairs.

"What do you wanna do today?" I asked, plopping myself next to Niall on the couch.

"Well, I'm actually supposed to be meeting my producer in a couple of hours." He replied.

"Oh."

"I can ask to bring you along. It shouldn't be a big deal or anything." He said, already pulling his phone out of his pocket.

"No, it's fine. I think I'd rather lounge around the house today." I stated, not wanting to be a third wheel.

"Are you sure? I don't want to leave you here alone."

"Then ask the guys to come over. They can keep an eye on me if you're that worried." I smiled.

"I'm still not sure I want them around you.." He frowned.

"Niall." I sighed. "Trust me. Things are better now. I promise to call if anything happens. No more lies and secrets."

"Pinky promise?" He grinned.

"Pinky promise." I giggled, wrapping my smallest finger around his.

"Alright. Let me get a hold of the guys, and I'll let you know the game plan."

"Sounds good." I said, grabbing the remote and beginning to flip through the channels on the telly.

"Are you sure you don't want to tag along?"

"I'm fine, Niall. Go discuss your future and such." I giggled, hugging him in the doorway.

"Fine." He laughed. "I'll be back late, so don't wait up, ok? I want you to get some rest."

"Yeah, because three days at the hospital wasn't enough."

"You hardly slept then!" He pointed out.

"Ok mum, I'll go to bed at a decent hour." I grinned.

"Good. Don't forget to take your medicine, and let one of the boys help you with your bandages, and try not to-"

"Niall, you're going to be gone for a day, not three months. I'll be fine."

"I know." He sighed out, giving me one last hug. "I love you."

"I love you too." I said, watching him retreat to his car. Once his vehicle was out of sight, I made my way back inside the house.

I walked into the dining room to find the guys chatting away with one another. They all stopped as they noticed me, making me feel uncomfortable with them all staring at me. The silent stares reminded me of all the times I would walk into a room before they did their daily deed.

"So, how's it feel to be back?" Louis asked, trying his hardest not to make his smile too awkward.

"Good." I said quietly. "Um, look. I want to apologize about what I said to you and Zayn at the hospital. I wasn't thinking straight and I feel awful about-"

"Don't worry about it." Louis smiled, Zayn nodding in agreement.

I felt relieved knowing I wasn't anyone's punching bag anymore, assuming we were all on good enough terms now.

"Want to play some video games?" Liam quizzed.

"She cheats." Harry jokingly stated.

"Really?" Louis asked, now looking at Harry.

"Yes."

"No." I cut in. "Harry just can't admit that a girl beat him."

"Only because you cheated!" He argued, rising from the stool he once occupied.

"Harry, there's a difference between cheating and dominating. Get over it."

The kitchen filled with 'ohs' as the other boys smirked at Harry, waiting to hear his comeback.

"Whatever." He huffed.

I smiled as I had won this round, knowing there would be more of these foolish arguments in the future, Harry being just as stubborn as I am.

"Anyway, back to the main question. Are you up for video games?" Liam asked again.

"It sounds like a lot of fun, but I'm suddenly a bit tired. Is it cool if I just go nap for a while?"

"Sure." Liam said, shrugging his shoulders. "We'll try to keep quiet down here." He assured me.

"Thanks." I smiled.

I walked up to my room before lying down on my bed, instantly going out like a light. I felt as if I had only gotten five minutes of peace before someone began to continuously nudge my shoulder.

"Hm?" I grumbled, slowly opening my eyes.

"Rise and shine sleeping beauty." Liam chuckled.

"How long was I out?" I asked, still feeling the time went by too quickly.

"Too long in my opinion." He laughed again, leaning down and kissing my lips.

"Liam!" I exclaimed, instantly waking up.

"What?" He asked, looking clearly confused.

"Why did you do that?"

"Am I not allowed to kiss my girlfriend?" He smirked, treating the situation like a game.

"Your- wait, what?" I asked, unable to form a complete sentence.
