Battle Scars

Heather has a past that has damaged her for life. She shuts everyone out and trusts no one. Then she meets Liam.

12. The truth

" OK, this won't be easy but here goes. When I was about three years old, one night I was asleep when I was woken by the sound of gunshots. When I went outside there were a load of soldiers running around shooting people. I was only three so I had no clue what was going on. I tried to find my parents but there were so many people that I didn't know where they were. Eventually, I was picked up and put into a car with a bunch of other kids and we were driven away. We got taken to an orphanage and were told that our parents had been killed. I think that was about the time my whole world fell apart. I got put into a foster home and I made friends with this girl called Eleanor. Then some people adopted her and I never saw her again. After that, I just shut everyone out. It was easier that way, less painful. It's been this way since I was 13. Just shutting people out. But then I met you and I realized I was falling for you and that scared me because I can't let you in. I just can't and I'm sorry."

By now Liam was on the brink of tears again, processing everything he'd just heard. "You were falling for me?" he questioned.

"Yes, I was and I still am and that's what hurts because we can't be together,"

"Why not?"

"Because I don't want to go through that pain again, when you leave me,"

"But I'm not going to leave you, I swear. I would never do that to you. I promise, hand on heart, that I will never leave you."

I couldn't believe what I was hearing. He'd just sworn he would never leave me. Could I believe him. Screw this, I was done with hesistating. I knew I could trust him.

"You promise never to leave me, then I trust you. I really like you Liam, I don't want to lose you. So can we give us a go?"

Liam said nothing. Instead he took my face in his hands and kissed me. When we broke apart, we were both smiling with happiness. I had finally faced my biggest fear and let Liam in and I couldn't have been happier.

Just as we were about to go downstairs, Liam asked me a strange question."Your friend you mentioned, Eleanor, what was her last name?"

I racked my brain trying to remember. "Pretty sure it was Calder," I replied.

A huge smile spread across his face. "Come on let's go downstairs," he said taking my hand.
