War Heart

"Now wait a second," Alex grumbles still half asleep. Dylan stops speaking so Alex can continue.
"I missed the first part. So there are all these girls and they are trying to do what exactly?" He questions. I sigh, it pays to pay attention.
"There are only 4 girls, Nala the red headed bandit, Kara the fighter, black hair comes from Kilren where there are orange dyes, Ali the sword expert who was Dylan's best friend and Bella the leader with the unique ability to order people things and they have to do it. The four of them are trying to defeat Riley and his mutants because he somehow built a mind control system," I sum up for him. He takes in the information and slowly nods.
"So the red head, the fighter, the sword expert and the leader are going up against a vampire with a wicked talent to cause trouble," Alex shortens my summary. I frown at him.

18. Chapter 13 (Nala)

Tears involuntarily spill from my eyes although I am determined not to cry at my death. I hang my head, I truly do feel sorry about everything I told Bella. I was simply angry about being in a cramped room and I took it out on Bella.
"Suit yourself, but the black haired on is next," Riley announces and as soon as the words are out of his mouth the sword presses into my neck. This is it. I only wish I could have told everyone what I truly think of them. A single tear makes its way down my cheek. I raise my head and open my eyes right as the sword should slice through my neck. A flurry of action catches my eye and I look in time to see Bella pull out a dagger and throw it at Riley. She misses, drastically but it hits the mutant that holds my sword. Bella's words ring through my head and suddenly they make sense. 'They'll kick you in the back if you're not careful'. I lift my leg and strike the mutant to my left. It crumples to the ground and so do I. Gratitude and relief flow through my veins. I hear Bella take on the rest of them with her voice and she gets to her knees before me. She lifts my chin and I stare into her icy blue eyes through tears.
"You keep saving my life," I whisper to her and she closes her eyes. I realize that what she drank is getting to her. She lowers her head but manages to open her eyes.
"Help me get out of here without making a fool of myself and we'll call it even," she bargains and I nod. She gets to her feet and walks over to Riley who is frozen in place, unable to move. She snatches the 2 sets of keys on his pants and tosses a set to me. I start unlocking the Kara's glass room and out of the corner of my eye I see Bella struggling to get the key in the hole. Her hands are shaking as she attempts to unlock Ali's door. In seconds I have Kara's door unlocked and I move over to Bella.
"I think that mutant is getting up over there where your dagger is," I tell her trying not to hurt her pride while telling her not to make a fool of herself. A flash of anger speeds through her eyes but she nods slightly leaving me to the door. I unlock the door with ease and turn to see Bella with a dagger against her throat.
"You move and I'll kill her," Riley threatens and I freeze. A smirk crosses Bella's face and my eyes widen in horror. Her foot moves which brings my attention to her dagger on the ground. She slams her foot on the dagger and it flips through the air landing in the palm of her hand. In a flash she's using all the force in her body to stab Riley in the stomach. He backs up and Bella ducks under the blade as it swipes through the air violently. She spins around and pulls the dagger out. Riley gasps and yet manages to smile. I raise an eyebrow at Kara and she blinks slowly in response. We both grab our swords and point them at Riley before he can move. Bella backs up so she's behind us and I hear Ali gather useful things that are on the shelves.
"You are going to let us leave and give us a days head start before you have thoughts on coming after us," Bella orders and Riley lowers his head in response. I lower my sword and grab my bow and arrows. Slowly we make our way out of the castle and the further we get the happier I become. According to the map I stole we're very close to the mountain. Once we cross the mountain pass we'll be in Snake Mutant territory. There will be no more towns, no more people, and no more safe places. The only occupied building there will be is the building where the scepter is. After that we'll cross into Wolf Mutant territory to get the radent, then on to Elephant Mutant territory for the glaker. Finally we'll cross into unknown territory to find the last piece of the override system, the strack. Apparently the control system is also there but I'm still not sure how to stop the thing. As we leave the town I can't shake the feeling that the mutants were watching us leave. Their beady black eyes staring us down, waiting for us to give in. I shiver and banish the thoughts from my mind. We find our horses tied exactly where we left them last night. My stomach grumbles as I walk over to Red Willow. I am honestly surprised that no one ransacked our saddle bags. Soon we're mounted and galloping off into the night. It seems I'm not the only one eager to get away from the town. Bella holds on to her horse's mane tightly, looking a little jarred. We press forward at fast rate until we're within a castles worth of space from the mountain.
"We're going to stop for the night. We'll tackle the mountain pass in the morning," Bella announces and I agree. There's no use in trying to pass tonight while we're all exhausted. I dismount and leave Red Willow to the grass. I trust that he'll stay put. Kara offers to keep first watch and I'm thankful. I sink to the ground and fall asleep almost immediately.
