War Heart

"Now wait a second," Alex grumbles still half asleep. Dylan stops speaking so Alex can continue.
"I missed the first part. So there are all these girls and they are trying to do what exactly?" He questions. I sigh, it pays to pay attention.
"There are only 4 girls, Nala the red headed bandit, Kara the fighter, black hair comes from Kilren where there are orange dyes, Ali the sword expert who was Dylan's best friend and Bella the leader with the unique ability to order people things and they have to do it. The four of them are trying to defeat Riley and his mutants because he somehow built a mind control system," I sum up for him. He takes in the information and slowly nods.
"So the red head, the fighter, the sword expert and the leader are going up against a vampire with a wicked talent to cause trouble," Alex shortens my summary. I frown at him.

17. Chapter 12 (Kara)

I take a seat next to Nala beside the fire she built. Staring into the flames I watch as they grow and prosper among the wood. My eyes droop and I find out how tired I actually am. Leaves rustling to my left makes me bring my head up. I see Bella walking out from the woods. Her expression is unreadable as it is most times. I stand and walk toward her meeting her half way. Her blue eyes glitter angrily. I'll have to be careful.
"I still don't understand why I had to do that. With the talents he's got he could be useful," she growls under her breath and I take a deep breath to steady myself. She's scary. She may be the only person I'm truly afraid of. But boy does that ever make her a great person to have on your team.
"His talents were making me nervous. It's unlike anything I've ever seen, to see someone with the gift of people speaking have their will bent," I tell her calmly as we get closer to camp. She glares at me before breaking away to tend to her horse and I am reminded once again that although I managed to get her to listen to me once she's still in charge. I sit down next to Nala again and watch as Bella sharpens her daggers. Each strike rings through my ears and I could have sworn she's purposely prolonging each strike so the sound reminds me of what I did. I move over and lie down with my back to Bella and the others. As I begin to fall asleep to the sound of metal scraping metal I begin to question my actions.
"Get up," a voice prods my mind and I yawn sleepily in response. The tip of something sharp digs into my arm and immediately I'm on my feet, wide awake. Soldiers of the King of Rayn's army surround us wearing the natural blue dyes of their country.
"We have been ordered under the command of the under-lord Riley to bring you in. Thesssssse are hissss wishesssss," the soldiers speak as one mass. All their mouths move at once and I notice some of them have fangs. I turn to see that the others are up. Ali stands with her sword out and I can already see her light gray eyes analyzing the scene. Bella is up and her good arm is poised with a dagger in her hand. Nala, with determination written all over her face, arms her bow in a flash.
"There'sssss no need to pitch a fight. Thissssss can be painlesssssss," the voice responds to our actions. A shiver runs down my back and I glance at Bella and wait for her command to fight. She sighs as she looks at the odds. I bounce on the balls of my feet waiting. I love practice. My oldest brother once told me 'never let the odds keep you from doing what you know you were meant to do'. As I look at the number of soldiers I suddenly understand why Bella is so hesitant. There are about 8 soldiers for every one of us. Okay, so the odds aren't looking so great but hey, it's a challenge. I've never known Bella to turn down a challenge.
"The risks are too much," she mutters under her breath. My jaw drops, how much brainwashing did the bright blond haired man do? This is not the Bella I know.
"But," I begin to protest but she cuts me off.
"Someone once said that sometimes surrender means giving up trying to understand and becoming comfortable with not knowing. I honestly have no clue why they were sent here but the odds are bad. If it were just me I'd do it but it's not and our fight isn't with them anyway," she explains before I get a chance to protest again. She puts her dagger back in its place and lets the head soldier roughly grab her arms. My jaw drops, I've never seen Bella like this. Granted, I haven't known her long but still. She seems upset. A soldier yanks my arm from my side and that's when I notice it. These aren't soldiers. These are snake mutants. As we get drug into town people begin to stare. As we pass a group of men the light glitters at an off angle catching the mens' eyes. They're all black. I start to panic because I suddenly understand why Bella didn't want to come into town. This isn't a town full of people it's a town full of snake mutants. Shivers run down my back as we pass under an arch. We  get closer and closer to a palace and the closer we get the worse I feel. I can feel panic and fear radiating off everyone. Everyone except Bella, who looks as confident as ever. We get to the gate where I see Riley, waiting for us.
"Send them to the dungeons," he orders quietly as we pass. His voice sends chills through me and I take a deep breath hoping he won't notice.
"Yessssss massssster," the soldiers speak as one freaking me out once more. As we walk down staircase after staircase I begin to get tense. Something feels different, wrong. Once we get to the dungeon we're each thrown into a different room. All are connected by a wall that is glass, something very uncommon. There are holes in the glass so I can still hear everything around me.
"Hey, hey, hey hey! Be careful with that!" Nala screeches from her room to the left of mine as the mutant soldiers take away her bow and sheath of arrows. They hang the bow and sheath on a hook outside her room. They take Ali and Bella's swords also and do the same thing. A mutant comes in my room and before I get a chance to say anything it grabs my sword handle and pulls my sword out. It leaves immediately and sets my sword on a shelf outside my room. Riley comes into the dungeon next and his expression shows with amusement.
"What could I possibly do with the four of you? Hmmm?" He asks no one in particular. I hear Bella cross her arms and sit down against the back wall. Riley walks down the aisle and stops when he gets to the first room.
"Hmmm, a bandit who got kicked out," he tells Nala and she slams herself against the glass at him as he passes by.
"A girl who was betrayed by her family," I cringe as he spills the secret I'd been trying to forget. He moves on though, thankfully.
"A young maiden who refused to marry," he says and I raise an eyebrow. That doesn't sound like Ali. At the last room he sighs but doesn't say anything about Bella. Odd. He opens her door and steps inside. I wait to see if Bella will attack him or not, I mean she still has all her daggers. But she doesn't and instead looks up at Riley with disinterested look on her face.
"I'm going to need those daggers of yours. I believe there are nine of them. At least, last time I counted," he speaks loud enough for all of us to hear. In my head I will Bella to stand and fight him. But she only remains seated on the ground, unmoving.
"I will cut off my own head before I hand over my daggers to you," she tells him, her voice sounding uninterested. Riley seems taken aback by her comment and he takes a step back.
"Well now, we can't have that can we?" Riley overcomes his shock with a sarcastic comment. Bella shrugs her shoulders as if either decision would suit her. Her uncaring appearance not only disturbs me but it also angers me.
"Hand them over Bella," he orders with such a force that I almost believe he has Bella's gift. I place my hands on the glass trying to hear the situation better. I watch as Bella struggles under his tone. Her hand moves to her waist as if in a trance. Riley takes a step toward her and the trance is broken.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you," she says with the same detached tone but this time I catch the warning in her voice. Riley seems to catch it too as he takes in her unconcerned demeanor. He sighs loudly.
"Very well then, I'll come back when you're ready to behave yourself," he replies as he leaves the room. As he heads up the steps I realize why he said that. He said that because that was the only thing he could say that would hide the fact that Bella was truly in charge.
"What was that for!" Nala shrieks at Bella as she slams her fist against the wall that her and I share. Bella only raises an eyebrow at her and I catch a slight flash of amusement cross her eyes.
"You could have just ordered him out of the way and we'd be out of here by now!" She yells angrily smashing her fist against the glass on the word now. This gets Bella mad.
"I could of-" she breaks off breathy, "I could have just....is that what you think I do for fun? Order people to do this and order people to do that? No! Is that the only reason you trust me? Because my talent forces you to?" My eyes widen as Bella stands.
"No! I don't trust you at all! I'm just saying we wouldn't be in this mess if you'd just used your talent on Riley! You make a great leader, you really do, you're fearless and brave but you're too proud. You're too proud to let go of trying to save all of us and do what you're supposed to do!" She shouts throwing herself against the glass. Bella looks absolutely shocked and she slumps against the glass. She sits silently as three guards come down the steps with what smells like liquor and cards. They sit and entertain themselves with the cards as the day passes. Nala continually throws herself against the glass until finally she settles, pacing around her room. I slip in and out of a light sleep and my stomach growls occasionally. I haven't eaten since the other night.
"Guard," Bella calls to one of the mutants, waking me from my sleep. It comes over and opens the door to hear what she wants. It carries a bottle of whatever they were drinking. They had poured it into cups but Bella ordered it over while it was refilling the glasses. It comes closer to her and she snatches the bottle from its slimy fingers.
"Leave," she growls at it threateningly and it scampers out of the room with a squeal. I can't blame it, she's ruthless. I cringe as she glares at Ali. She scares me. I watch as she tips the bottle up drinking the contents.
"Bella," Ali warns as she stands in attempt to tower over Bella.
"Leave me alone," she grumbles turning away from Ali and taking another swallow from the bottle.
"Where did the fearless, smart, daring leader go," Nala lectures her through the glass. She places her hands on the glass but doesn't attempt to hit it.
"Sorry to disappoint you," Bella mutters darkly as she takes another drink. I shake my head at her.
"I think you've had enough, give it back to the guards," Nala orders but Bella only glares at her.
"I don't take orders from you," she growls at her and Nala smashes her hands agains the glass making me flinch. She scowls but knowing she lost the fight she doesn't say anything more. The three of us sit and watch as Bella continues to drink as the day turns to night.
I must've fallen asleep because I jolt awake to the sound of footsteps echoing down the staircase. I glance at Bella to find her looking cockily at the steps while continuing to drink from the bottle. Riley steps out into the little light that is left in the dungeon. He smiles evilly as he catches a glimpse of Bella in her drunken state. He opens her room and steps inside leaving the door wide open as if he thinks Bella won't try to escape.
"I think you've had enough of that," he tells her with a smirk on his lips. She holds his stare defiantly and I fear for a second she won't listen to him.
"That's okay it was empty anyway," she says cockily letting the bottle roll across the concrete floor. He frowns at her but eventually sighs and turns away.
"I've come to propose a deal," he announces to the four of us but yet I feel it's only meant for Bella.
"I don't want to hear it and could you just do us all a favor and shut up," she rudely interrupts. Riley takes it well though and he doesn't show any emotion other than amusement. Nala begins to pace along the wall we share.
"But you haven't even heard the deal yet. Here it is; Choice one, I'll spare your friends-"
"They're 'not' my friends," she interrupts him again.
"Sorry, your acquaintances. I'll spare your acquaintances if you agree to join me," he corrects himself and the look on Bella's face is hysterical. It's a cross between disbelief and amusement.
"And the second choice?" She questions with a bored tone. I stand because I'm so tense. Fear fills me, the fear of being stuck in this room.
"The second choice is I start killing off your friends- sorry, acquaintances in savage ways starting with the red head until you agree to join me," he states quickly. My heart stops and Nala stops pacing immediately. Bella, however, simply rolls her eyes at him, an unconcerned look in her eyes as if she thinks he won't do it. Riley takes in her uncaring expression and snaps his fingers. The mutants that were before playing cards snap to attention and enter Nala's room. She shrieks as two of them grab each of her arms.
"You'd better put me down right now or I'll...I'll-"
"You'll what? Because last time I checked you weren't in a position to bargain," he comments to her as the two mutants carry her by her arms to where he's standing. Nala's face is so full of fury and hate that's directed at Bella that I can't understand why she doesn't do something about the situation. Riley raises his eyebrows at Bella as if asking if she believes him. She lets of a sigh of boredom and yawns. Nala's expression hardens and she throws Bella a glare. Riley growls in frustration and nods ever so slightly. A third mutant comes over and pulls Nala's sword out of its handle. It presses the blade to her throat but doesn't slice through. Nala's eyes show with panic. They are filled with the unknown of death and the veritable sincerity of shock. Riley turns to Bella and again raises his eyebrows at her.
"You're bluffing," she concludes disinterestedly. Her demeanor is really starting to bug me. I mean she has to care slightly about Nala. Riley frowns and with a flick of his hand the sword is pressed further into Nala's neck creating a tiny cut. Blood drips from the wound creating a small river down Nala's neck. She panics and her wild green eyes plead with Bella to save her. I almost close my eyes, I can't watch this. The only thing stopping me from closing them is the fact that I'm curious. Curious about what Bella will do. Nala's breath quickens and her eyes open and close more dramatically. I can almost hear her heart racing
"Go ahead kill her, it's not like she's of any use to me. I mean what's the point of having someone you'll have to trust with your life if they don't trust you back? I don't know, what do you think Riley? Maybe I'm just a drunk, proud, idiot trying to lead a group of untrustworthy misfits. After all, bandits are so untrustworthy, they'll 'kick you in the back' if you aren't careful," she directs her accusation at Nala while looking at Riley. Confused as to why she accented the words kick you in the back, I watch as she pulls out one of her daggers and stares at the metallic gleam. Riley looks absolutely speechless. Tears stream down Nala's cheeks as the sword digs in further covering her neck in a red blanket. Her pain reflects in her eyes and the tears that fill her eyes are tears of pain and apology.
"I'm sorry Bella! I'm sorry, I said you weren't a good leader, you are, there's no one else I'd rather have. You took me in when I was rejected and I know I can never repay you for that. I also didn't mean what I said about your talent. Bella I'm sorry, you are drunk and proud but not an idiot by any means. I'm sorry," she pleads her life to Bella I'm not sure if I'm imagining it but I swear there is the beginnings of a smile on Bella's lips. I feel sickened, Bella is enjoying Nala's torment.
"Last chance Bella. Join me or the red head dies," he offers quietly and I beg her in my mind to save Nala. She takes in Nala's wet eyes and red neck before turning her head away. Nala's face falls as she realizes she's going to die.
"Like I said, bandits, they'll kick you in the back if you're not careful," she acknowledges the fact that Nala will die as she looks away from the scene. Panic fills my veins and I pound my fists against the glass.
"Suit yourself, but the black haired one is next," Riley smiles viciously.
